Titans Re-Sign TE Phillip Supernaw

The Titans have signed tight end Phillip Supernaw to a multi-year deal, according to Jim Wyatt of TitansOnline.com. The player was non-tendered by the organization earlier this week.

Since joining the Titans in 2014, Supernaw has become a key member of the special teams unit, collecting 16 tackles. He’s also seen some action at tight end, starting seven games over the past two years. During this time, the 27-year-old has hauled in seven receptions for 94 yards. Besides the Titans, the former undrafted free agent has also spent time with the Ravens, Chiefs, and Texans.

Supernaw is presumably penciled in as the team’s third tight end behind Delanie Walker and Jace Amaro.

Giants, Patriots Interested In OL D.J. Fluker

Free agent offensive lineman D.J. Fluker had scheduled a visit with the Giants, reports ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan (via Twitter). The reporter notes that the Patriots also have “strong interest” in the guard. The Chargers released the former first-round pick earlier this week.

D.J. Fluker (vertical)Instead of comitting $8.82MM to the lineman, the Chargers decided to release the four-year veteran. Fluker only missed five games in four seasons with the organization, starting each of his 59 games. Pro Football Focus wasn’t fond of his 2016 performance, ranking him 54th out of 72 qualified guards.

The website had rated Fluker more favorably when he was a tackle, a position he played during the first two seasons of his career. The rumored teams may be enticed by the 25-year-old’s versatility.

Fluker was listed as an honorable mention in our positional free agent rankings. ESPN’s Josina Anderson previously listed the Saints, Lions, Seahawks, Colts, Vikings, Giants, Cardinals, and Falcons as teams to watch when it came to the lineman.

Redskins Considering Mike Mayock For GM

Yes, you read that right. NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock is a candidate to become the next general manager of the Redskins, according to Adam Schefter and Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter). As previously reported, the Redskins are also considering ex-Bucs GM Mark Dominik.Mike Mayock (vertical)

For what it’s worth, Mayock denies having “official contact” with Washington. To us, that sounds like a technical denial rather than an outright one.

There has been no official contact between myself and the team and no interviews about the job,” Mayock said in a statement (Twitter link). “My focus and energy – as it typically is this time of year – is squarely focused on the NFL Draft and NFL Network’s coverage of that event…this year in my hometown of Philly!”

Mayock, a former NFL safety, is one of the game’s most colorful personalities. Considered to be a leading expert in talent evaluation (at least, in the field of broadcasting), Mayock could bring a lot to the table as the Redskins approach the draft during this turbulent time.

What Mayock doesn’t offer, however, is front office leadership experience. He has been working in sports broadcasting since the mid-90s and has been with the NFL Network for about 12 years, but he has never overseen a draft room, managed a salary cap, or otherwise been responsible for the roster of any football team at any level. Scouting acumen counts, but – as the Jets are finding out with GM Mike Maccagnan – it doesn’t guarantee success.

Interestingly, Washington is not likely to hire a GM until after the draft, Schefter writes. He adds that Mayock has been considered for other front office jobs at various points in his career, but has passed on those opportunities to remain on TV. It’s not clear whether he has been in the mix for top front office jobs or just scouting positions. It’s also not clear how serious any of those offers were. For what it’s worth, the 49ers hired a GM with zero front office experience this winter and they seem confident about it working out.

This week, the Redskins relieved Scot McCloughan of his duties as GM. Depending on who you ask, the move was made either because McCloughan has an ongoing issue with alcohol or because of in-fighting and jealousy.

If Mayock gets the job, you can expect the Redskins to target players with bubble butts, sand in the pants, and oily hips. Perhaps even a few guys who are natural benders and downhill thumpers.

Falcons Re-Sign CB Blidi-Wreh Wilson

The Falcons are re-signing cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson to a one-year deal, Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets. The former third-round pick initially joined the Falcons Blidi-Wreh Wilson (vertical)in late November.

Wreh-Wilson only appeared in a single game in 2016 after being released by the Titans in August. However, from 2013 through 2015, the 27-year-old appeared in 34 games (14 starts) with Tennessee. His best season came in 2014, when he compiled 57 tackles, 10 passes defended, and one interception.

The veteran may have an opportunity to carve out a role behind Keanu Neal and Ricardo Allen. He’ll be competing with Sharrod Neasman and Akeem King for snaps in the Atlanta secondary.

Dolphins Sign Lawrence Timmons

The Dolphins have signed linebacker Lawrence Timmons to a two-year, $12MM deal ($11MM guaranteed), reports ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter). The 10-year veteran met with the organization earlier today.

Lawrence Timmons (vertical)Timmons had only played for the Steelers since being selected in the first round of the 2007 draft, but we heard rumblings earlier this offseason that the veteran was likely to test free agency. Despite his age (31 in May), we ranked Timmons as the fifth-best available linebacker behind Dont’a HightowerZach BrownKevin Minter, and Perry Riley, so there was good reason for the player to secure another payday.

