Nixon generated significant draft buzz after his college career at Iowa. His final season with the Hawkeyes in 2020 included 5.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss, though he fell to the fifth round that year. He played sparingly as a rookie, and has met injury troubles early in his pro career. Despite the move, Carolina has a number of options to call on in a rotational role behind Derrick Brown and Matt Ioannidis.
The roster cutting by the Bengals was necessary with today being the time at which Bates’ time on the Commissioner’s Exempt List expired. The franchise-tagged safety was the final holdout of the 2022 offseason, inking his tender long past the deadline for a long-term deal to be finalized. Fully back to team practices and activities, Bates’ time on the list allowed him to ramp up at his own rate following a lengthy absence throughout the spring and summer.
Lancaster was one of several additions the Raiders made on the d-line during free agency. The former UDFA spent the first four years of his career in Green Bay, registering 10 starts in 2019. Other signings such as Bilal Nichols and Andrew Billings will see plenty of playing time along the defensive interior in his absence.

Houston was the only member of the Lions’ 2022 rookie class that failed to make the initial 53-man roster. The young linebacker should have a good chance to land on the team’s 16-man practice squad Wednesday, if he can clear waivers. On the other hand, undrafted defensive lineman Demetrius Taylor found his way onto the roster after a disruptive preseason. Another undrafted rookie, running back Greg Bell, didn’t make the roster, but will remain with the team on Detroit’s injured reserve.
There were a number of surprising, but necessary, cuts today. Igwebuike had a decent chance to make the roster due to his experience and ability returning kicks. Kennedy led the team in catches, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns during the preseason. His lack of effective use on special teams likely lost him his spot on the final roster. Parker started much of last year at nickel for the Lions. Unfortunately he was expendable after the offseason additions of veteran JuJu Hughes and rookie Chase Lucas.
The winner of the kicking battle has been crowned as Austin Seibert made the final roster over Patterson. Patterson showed plenty of ability during the last couple of weeks and it would be no surprise if he was to be claimed by another team off waivers by tomorrow.
Finally, it appears the backup quarterback battle was won by David Blough, who outperformed Boyle in preseason. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Detroit peruse the mass of recently waived players for a new quarterback. They have the second-highest priority on the waiver wire and should have their pick of the litter if they think they can improve on Blough.

Lions To Re-Sign C.J. Moore
The Lions have agreed to re-sign C.J. Moore (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). Once finalized, it’ll be a one-year deal worth up to $2.4MM. The deal also includes $800K guaranteed, marking a big step up for the special teams ace.
Moore, 27 in December, has also seen some time on defense, including Week 14 against the Cardinals. In that game, he notched his first ever NFL interception as Detroit upset Arizona 30-12. He also notched a 28-yard run against the Rams in Week 7 for his second-ever rushing attempt as a pro.
All in all, Moore tallied 22 tackles and one interception in 2021. His special teams work, meanwhile, earned him an overall score of 82.6, according to the advanced metrics at Pro Football Focus. That figure was good for 26th in the league out of 218 qualified players.
At $2.4MM, the Lions have effectively matched the original round tender that Moore could have received as a restricted free agent. The key difference, however, is that they won’t have to worry about another team prying him away.
Lions Sign 13 UDFAs
On Friday, the Lions added 13 undrafted rookies to their roster. Here’s the full rundown:
- Nate Becker, TE (Miami, Ohio)
- Beau Benzschawel, G (Wisconsin)
- Malik Carney, LB (UNC)
- Jonathan Duhart, WR (Old Dominion)
- Tre Lamar, LB (Clemson)
- C.J. Moore, S (Ole Miss)
- Matt Nelson, T (Iowa),
- Donald Parham, TE (Stetson)
- Anthony Pittman, LB (Wayne State)
- Ryan Pope, T (San Diego State)
- Micah St. Andrew, G (Fresno State)
- Ray Smith, DT (Boston College)
- Kevin Strong, DT (Texas San-Antonio)
The Lions did not select any offensive linemen in the draft, so they went ahead and inked four OLs in Benzschawel, Nelson, Pope, and St. Andrew. With that in mind, the players in this group may have decent odds of making the final cut from the 90-man roster to the final 53.
