Buccaneers Claim Sealver Siliga

The Buccaneers claimed defensive tackle Sealver Siliga off waivers from the Seahawks, a source tells Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times (on Twitter). Sealver Siliga (vertical)

Siliga saw time in four games this season and racked up five total tackles. Siliga saw time in 13 games (four starts) for the Pats last season and finished out with 29 tackles. Between 2013 and 2014, he totaled 5.5 sacks in limited action.

To make room, the Bucs are waiving undrafted rookie defensive end Channing Ward. The Ole Miss product was inactive for Sunday’s game versus the Bears. Ward went undrafted this year despite enjoying his best collegiate season as a senior. In 2015, he tallied 35 tackles (including 6.5 tackles for a loss) and 3.0 sacks.

Seahawks Waive RB Christine Michael

Well, no one saw this coming. The Seahawks have waived running back Christine Michael, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). To fill his spot, the Seahawks signed defensive tackle Sealver Siliga.Christine Michael (vertical)

[RELATED: Thomas Rawls Set To Return]

The release of Michael is a pretty good indication that Thomas Rawls is back and ready to rock. The expectation was that Rawls would draw a good share of the carries along with C.J. Prosise, leaving Michael as the No. 3 RB. Instead, it turns out that he is out of the picture altogether.

Michael bounced around in 2015 before returning to Seattle, where he enjoyed some success. Michael averaged 4.9 yards per carry with the Seahawks in a limited sample last year, a big improvement over his flat 3.4 per rush with the Cowboys earlier in the season. This year, Michael split the difference with a 4.0 yards per carry average, though he did add 20 catches for 96 yards across his nine games.

Because the trade deadline has passed, every player who is cut must pass through waivers. Therefore, each club will have its shot at claiming Michael in the next day or so, in reverse order of standings.

Minor NFL Transactions: 10/18/16

Tuesday’s minor moves from around the NFL:

  • The Steelers announced that they have signed offensive tackle Brian Mihalik to the team’s active roster off the Lions‘ practice squad. To make room, offensive lineman Matt Feiler was cut loose. Mihalik spent the 2016 offseason and part of training camp with Pittsburgh.
  • The Panthers have re-signed tight end Scott Simonson, as Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer tweets. To make room for him, the Panthers have cut defensive end Lavar Edwards, who recorded one sack this year. As Person notes (Twitter link), that’s more than the combined total that starters Kony Ealy and Charles Johnson (0.5) have between them.
  • The Colts announced that they have elevated wide receiver Tevaun Smith from their practice squad to the 53-man roster. Smith will take the place of fellow wideout Quan Bray, who’s now on IR with an ankle injury (via Kevin Bowen of the team’s website). Bray has only three catches this year, but he is the Colts’ primary return man.
  • The Seahawks announced that they have placed defensive tackle Garrison Smith on IR and signed defensive tackle Sealver Siliga to the 53-man roster.
  • The Saints have released cornerback Tony Carter from IR, tweets Nick Underhill of the Advocate.

Buccaneers Work Out Sealver Siliga, 10 Others

The Buccaneers have been busy during their bye week, as ESPN.com’s Adam Caplan reports (via Twitter) that the team worked out five players today: linebackers Quentin Gause and Brandon Hepburn, defensive tackle Sealver Siliga, defensive end Chris McCain, and wide receiver Da’Ron Brown. Howard Balzer (via Twitter) adds the names of six more players who auditioned for the Bucs: wide receivers Matt Hazel and Jamal Robinson, linebackers Jason Fanaika and Randell Johnson, tight end Clay Burton, and cornerback Robertson Daniel.

With starting defensive lineman Robert Ayers, Gerald McCoy, and Clinton McDonald missing this past weekend’s game, the Buccaneers are seeking some reinforcement up front. Siliga, 26, would automatically become one of the team’s most experienced lineman, as the former undrafted free agent has 26 career games under his belt. The defensive tackle played in 13 games for the Patriots in 2015 (four starts), compiling 28 tackles. Siliga briefly caught on with the Seahawks this past offseason, and he visited the Buccaneers back in September. McCain, another former undrafted free agent, appeared in 18 games for the Dolphins between 2014 and 2015, collecting seven tackles and two sacks.

The Buccaneers may be valuing depth when it comes to Hepburn and Gause, as the team only has four linebackers on the roster. Hepburn is the most experienced of the two, although the former Florida A&M standout hasn’t played an NFL game. Still, the 26-year-old has bounced between the Lions, Eagles and Cowboys over the past four years. Gause, a rookie linebacker out of Rutgers, previously spent time with the Eagles and Patriots.

