Panthers Acquire No. 136 From Rams

The Panthers have acquired pick No. 136 from the Rams in exchange for Nos. 147 and 197, according to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times (Twitter link).

The Panthers used their newly-acquired pick on New Mexico State wideout Jaleel Scott. The six-foot-six receiver had a breakout campaign in 2017, hauling in 76 receptions for 1,079 yards and nine touchdowns. He’ll provide quarterback Joe Flacco with another talented target, and Scott will instantly become the tallest wideout on the team.

The Ravens have added a number of offensive pieces during the draft, including quarterback Lamar Jackson, lineman Orlando Brown, and tight ends Hayden Hurst and Mark Andrews.

Packers Acquire Panthers’ No. 88 Pick

The Packers have acquired the No. 88 pick from the Panthers, Carolina announced. Green Bay will sacrifice pick Nos. 101 and 147.

Green Bay used this selection to draft linebacker Oren Burks out of Vanderbilt. Burks did not serve as a pure pass rusher with the Commodores; he registered 116 tackles as a senior last season and stopped seven ball-carriers behind the line of scrimmage.

Having made 228 career tackles, Burks could be set to come in and play on the inside in Green Bay’s defense and join the likes of Jake Ryan and Blake Martinez. Burks spent the first two seasons of his career as a defensive back before being moved to linebacker as a junior.

Packers Acquire No. 18 From Seahawks

The Packers have acquired the No. 18 overall pick from the Seahawks, per Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com (Twitter link). Green Bay will pick up No. 18 and No. 248 (seventh round) from Seattle, which will acquire No. 27, No. 76 (third round), and No. 186 (sixth round) per Jason Wilde of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

The Packers are using the pick on cornerback Jaire Alexander. The Louisville product was considered to be one of the top defensive back’s in the entire draft despite the fact that he was limited to only six games last season. He did appear in 13 games during the 2016 campaign, compiling 39 tackles and five interceptions. Green Bay acquired the No. 27 pick earlier tonight in a trade with the Saints.

We had heard several times that the Seahawks were interested in trading back in the draft. Seattle previously only had one pick during the first three rounds, and this trade will now give them a second selection during this span.

Browns Select Baker Mayfield No. 1 Overall

The Browns have a new franchise quarterback, as Cleveland has selected Oklahoma signal-caller Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

At various points in the pre-draft process, the Browns had reportedly been eyeing other quarterbacks, such as USC’s Sam Darnold and Wyoming’s Josh Allen. Instead, they’ve gone with a former Heisman Trophy winner in Mayfield in an effort to solidify their quarterback position for years to come.

Cleveland, of course, has been trying and failing to land a long-term passer for some time, and notably passed on prospects such as Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson in recent drafts. With a new general manager in place, and the first and fourth overall picks at their disposal, the Browns always seemed likely to use a top selection on a quarterback.

Mayfield, a former walk-on at both Texas Tech and Oklahoma, is a favorite of many in the analytic community, and posted at 3,700 yards and 35 touchdowns in each of his three campaigns for the Sooners. An excellent passer from the pocket, Mayfield stands at just over six feet tall.

The Browns acquired Tyrod Taylor from the Bills earlier this offseason, and also signed veteran backup Drew Stanton, so Mayfield isn’t expected to begin the 2018 season as the club’s starter. Cleveland has pledged to bring its next quarterback along slowly, but Mayfield could conceivably see the field as the year progresses.

As the first overall pick, Mayfield will sign a four-year, fully guaranteed contract that comes with a fifth-year option for the 2022 seasons. Mayfield’s deal should be worth nearly $33MM, per Over the Cap, including a $22MM signing bonus and a 2018 cap charge of roughly $5.9MM.

NFC East Notes: Dez, Giants, Redskins, Eagles

Dez Bryant wants to sign with the Giants after being released by the division-rival Cowboys last week, but a current New York wideout isn’t on board with that idea. In a now-deleted Instagram story, Giants receiver Brandon Marshall said there was “no room” for Bryant on Big Blue’s roster, as Jaclyn Hendricks of the New York Post writes. Marshall, for his part, bombed during his first campaign in New York, as an ankle injury limited him to just five games and 18 receptions. Viewed as a possible cap casualty heading into the offseason, Marshall has surprisingly stuck on the Giants’ roster to this point. New York could still release Marshall at any point, however, and doing so would save the club in excess of $5MM in cap space.

Here’s more from the NFC East:

  • The Redskins were busy hosting draft prospects over the past two days, as Georgia running back Sony Michel, Ohio State center Billy Price, and Washington defensive lineman Vita Vea all visited the nation’s capital on Tuesday/Wednesday, according to John Keim of ESPN.com (all Twitter links). Michel would join a running back depth chart that already includes Chris Thompson, Samaje Perine, and Rob Kelley, while Price could start at either guard or center in lieu of Arie Kouandjio or Chase Roullier, respectively. Vea, meanwhile, would help fill a gap at defensive tackle that the Redskins have already attempted to fill this offseason by showing interest in free agents such as Johnathan Hankins and Bennie Logan.
  • Southern Methodist wideout Courtland Sutton met with the Cowboys on Wednesday, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Dallas has a gaping need at receiver after cutting Bryant, as their roster is currently littered by second- and third-tier pass-catchers. Allen Hurns, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Deonte Thompson, and Ryan Switzer front the Cowboys’ WR depth chart, but Sutton — who is viewed as either a first- or second-round selection — could give Dallas a potential No. 1 wideout. The 6’4″, 215-pound Sutton posted at least 1,000 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns in each of the past two seasons.
  • The Eagles hosted running backs Derrius Guice (LSU) and Rashaad Penny (San Diego State) on Tuesday, reports Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Guice is widely considered 2018’s second-best running back prospect behind Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, and there’s no guarantee he’ll still be on the board when Philadelphia picks at the end of round one. While the Eagles lost LeGarrette Blount to the Lions during the free agent period, they still have Jay Ajayi, Corey Clement, Wendell Smallwood, and Donnel Pumphrey on their roster.