The 2014 second-team All-Pro had another solid season this year, compiling 114 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two interceptions. The veteran had started every regular season game for the Steelers since 2011, and he hasn’t missed a game since 2009.

Timmons will be joining a Dolphins team that is only rostering four linebackers in Koa Misi, Mike HullNeville Hewitt, and Trevor Reilly.

Panthers Sign Mike Adams

Mike Adams has found a new home. NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo reports (via Twitter) that the safety has signed a two-year deal with the Panthers.

Mike Adams (Featured)We learned earlier this week that the soon-to-be 36-year-old wouldn’t be returning to Indy, as the Colts were interested in younger targets. The Panthers apparently weren’t too worried about his age, and for good reason. After bouncing around the NFL, Adams caught on with the Colts in 2014 and proceeded to make a pair of Pro Bowls. He had another strong season in 2016, compiling 79 tackles, two forced fumbles, and two interceptions in 15 games.

Adams will be joining a Panthers safety corps that includes Tre Boston, Kurt Coleman, Colin JonesDean Marlowe, and Travell Dixon.

Adams was named the No. 14 safety on PFR’s positional free agent ranks,

Extra Points: Lang, Jones, Jeffery, Cyprien

Some assorted notes from around the NFL…

  • Free agent guard T.J. Lang will not be visiting the Broncos following the team’s signing of lineman Ronald Leary, tweets Mike Kliss of 9News. The second-best free agent interior lineman still has plenty of suitors, as he’s set to meet with the Lions and Seahawks. The Packers, his former team, also have interest.
  • Had the Cardinals not extended Chandler Jones, the pass rusher would have eaten up over $14MM of spending space as their franchise player in 2017. He’ll instead take up around $10MM of cap room in 2017, tweets Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.
  • Alshon Jeffery‘s one-year, $14MM deal with the Eagles is the largest non-franchise tag one-year pact in NFL history, according to the NFL Media Research Group (Twitter link via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com). Jeffery’s pact eclipsed Ryan Fitzpatrick‘s one-year, $12MM deal with the Jets.
  • The Jaguars didn’t make a contract offer to strong safety Jonathan Cyprien, Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union tweets. After spending four seasons in Jacksonville, the 26-year-old joined the Titans on a four-year, $25MM contract.
  • The Rams‘ release of defensive end Eugene Sims came with a failed physical designation, Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch tweets. The 31-year-old was let go by the team early this morning.
  • Akeem Spence said the Buccaneers expressed interest in bringing him back next season, but the defensive tackle needs a “fresh start,” tweets ESPN’s Michael Rothstein. Spence ultimately inked a three-year, $10.5MM deal with the Lions.
  • Rudy Ford ran a 4.25 at today’s Auburn Pro Day, tweets agent Blake Baratz. The safety was told earlier this week that he wasn’t healthy enough to participate at the combine. Baratz declares Ford “the most underrated prospect in the draft.”

Updates On Top Remaining Free Agents

Some big names came off the board on Wednesday and Thursday, but tons of notable free agents remain. Here’s a look at some of the notables who are still out there and where they stand:

