Pete Carroll Discusses Josh Gordon
There’s natural excitement for Josh Gordon‘s debut with the Seahawks, but Pete Carroll cautioned that the organization isn’t setting any expectations for the talented wideout.
Seahawks Considered Signing Antonio Brown
The Seahawks surprised some folks when they claimed wide receiver Josh Gordon off waivers from the Patriots several days ago, and per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, Seattle considered another talented former Patriot who has made plenty of headlines.
Schefter says the Seahawks did their due diligence on free agent Antonio Brown before making the decision to claim Gordon. He adds that QB Russell Wilson was actually lobbying the team to pull the trigger on Brown.
However, Seattle may have been wary of signing Brown because the league’s investigation into the sexual assault/rape allegations that he is facing is not complete. It seems that the only thing left to do in that regard is to interview Brown himself, but there is no indication as to when that interview will take place. If Brown were to sign with a club, the NFL would reportedly place him on the commissioner’s exempt list until its investigation is over, which means the acquiring team would be paying Brown to not play.
Brown has reportedly drawn interest from several clubs since his unceremonious ouster from New England, but the Seahawks are the first team to be definitively connected to AB. Schefter suggests that Seattle could circle back to Brown whenever the league’s investigation is over.
Meanwhile, Gordon will not be on the field for the Seahawks’ matchup against the Buccaneers today, but he is expected to make his Seattle debut against the division-rival 49ers next week.

Seahawks Claim Josh Gordon
The Seahawks have claimed Josh Gordon off waivers from the Patriots. With that, they’ve added one of the game’s most lethal wide receivers for the home stretch of the 2019 season.
Things have never been simple or straightforward for the simultaneously kind-hearted, troubled, and immensely talented Gordon. This year was no exception.
Gordon had his highs, including six catches for 83 yards in a September blowout of the Jets. Then, unfortunately, came the lows. Late last month, the Patriots placed Gordon on injured reserve due to left knee and ankle trouble. The Pats felt that Gordon would not be able to play again this season. Gordon, meanwhile, says he’ll be ready to play sometime next week or the week after. The disagreement led to divorce, but the Patriots refused to let him go until after Tuesday’s trade deadline, when he would be subject to waivers and, in theory, kept away from contenders.
So much for that. The Seahawks, with a 6-2 record and No. 28 priority in the NFL’s waiver queue, landed Gordon, must to the surprise and delight of head coach Pete Carroll. Quarterback Russell Wilson is elated too – he suddenly has another playmaker to help stretch the field and give fits to opposing defenses.
Gordon, 28, tallied 20 catches for 287 yards and one touchdown in six games this year. At times, he flashed (get it?) the ability that propelled him to an absurd 87/1,646/9 stat line in 2013, a campaign that resulted in Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro nods.
Seahawks Place Tedric Thompson On IR
The Seahawks have placed safety Tedric Thompson on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, the club announced today. Veteran linebacker/defensive end Dekoda Watson has been signed to take Thompson’s spot on Seattle’s roster. Additionally, the Seahawks have designated tight end Ed Dickson to return from IR.
Thompson, a fourth-round pick in 2017, became a full-time starter last season and had started all six games for Seattle this year. While he’d posted two interceptions, Thompson had graded as a bottom-five safety league-wide, per Pro Football Focus. With trade acquisition Quandre Diggs dealing with a hamstring injury, rookie safety Marquise Blair is likely to start his third consecutive contest opposite Bradley McDougald, per Brady Henderson of ESPN.com.
Dickson, meanwhile, was originally slated to miss four-to-five weeks after undergoing knee surgery in early August, but he’s clearly well past that timeline. While he has returned to practice, Dickson is not expected to play in Week 9, as Pete Carroll indicated earlier this week. With fellow tight end Will Dissly already on injured reserve, Dickson could be in for immediate action as soon as he’s able to get back on the field.

Deadline Fallout: Penny, Rams, Adams
Since using a first-round pick on Rashaad Penny last year, the Seahawks have not given him a lead backfield role. They preferred Chris Carson and Mike Davis leading the ball-carrying group last season and have Carson entrenched atop the depth chart this year. As such, the Lions expressed interest in Penny prior to Tuesday afternoon’s trade deadline, John Clayton of ESPN 710 AM Seattle notes. Seattle sought a second-round pick for Penny, though it doesn’t sound like the team was shopping the second-year back. Penny can be under Seahawks control through 2022. The Lions have run into trouble in their backfield, losing starter Kerryon Johnson. They were interested in Kenyan Drake, but the Cardinals ended up making a deal with the Dolphins. Ty Johnson, Tra Carson and ex-Seahawk J.D. McKissic represent the Lions’ primary running back options for the stretch run.
Here is the latest deadline fallout:
- The Dolphins will send the Rams a 2022 seventh-round pick for Aqib Talib, per Tom Pelissero of NFL.com. With Talib on IR until at least Week 15, the rebuilding team is likely only interested in the fifth-round 2020 choice it acquired. The 33-year-old cornerback looks headed toward free agency for the first time since 2014.
- As for the Rams, they want to use some of the savings from this move to re-sign emerging linebacker Cory Littleton, Vincent Bonsignore of The Athletic notes (subscription required). Littleton is one of a few key Rams on expiring contracts, joining Michael Brockers and Dante Fowler in that group. Playing on a second-round RFA tender, Littleton has operated as Los Angeles’ top linebacker this year and would stand to attract considerable interest as a 2020 UFA. With a high-end Jalen Ramsey re-up coming, the Rams will be tight on cap space, however, and may have to bid farewell to a few role players — like they did this offseason.
- Chris Harris has stuck to his guns about testing free agency this time around. He signed a five-year, $42.5MM extension with the Broncos in late 2014, and that deal became one of the most team-friendly pacts in the league in the latter part of the 2010s. The 30-year-old cornerback does not plan to sign a Broncos extension before reaching the market, Troy Renck of Denver7 notes. However, Harris has said he wants to finish his career in Denver. He and the Broncos were not close on terms this offseason, but Renck added a that third Broncos contract could be in play for the four-time Pro Bowler.
- The Day 3 pick the Cowboys offered the Jets, in addition to the first-round pick included in the proposal, for Jamal Adams was either a fourth- or fifth-rounder, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News tweets. The Jets wanted a first and a pair of seconds for the Pro Bowl safety, one GM Joe Douglas still calls firmly part of the team’s long-term plan, per ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini.
