Jaguars Place Myles Jack On IR
Myles Jack is headed to injured reserve, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Jack has dealt with a number of injuries this season, so there’s no one known malady keeping him out of action.
Jack inked a four-year, $57MM extension with the Jaguars prior to the season, a deal that included $33MM guaranteed. Between 2017 and 2018, Jack played in 98% of Jacksonville’s snaps and notched 197 tackles.
As one of the league’s most talented linebackers, he’ll be missed on the field, even though this is a lost season for the 4-8 Jags. The 24-year-old finishes out the year with 66 tackles, one interception, and half-credit for a sack.
Prior to Week 13, Jack had not missed a game in his NFL career. Without the former second-round pick, third-year linebacker Donald Payne figures to hold down the fort at middle linebacker.
Jack hasn’t looked like his usual self this season, so he’ll look to heal up and enter 2020 at 100% health.

Packers Claim Tyler Ervin
On Monday, the Packers announced that they have claimed former Jaguars running back Tyler Ervin. In a related move, the Packers dropped kick returner kick and punt returner Tremon Smith.
Smith, a 2018 sixth-round pick, broke onto the scene early on with the Chiefs and earned NFL All-Rookie Team honors as a return man. He ultimately finished the 2018 season with 33 kick returns for 886 yards (26.8-yard average). He played sparingly on defense, despite being formally listed as a cornerback, compiling only five tackles and one pass defended in 14 games. The Chiefs also briefly experimented with him at running back on the practice field and in preseason. This year, he appeared in seven games for Green Bay and returned 13 kicks for 303 yards, good for a 23.3 yard average.
After their latest special teams shuffle, the Packers will return to action on Sunday to take on the Redskins at Lambeau Field. At 9-3, they have a 93% chance of reaching the playoffs, per FiveThirtyEight.
Jaguars To Stick With Gardner Minshew
Gardner Minshew initially landed the Jaguars’ starting quarterback job because of injury. He will now take over for a healthy Nick Foles.
The Jags announced Monday afternoon their sixth-round rookie passer has supplanted Foles. Despite the latter’s $22MM-AAV contract, Minshew relieved him during Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers. That setup will stick, which calls questions into Foles’ future.
Foles’ return from a broken collarbone injury brought two blowout losses — to the Colts and Jaguars — and the Bucs were delivering more of the same. However, Minshew oversaw a one-sided Jags defeat against the Texans and could not bring them back against the Bucs. He will have a chance to make his ninth start Sunday against the Chargers. The Washington State product went 4-4 while filling in for Foles.
Jacksonville gave Foles a four-year, $88MM deal — with $50MM guaranteed — despite seemingly no other serious suitors. The team had to make cap-related cuts because of its misstep with Blake Bortles, a move that forced them to carry $16.5MM in dead money this year. It might be too late for Doug Marrone to save his job, but the switch back to Foles certainly generates questions about the 30-year-old former Super Bowl MVP’s future in north Florida.
Foles has completed 65% of his passes this season. While Minshew sits at 61, the more elusive passer is averaging an additional yard per attempt — 7.3 to 6.3 — and has shown a better rapport with emerging wideout D.J. Chark. After throwing a touchdown pass Sunday, Minshew is up to 14 for the season compared to just five interceptions.
AFC South Notes: Jags, Tannehill, Funchess
As they limp towards the end of their second consecutive disappointing campaign, the Jaguars could be looking at a major organizational overhaul this offseason, as Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports writes. Several members of head coach Doug Marrone‘s staff believe Marrone will be fired at season’s end, and questions remain as to how long team president Tom Coughlin will remain with the club.
Indeed, La Canfora says members of Jacksonville’s front office are just as concerned about their job security as the team’s coaches and are beginning to explore opportunities elsewhere. Owner Shad Khan did consider a significant shakeup last year before opting to retain Marrone, Coughlin, and GM Dave Caldwell, but he may not be as patient this time. If Khan does elect to make a GM change, La Canfora names Scott Pioli as a potential replacement, and Patriots OC Josh McDaniels could be on the short list of replacements for Marrone.

- The Titans are interested in extending their relationship with quarterback Ryan Tannehill beyond 2019, and as La Canfora writes, the franchise tag could be in play for Tannehill. The tag would come with a roughly $27MM cap hit, but with Tannehill suddenly a hot commodity, the club could hit him with the tag as a precursor to a multi-year pact. Of course, much depends on how Tannehill finishes the season, and while the two sides are unlikely to engage in contract talks in the short term, Tannehill looks set to cash in once the season is over.
- Despite some hope that veteran wideout Devin Funchess would be returning to the field soon, the Colts have decided to shut him down for the year, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Funchess, who suffered a fractured collarbone during Indianapolis’ Week 1 loss to the Chargers, simply has not healed enough, per Rapoport, who says the plate inserted into the fracture did not work out as hoped. This is a difficult blow for the Colts, who have seen many of their top skill players miss time due to injury this year.
- The Texans have been in the news a great deal over the last two days. The team placed first-round rookie Tytus Howard on IR on Saturday, and today we learned that the club will operate without a GM in 2020. Houston also got some potentially exciting news, as J.J. Watt could return to the field in time for the playoffs.
Jaguars Activate LB Jake Ryan From NFI List
Out of game action for nearly two full seasons, Jake Ryan appears set to return to the field. The Jaguars activated the veteran linebacker from their NFI list Saturday, clearing the way for Ryan’s first game since the Packers’ 2017 regular-season finale.
The former Green Bay starter tore an ACL during the 2018 offseason and entered free agency on the heels of a lost season. Although the Jaguars expected Ryan to be ready for Week 1, an August setback shelved him for nearly three more months.
A fourth-round pick out of Michigan, Ryan started 27 games with the Packers. The ACL tear damaged his stock going into free agency, but the Jaguars — who hired ex-Packers DC Dom Capers this offseason — opted to take a chance on him via two-year, $8MM deal. Ryan’s injury likely prompted the Jags to guarantee him just $1MM and include a $5.5MM option bonus — due on the 22nd day of the 2020 league year — in the event he can display his old form.
On a Jaguars team that lost Telvin Smith in the offseason, Ryan will have a chance to convince the Jaguars to pick up that option. He combined for 160 tackles between the 2016-17 seasons, during which he served as a primary Green Bay starter at inside linebacker.
To make room on the 53-man roster, the Jags placed running back Tyler Ervin on IR.
Retired Jags LB Telvin Smith Arrested In Florida Home
Former Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith shocked the football world when he abruptly took a break from the NFL prior to the 2019 season, forfeiting his $9m salary. He is back in the news today after reports emerged that his house was flooded with police.
According to Vic Micolucci of WJXT4, multiple neighbors saw police arresting the 28 year old before towing his Black Cadillac Escalade. The police did not address the media tonight, but there has been speculation that a post on the official twitter account of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department describing the raid of a marijuana growing operation is referring to Smith’s home.
Without much confirmed and nothing officially announced, the situation remains a developing story and will be updated as updates emerge.
