49ers Sign CB Teez Tabor
The 49ers have signed former Lions cornerback Teez Tabor to the practice squad, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). To make room, they’ve released tackle Ryan Pope.
Tabor, a second-round pick in 2017, lasted just two seasons in Detroit. He showed great promise coming out of Florida and earned All-SEC accolades in back-to-back years, but the 23-year-old logged just five total starts, 39 total tackles, and no interceptions before being released by the Lions in late August.
Tabor won’t turn 24 until December and is said to have strong zone coverage skills. With the Niners, he could be a backstop for Ahkello Witherspoon and Jason Verrett, who are both dealing with injuries. On a related note – the Niners were also said to be considering their old friend Dontae Johnson, former Raider David Amerson, and eight-year NFL veteran Coty Sensabaugh this week, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

LS Jon Condo Announces Retirement
Jon Condo is calling it a career. The veteran long snapper announced on Twitter that he’s decided to retire.
“After serious thought I’ve decided it is time to hang the cleats up. I’m thankful for the opportunity the 49ers gave me but realized after yesterday’s game that I am not 100% committed to playing this game and it would have been unfair to the organization to continue playing.
“I would also like to thank all of the organizations who believed in me throughout my career and gave me the opportunity to compete.
“I’m at the point in my life where my focus has shifted and I realize the most important thing for me is being mentally and physically healthy for my 3 young children and wife.”
The 2005 undrafted free agent out of Maryland ended up putting together a 15-year career that saw him appear in 181 total games. During his career, Condo had stints with the Cowboys, Patriots, Raiders, Falcons, and 49ers. During his tenure in Oakland, Condo earned a pair of Pro Bowl nods.
After appearing in only four games last season, the 38-year-old joined the 49ers last week. The team had initially turned to Colin Holba as they looked to replace the suspended Kyle Nelson, but the team ended up replacing the former sixth-rounder with Condo. The veteran went on to play in Sunday’s win over the Steelers.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that he was notified of Condo’s decision this morning. ESPN’s Nick Wagoner tweets that the team is expected to sign a long snapper in the next 24 hours.
49ers Sign Sam Young
The 49ers signed tackle Sam Young to a one-year deal, per a club announcement. In a corresponding move, they have placed wide receiver Trent Taylor on injured reserve.
Young, 32, worked out for SF earlier this week. Prior to that, he also showed his stuff for his old squad, the Dolphins. The Niners, arguably, didn’t need to see Young audition this time around after having him in camp this summer. But, after checking his back, knees, tonsils, mobility, and whatever else, they’re happily welcoming him back.
Taylor, a fifth-round selection from Louisiana Tech in 2017, flashed potential as a rookie by logging 43 receptions for 430 yards. The Niners were hoping that he could make a return this season following August foot surgery, but that might not be in the cards at this point. At minimum, the Niners won’t be seeing him for another two months.
NFC Notes: Ramsey, 49ers, Zimmer, White
With another busy day of football news winding down, let’s take a look around the NFC:
- The 49ers are “not in” on Jalen Ramsey, a source tells Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports. San Fran isn’t interested in trading for the cornerback because of the level of compensation that the Jaguars are requesting (two first-rounders) and the sizable extension Ramsey will expect to sign.
- Jason Verrett, who has dealt with health issues throughout his career, has yet to make his debut for the 49ers and the cornerback hasn’t ruled out requesting a trade. Maiocco (as he relays in a separate piece) asked Verrett if he would ask for one if he continues to be inactive for games and the CB responded with “We’ll see what happens.”
- In an interview on NFL Network, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said he wants to coach until he’s 70-years-old. Zimmer turned 63 in June.
- Buccaneers LB Devin White continues to sit out of practice, as Josh Alper of PFT relays. White injured his knee during the team’s TNF game against the Panthers last week and coach Bruce Arians insinuated that White would not be out long. Now, it’s looking like his status for Tampa Bay’s Week 3 contest is in doubt.
