Saints To Bring Back DT Jay Bromley

Jay Bromley‘s spent a couple of weeks on the NFL in-season workout circuit, but the defensive tackle will rejoin the Saints.

With Tyeler Davison battling a foot injury, the Saints will bring back Bromley after cutting him prior to the regular season, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

The former third-round pick served as a Giants depth cog for four seasons, playing in 55 games from 2014-17. He joined the Saints in May before being released in September. Bromley’s since worked out for the Bills and Lions.

Bromley will join David Onyemata and rookie UDFA Taylor Stallworth as Saints defensive tackles, presumably set to play as a backup behind Onyemata in the event Davison must miss time. Davison started in Week 1 but missed the Saints’ Week 2 game. Onyemata started alongside Sheldon Rankins against the Browns.

Saints Still Tinkering At Linebacker

  • Demario Davis rated as a top-10 Pro Football Focus linebacker last year, doing so for his work as an inside linebacker. It was expected the high-priced free agent would man the middle for the Saints, but they’ve moved him to the weak side, NOLA.com’s Josh Katzenstein notes. Second-year man Alex Anzalone is now stationed as New Orleans’ middle ‘backer, but the team rotated he, Manti Te’o and A.J. Klein as Davis sidekicks in Week 1. Sean Payton said the team’s still determining how it will structure its linebacker usage. Davis played all 66 snaps in the Saints’ loss to the Buccaneers, while Anzalone led the others with 34. Klein functioned in Davis’ role in 2017, playing all of the Saints’ Week 1 snaps in his first game with the team.

Saints Release OL Jermon Bushrod

Jermon Bushrod‘s no longer on the Saints’ roster, and three running backs again are. The Saints released the veteran offensive lineman and promoted Jonathan Williams from their practice squad, Nick Underhill of The Advocate and Mike Triplett of ESPN.com report (Twitter link).

A Pro Bowler with the Saints in 2011 and 2012, Bushrod spent the past five seasons with the Bears and Dolphins. He re-signed with the Saints on a one-year deal. However, the 34-year-old blocker missed two practices this week due to non-injury reasons, per Underhill.

It’s possible the Saints could bring back Bushrod, but for now, the 12th-year veteran is unattached. The Saints re-signed Michael Ola and Josh LeRibeus this week, though, perhaps signalling they’re OK with younger players working as second-stringers up front. Bushrod started 10 games for the Dolphins last season and has 122 career starts.

Affiliated with the Saints since midway through last season, Williams will join Alvin Kamara and Mike Gillislee as New Orleans’ Week 1 backs. Williams has not played in a game since doing so as a rookie for the 2016 Bills. The Saints signed Gillislee earlier this week after sorting through a few Mark Ingram-replacement options this offseason.