  • Adrian Peterson, RB (Vikings): Poor, poor AD. As we summed up on Friday morning, there are no clear suitors for No. 28 at this time. Despite previous reports to the contrary, the Texans, Patriots, Raiders, Giants, and Seahawks are showing little to no interest in signing the veteran running back. The incumbent Vikings haven’t put an offer on the table since declining his bloated $18MM option. Peterson is one of the best running backs in NFL history, but teams are skeptical of what he can do as he looks to rebound from another serious right knee injury on the verge of his 32nd birthday. We know that there will be teams with interest in Peterson – perhaps even some of those aforementioned clubs – but Peterson is far from their Plan A and it doesn’t sound like any team wants to pay him like a top running back. Ultimately, Peterson seems likely to settle for a low-base, one-year deal with a good amount of performance incentives. His best payday, I think, would come from the Vikings. Peterson is a fan favorite and the organization would probably like to have him finish his career in purple. With all that said, Adrian’s dad publicly trashing the team probably isn’t helping matters. Adrian Peterson (vertical)
  • Eddie Lacy, RB (Packers): The Vikings, Seahawks, and incumbent Packers seem to be the frontrunners for Lacy at this time. The Seahawks will meet with Lacy, but they also have meetings scheduled with Latavius Murray and Jamaal Charles. The Vikings, of course, are looking into Peterson replacements. Even though Lacy has had problems with consistency and conditioning over the years, he’s my top-ranked running back in this year’s FA crop.
  • Dont’a Hightower, LB (Patriots): Hightower, surely, has interest from a number of clubs. But, for whatever reason, leaks have been kept to a minimum. For all the speculation about the Dolphins and other clubs swarming the non-rush linebacker, we’ve only heard talk of “positive” dialogue between Hightower and the Pats. The Patriots are more unpredictable than ever, but I think the most likely outcome is that he re-signs. Bill Belichick was cocky enough to trade Jamie Collins and Chandler Jones in the same year – and it obviously worked out – but I don’t think he’s crazy enough to also let Hightower leave.
  • Dontari Poe, DT (Chiefs): The defensive tackle market is starting to take shape. Brandon Williams has re-upped with the Ravens on a lucrative five-year, $54MM deal that includes $27MM in guarantees. Chris Baker, considered a run below Williams and Poe, has a three-year, $15.75MM with $9MM guaranteed. We had Williams and Poe fairly close to each other on the Top 50 list and the early thinking was that they could fetch similar contracts. However, the latest word is that he may have to settle for a one-year, prove-it deal. The Falcons, 49ers, and Redskins have been linked to Poe this week, but the Redskins might not be in the market for him anymore after adding Stacy McGee.
  • Johnathan Hankins, DT (Giants): Hankins’ camp has been keeping things on the QT. There have been estimates that he could fetch around $7MM to $8MM per year (or more) on a multi-year deal. The Giants would love to keep the soon-to-be 25-year-old and we’re sure that other teams want him too, but there have been zero leaks from his negotiations. Hankins may not be as good as Williams right now, but the age factor could allow him to approach or top his contract. Teams also might feel better about committing years and dollars to Hankins over Poe. Of course, it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison since Hankins is a 4-3 DT and Williams and Poe are 3-4 nose tackles. They are different players and they have different groups of suitors due to their scheme fits.
  • T.J. Lang, G (Packers): Lang is a talented guard, but teams are concerned about his surgically-repaired hip. Right now, the Packers, Lions, and Seahawks are known to be in the mix for him, but he might not sign right away as teams go over his medical info. Teams might want to see him work out in full before committing to him. He’s ranked No. 14 overall on my Top 50 list and was second only to Kevin Zeitler on our list of free agent interior linemen.
  • Martellus Bennett, TE (Patriots): There’s heavy mutual interest between the Raiders and Bennett and the Giants and Bills have also been linked to him. However, after the Giants spent a good chunk of coin to add Rhett Ellison, it’s not clear if Bennett is still a consideration. Bennett is far and away the best available tight end out there and he should fetch a nice payday for himself. It’s just not clear where that might be. A Patriots return can be ruled out after the Dwayne Allen trade. The Lions are also looking into tight ends, but we haven’t specifically heard about them reaching out to Bennett.
  • Jared Cook, TE (Packers): The second-best tight end on the board is drawing interest from the Lions and Bills. Contract talks with the Packers have reportedly broken off, so he could very well wind up leaving.
  • Jabaal Sheard, DE (Patriots): The Dolphins were linked to Sheard, but I’m guessing they’re no longer interested after acquiring William Hayes in a brilliant trade with the Rams on Thursday. He’s on his way to meet with the Colts and we haven’t heard a peep about any possible Pats reunion. Towards the end of the season, the feeling was that Sheard would not be back in New England.

Rams Officially Cut Tre Mason and Trey Watts

The Rams have officially cut running backs Tre Mason and Trey Watts, via the NFL transaction wire.

Tre Mason (vertical)Mason didn’t play at all last season as he dealt with an array of personal issues. The Rams placed the running back on the reserve/did not report list after he failed to show up to an August meeting, and subsequent reports indicated that he hadn’t contacted the organization in months.

Last March, Mason was arrested for reckless driving, resisting arrest, and possession of cannabis, and he was “admitted for evaluation” in July following an incident at his mother’s house. Former coach Jeff Fisher had expressed concern for his well-being, while tackle Greg Robinson said the player changed his phone number.

The 2014 third-round pick appeared in 25 games for the Rams (12 starts) during his first two seasons in the league. He collected 972 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 254 carries, and he added another 34 receptions for 236 yards and one score.

Meanwhile, Watts was suspended indefinitely in November after once again violating the league’s policy on substances of abuse. The former undrafted free agent ultimately played in 15 games with the Rams, compiling 48 all-purpose yards.

Following the move, the Rams now have a trio of running backs on their roster in Todd Gurley, Malcolm Brown, and Aaron Green.

Bears To Sign K Connor Barth

The Bears will sign kicker Connor Barth, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune tweets. The veteran will earn $155K guaranteed during the one-year deal.

Connor BarthThe 30-year-old kicker spent the 2016 season with Chicago, where he replaced long-time player Robbie Gould. The veteran ultimately converted an underwhelming 78.3-percent of his field goals. Fortunately, he was a bit more accurate on extra points, missing only one in 32 attempts.

Over his eight-year NFL career, Barth has connected on 84-percent of his field goals and 99-percent of his extra points. Besides the Bears, Barth has spent time with the Buccaneers, Broncos, Chiefs, Dolphins, and Saints.

We ranked Barth as one of the better kickers available this offseason, though there were seven others ahead of him.