The Buccaneers decision to audition Brown may be an indication that wideout Cecil Shorts won’t be ready for next week’s game. Brown, a seventh-round pick by the Chiefs in 2015, was released by the Patriots’ practice squad earlier this month.

NFL Workout Updates: 9/27/16

Tuesday is workout day in the NFL, and while we’ve dedicated full posts to the more notable tryouts, we’ll round up the stragglers here:

Sealver Siliga Visited Buccaneers

Free agent defensive tackle Sealver Siliga visited the Buccaneers this week, reports Jenna Laine of ESPN.com. Siliga has been available to sign anywhere since the Seahawks reached an injury settlement with him Sept. 2, but the Bucs are the only team that has shown public interest in him this month.

Siliga, 26, joined the Seahawks on a one-year, $1.4MM deal featuring $250K in guarantees back in March. He spent the previous three years in New England, where he started in 13 of 25 regular-season appearances and was part of a team that beat the Seahawks in the Super Bowl to conclude the 2013-14 campaign. For his career, which also includes a one-game appearance with the Broncos in 2012, Siliga has totaled 96 tackles, 5.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

As of now, the Buccaneers currently have four options at defensive tackle, as Roster Resource shows. Star Gerald McCoy and Clinton McDonald start, while Akeem Spence and DaVonte Lambert are Tampa Bay’s reserves. Spence collected 17 snaps in the Bucs’ Week 1 win over the Falcons. Lambert was inactive.

The Seahawks also announced that they’ve acquired defensive back Dewey McDonald (for a conditional 2017 pick, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com) from the Raiders, and, as we previously noted, acquired safety L.J. McCray from the 49ers.

Seahawks, Siliga Reach Injury Settlement

The Seahawks have reached an injury settlement with defensive tackle Sealver Siliga, according to his agency, DEC Management (Twitter link). Seattle placed Siliga on IR with a calf injury Tuesday, but he should be healthy and in search of employment soon, per DEC.

Seahawks’ Roster Now At 84

The Seahawks’ release of veteran defensive back Brandon Browner had already been reported, but now the club has officially confirmed the move, along with announcing several other transactions that moves their roster to 84 players. Seattle has until 3pm tomorrow to get to 75 men.

Waived:

  • FB Kyle Coleman
  • WR Montario Hunter

Extra Points: Jets, Bosa, Seahawks, Eagles

The Jets’ concerns over quarterback Christian Hackenberg‘s throwing mechanics will likely render this a redshirt year for the second-round rookie from Penn State, writes Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. Hackenberg was the fourth of 15 quarterbacks to come off the board during the draft, but he’s the only one who hasn’t yet appeared in a preseason game. He’s also lagging well behind fellow reserves Geno Smith and Bryce Petty on the Jets’ depth chart. As a result, the Jets will stash Hackenberg at the bottom of their 53-man roster this year and could tinker with his mechanics to a significant extent next offseason, according to Cimini. On the possibility of overhauling Hackenberg’s mechanics, Jets quarterbacks coach Kevin Patullo told Cimini, “That’s not something we’re going to get into right now. We’re just trying to see where he’s at, what he knows.”

More on Gang Green and a few other teams:

  • With Hackenberg guaranteed a roster spot and Smith, not Petty, set to serve as the Jets’ backup in their third preseason game on Saturday, it could spell doom for Petty, opines Brian Costello of the New York Post. If the team decides against keeping four QBs, Petty is likely to be the odd man out despite going in the fourth round of last year’s draft.
  • One anonymous NFL general manager blames the Chargers for the Joey Bosa debacle, tweets Michael Silver of NFL.com. “[The] Chargers essentially had first pick in draft since the two quarterbacks were going first. [They] could have made sure Bosa would accept the terms,” the GM said.
  • Thanks to an ankle injury to rookie Jarran Reed, recent signing Tony McDaniel could go into the season as a starting defensive tackle for the Seahawks, observes John Clayton of 710 ESPN Seattle. McDaniel isn’t yet a lock to crack the roster, though, as the Seahawks have decisions to make on him, fellow veteran Sealver Siliga and undrafted rookie Brandin Bryant. McDaniel seems to have the edge on those two, relays Clayton. Click here to read the interesting story of how McDaniel’s deal with the Seahawks came together.
  • Stephen Tulloch‘s one-year pact with the Eagles calls for a $1.75MM fully guaranteed base salary with nearly $47K in per-game bonuses that max out at $750K, per Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (on Twitter). He can also earn $750K through incentives.
  • In case you missed it, free agent safety Donte Whitner will visit the Panthers on Friday.
