DeSean Jackson Declines To Comment On Reported Trade Request

We learned earlier this morning that Buccaneers wide receiver DeSean Jackson has requested a trade, though the team wants to keep him. Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times tweets that Jackson, on his way to the team bus this morning, declined to comment on the report.

DeSean Jackson Requests Trade

Buccaneers wide receiver DeSean Jackson recently requested that the team trade him, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. However, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times tweets that Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter is unaware of the request, and if Jackson did ask for a trade, it would be surprising if Koetter did not know about it.

In any event, Rapoport says that the 3-3 Bucs have refused to grant that request, and it appears as if the team will hold on to Jackson through Tuesday’s trade deadline. After all, Koetter’s job security is tenuous at best, and GM Jason Licht is probably not much safer. As such, team brass may have personal reasons, as well as on-field reasons, to keep Jackson around.

Jackson signed a three-year deal, $33.5MM deal with the Bucs in March 2017, but he and quarterback Jameis Winston never got on the same page during Jackson’s first year with the club, and Jackson’s deep ball skills were sorely underutilized. He caught 50 balls for 668 yards and three scores last season, and his 13.4 yards per catch average was the lowest mark of his career.

This year, he and backup signal-caller Ryan Fitzpatrick were making magic together through the first two games of the season, but since Winston has resumed quarterbacking duties, Jackson has once again seen his numbers take a dip. In each of the last two games, Winston has missed an open Jackson for what would have likely been a long touchdown pass.

Although the Bucs have declined to honor Jackson’s request to date, this report will surely increase interest in the 31-year-old playmaker (who turns 32 on December 1). Any acquiring team would take on the remainder of his $11MM salary for this season and would be on the hook for his $10MM salary in 2019, but he could be released after the 2018 campaign without any dead money being left on the cap.

NFL Workout Updates: 10/26/18

Here are today’s reported tryouts:

Denver Broncos

  • P Brock Miller

New Orleans Saints

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Saints have had some injuries on the defensive line recently, so it makes sense why they’d bring in this group. With this large of an amount of players brought in, they will likely be signing someone soon. The Buccaneers are clearly evaluating their kicking options after Chandler Catanzaro has struggled to start the year. He made a game-winning 59-yard field goal in overtime last week, but missed an extra point and a 40-yarder at the end of regulation before that. Both Ficken and Santos have kicked for the Rams this season.

Buccaneers To Sign LB Kevin Minter

Well, that didn’t take long. Moments after completing his Tuesday afternoon workout, the Buccaneers signed linebacker Kevin Minter, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic (on Twitter). Details of the deal are not yet known, but it’s likely a one-year deal for something at or near the prorated portion of the veteran’s minimum.

The Bucs had to make a move after losing two linebackers to ACL tears on Sunday. Minter now joins Adarius Taylor and Riley Bullough as middle linebacker options in the wake of catastrophic injuries to starter Kwon Alexander and backup Jack Cichy.

Minter offers experience as well as familiarity with the Bengals, who the Bucs will be facing on Sunday. Now with the Bucs, he’ll look to reprise his performance with the Cardinals rather than his disappointing year in Cincinnati.

Buccaneers Work Out LB Kevin Minter

The Bucs’ search for linebacker help has led them to Kevin Minter, as Greg Auman of The Athletic tweets. Minter will audition for the team on Tuesday, and a deal could soon follow.

Bucs GM Jason Licht was in Arizona when Minter was drafted in 2013, so he’s familiar with what the veteran offers. Minter is still only 27 years old (28 in December) and had 81 tackles with 3.5 sacks for the Cardinals in 2016. Unfortunately, he was unable to offer a reprise of that performance last year with the Bengals. Minter played on fewer than 20% of the Bengals’ defensive snaps, seeing less action than sixth-round rookie Jordan Evans and barely playing ahead of undrafted free agent Hardy Nickerson. His season ended prematurely when a hamstring injury landed him on IR.

Minter was cut by the Jets in late August and did not land deals with the Giants or Texans despite working out for both teams in September. After losing ‘backers Kwon Alexander and Jack Cichy to IR, Minter may get an opportunity to play with the Bucs.

Buccaneers LB Jack Cichy Tears ACL

Kwon Alexander isn’t the only Buccaneers linebacker who suffered a torn ACL on Sunday, as an MRI revealed Jack Cichy will miss the rest of the 2018 season with the same injury, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter link).

This marks the second torn ACL of Cichy’s football career, as he previously suffered the injury in August 2017, just before the start of his final collegiate season at Wisconsin. Instead of taking a medical waiver and staying in Madison, Cichy entered the 2018 draft, and eventually was selected in the sixth round.

Cichy entered Sunday’s contest after Alexander had already gone down, playing outside linebacker while Adarius Taylor shifted to the middle to replace Alexander. With only four healthy linebackers — Taylor, Lavonte David, Cameron Lynch, and Devante Bond — still on their roster, the Buccaneers will need to make an addition this week. Kendell Beckwith is eligible to return from the non-football injury list, but given that he’s yet to practice, he’s probably not a realistic option.

The Buccaneers seem to have at least one candidate in mind to fill a linebacker void. Riley Bullough, who split the 2017 season between Tampa’s active and practice squad, was in town for a workout and physical, tweets Greg Auman of The Athletic. He reached an injury settlement with the Bucs earlier this year, and is now eligible to be re-signed.
