Derek Rivers

NFL Practice Squad Updates: 12/15/23

Friday’s practice squad adjustments:

Indianapolis Colts

Seattle Seahawks

Rivers finds his way to the practice squad injured reserve list, making room for Hambright to return after being released from the squad yesterday.

Rashed finally finds his way onto a roster in 2023 after failing to make the Buccaneers 53-man roster in August. He comes in as a replacement for outside linebacker Tyreke Smith, who was signed away from Seattle onto the Cardinals active roster today.

NFL Practice Squad Updates: 12/7/23

Today’s practice squad moves:

Baltimore Ravens

Houston Texans

Indianapolis Colts

Los Angeles Chargers

New Orleans Saints

San Francisco 49ers

As expected, Tyrion Davis-Price has landed back with the 49ers after getting cut by the big-league club earlier this week. The 2022 third-round pick has seen time in just one game for San Francisco this season, collecting 21 yards from scrimmage on six touches. He appeared in six games as a rookie, collecting 99 rushing yards. He’ll join Jeremy McNichols as the 49ers’ practice-squad options at RB.

Texans Release DE Derek Rivers, Place Him On Practice Squad

With the Texans working their way back towards a healthy roster, some depth pieces and injury replacements are going to find themselves fighting for a roster spot. This appears to be the case with defensive end Derek Rivers, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2.

In this still very young 2023 NFL season, Rivers has already been signed to the active roster three times. The first time he found himself waived two weeks into the regular season. He found his way back to the Texans’ practice squad before getting called back up to the active roster three days later. His second stint on the 53-man roster would last a little over a week before he was released again and re-signed to the practice squad a day later.

Rivers’ most recent trip through the revolving door started two days ago. This time he didn’t even last the week before the announcement today that he will be released and re-signed to the team’s practice squad. This time, though, the move doesn’t appear to be a part of his normal revolutions.

Houston recently designated both punter Cameron Johnston and offensive tackle Tytus Howard to return from injured reserve, opening the 21-day window for each player to return to the active roster from IR. If either is to make a return soon, a spot will need to be opened up on the roster. So, Rivers’ shortest stay on the active roster yet could be attributed to one of those players making a comeback this season.

Minor NFL Transactions: 10/4/23

Today’s minor moves from around the league:

Arizona Cardinals

Atlanta Falcons

Baltimore Ravens

Carolina Panthers

Denver Broncos

Houston Texans

Los Angeles Chargers

Miami Dolphins

New York Jets

Pittsburgh Steelers

  • Signed to active roster: TE Rodney Williams

Tennessee Titans

Mitchell could be a key piece back for Baltimore in the offensive backfield. After the season loss of running back J.K Dobbins, the Ravens have been operating with a committee that includes Gus Edwards, Justice Hill, Melvin Gordon, and Kenyan Drake. While just an undrafted rookie, Mitchell could immediately relieve the need for the use of Gordon or Drake off the practice squad. The East Carolina product flashed serious potential in the preseason and led the FBS last year with 54 runs of 10 or more yards.

Denver will certainly be hoping to add Browning back to its ailing defense soon. Especially with Randy Gregory finding himself off the roster today, Browning’s pass-rushing ability could be just what the team needs to get its defense back on track.

Here are this Friday’s minor NFL transactions:

Chicago Bears

Cincinnati Bengals

Houston Texans

Miami Dolphins

The Bears will now need a backup plan for their backup plan. Blackwell became the primary nickel cornerback in Chicago after the team placed Kyler Gordon on injured reserve. The loss of Blackwell will likely mean more responsibility for veteran defensive back Greg Stroman.

Harper was recently waived by Dallas in hopes that he would be able to sign with the Cowboys’ practice squad after clearing waivers, according to Todd Archer of ESPN. Unfortunately, they’ll lose control of his contract completely as Cincinnati exercised its waiver claim.

Rivers is being released with much the same intention as Harper, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2. Houston shouldn’t encounter as many hurdles as the Cowboys, though, since Rivers is a vested veteran and doesn’t need to hit the waiver wire before signing a new contract.

Minor NFL Transactions: 9/21/23

Here are Thursday’s minor moves:

Chicago Bears

Houston Texans

Minnesota Vikings

New Orleans Saints

New York Giants

San Francisco 49ers

The Bears released Peterman on Wednesday, but Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times notes the team was planning to use the roster spot to poach a player off a another team’s practice squad. Chicago’s effort did not produce a signing, however, leaving Peterman’s spot vacant. When a team makes an effort to sign a player off another club’s P-squad, the team can promote the player to its 53-man roster to keep him from being poached. The seventh-year QB, who is in his second season with the Bears, again give the team three active-roster QBs — along with Justin Fields and rookie Tyson Bagent.
