Shane Ray On Ravens’ Roster Bubble?
Brought in along with Pernell McPhee after the draft, Shane Ray does not have a comfortable path to the Ravens’ 53-man roster. The former first-round pick is squarely on Baltimore’s bubble.
Ray is behind five other Raven edge defenders at present, with Jeff Zreibec of The Athletic noting (subscription required) the four-year Broncos cog will need a strong preseason to make the team.
The fifth-year pass rusher has flashed in practice, but Zreibec notes McPhee is ahead of him among the veteran contingent. So are 2017 second- and third-round picks Tyus Bowser and Tim Williams With the Ravens unlikely to keep six edge defenders, Ray has his work cut out for him entering the team’s preseason slate.
The Ravens added Ray shortly after May’s compensatory deadline and gave him a $1.2MM deal with $200K guaranteed. But vying with McPhee and recent Ravens Day 2 picks, with Matt Judon and rookie Jaylon Ferguson locks to make the team, made this an uncertain proposition from the start.
While he was a rotational presence on Denver’s Super Bowl champion team and registered eight sacks in 2016, Ray has not lived up to his first-round billing yet. He finished his Broncos tenure on a shaky note, being a healthy scratch at the conclusion of last season.
Ravens Trade Alex Lewis To Jets
Remember that time the Ravens released offensive lineman Alex Lewis? Well, that didn’t quite happen. 
Before formally releasing him, the Ravens struck a deal to trade Lewis to the Jets, as Rich Cimini of ESPN.com tweets. In the trade, the Jets will send a conditional 2020 seventh-round pick to Baltimore.
It’s not uncommon for teams to intend on releasing a player before an eleventh-hour deal was struck. Often times, teams will leak word of an impending release via the press in order to solicit interest. In this case, the Ravens told Lewis directly that he would be released, so it’s likely that they connected with the Jets after failing to find a trade in discussions with other teams.
It’s a mild return for the Ravens, but they did manage to recoup something for a player who was owed $2MM for 2019 and was about to be released anyway. For the Jets, it’s a modest expenditure that could pay some dividends – Lewis is a former starter who can provide depth along the offensive line. Meanwhile, they will get him into the fold immediately without having to first vie for his services against other clubs.
Ravens Release OL Alex Lewis
The Ravens have released Alex Lewis, according to a social media post from the offensive lineman. Just this week, Lewis was cleared for action, but he’s apparently not part of the team’s plans for 2019.
The Ravens shopped Lewis before cutting him and there was trade interest in him in recent days, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. That suggests that the former starter won’t be out of work for very long, especially after passing a physical.
Before today, Lewis was expected to compete for the Ravens’ starting left guard job. Over his last two healthy years (interrupted by a torn labrum in 2017), Lewis has made 18 starts in total.

Ravens Exploring Brynden Trawick Reunion
- The Ravens boast one of the NFL’s premier secondaries and auditioned another Pro Bowler who could potentially fill a role there. Safety Brynden Trawick worked out for his former team recently, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Trawick is known more for his special teams acumen, having made the 2017 Pro Bowl as a Titans special-teamer. But Trawick began his career in Baltimore, the former UDFA playing three seasons with the Ravens from 2013-15.
Ravens Release Jordan Lasley
The Ravens released wide receiver Jordan Lasley, according to a team announcement. When speaking with reporters, head coach John Harbaugh explained that the 2018 fifth-round pick was cut because of football reasons and not his conduct in a chippy practice on Monday. 
Earlier this week, Lasley traded blows with cornerback Cyrus Jones and the two had to be separated by players and coaches. Soon after he returned to the field, Lasley caught a touchdown pass and launched the ball over the fence into a nearby pond.
“When you score in the red zone [and] you get a touchdown, you launch it in the pond,” Lasley said. “I learned that from Michael Crabtree.”
Still, it was not the airborne ball that got Lasley cut, nor was it the scrap. Harbaugh explained that he’d never cut a player for getting into a fight at practice. Rather, Lasley, who did not play last year, simply wasn’t a fit for Baltimore.
Without him, the club still has Willie Snead, Marquise Brown, Chris Moore, Miles Boykin, Michael Floyd, and a host of other wide receivers to consider.

Ravens’ Marquise Brown Medically Cleared
Marquise Brown‘s stay on the Ravens’ active/PUP list looks to be nearing an end. The first-round wide receiver received medical clearance on Tuesday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com tweets.
After passing his conditioning test last week, Brown has since passed his physical. The Oklahoma-produced deep threat has been rehabbing a Lisfranc injury since before the Combine. Brown, who underwent foot surgery in January, is now on track to play in each of Baltimore’s preseason games, Hensley adds (on Twitter).
This is welcome news for a Ravens team that has a few new skill-position contributors around a developing quarterback. John Harbaugh recently said this new Ravens offense will “change the way offensive football is played in the National Football League.” Brown stands to play a major role in that lofty aspiration coming to fruition.
Brown joins Mark Ingram and third-round pick Miles Boykin as key Ravens newcomers. But the former Sooner represents the team’s top offseason investment. He posted two 1,000-yard seasons at Oklahoma and averaged north of 17 yards per catch in each.
