Colts Activate OL Joe Haeg

The Colts will be getting some reinforcement on their offensive line. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that the team has activated Joe Haeg from the injured reserve. To make room on the roster, the team has waived Denzelle Good.

Haeg, a 2016 fifth-round pick out of North Dakota State, had started 29 of his 31 games through his first two seasons in the NFL. The 25-year-old started the Colts’ first three games this season, but he landed on the injured reserve towards the end of September. His versatility (he’s previously played right guard, right tackle, left tackle and left guard) will make him a valuable depth piece down the stretch.

The Colts offensive line has been solid this season, so Haeg might not immediately earn his previous starting role (Indy has been rolling with a starting line of Anthony Castonzo, Quenton Nelson, Ryan Kelly, Braden Smith, and Le’Raven Clark). Considering Haeg’s starting experience, he’ll likely see backup reps ahead of Mark Glowinski, Evan Boehm, and Josh Andrews.

Good has been with the Colts since the team selected him in the seventh round of the 2015 draft. The 27-year-old has started 20 of his 26 career games, including one of his two appearances this season.

Colts To Activate Joe Haeg

The Colts will activate tackle/guard Joe Haeg in advance of Sunday’s game against the Jaguars, the team announced. Haeg was designated for return two weeks ago and has looked healthy enough in practice to warrant a return to the field.

The third-year pro was placed on IR in late September after suffering an ankle injury in the Colts’ Week 3 loss to the Eagles. Prior to that, Haeg started the team’s first three games of the season at right tackle.

Even without Haeg, the Colts’ offensive line has been dominant over the last two months. From Weeks 5 through 12, Andrew Luck attempted 239 passes without being sacked, which was the third-longest such streak in NFL history. All in all, the front five has allowed just eleven sacks on the year, which is the lowest total in the NFL.

Haeg is the second of two players activated off of IR by the Colts this season, meaning that they cannot bring anyone back from IR again this year. The first slot was burned earlier this month when second-round pick Tyquan Lewis was brought onto the 53-man roster.

The Colts, who are riding a five-game winning streak, will look to stay on the right path when they face the Jaguars in Jacksonville on Sunday. According to Five Thirty Eight, they still have a 29% chance of reaching the playoffs with a 10% shot at capturing the AFC South title.

Fritz Pollard Alliance Recommends HC Candidates

Every year, the Fritz Pollard Alliance releases a list of recommended minority head coaching candidates. This year’s edition is nearly double in size and features the likes of Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores and Cowboys defensive backs coach/defensive passing game coordinator Kris Richard, as Mike Jones of USA Today writes. 

Here’s the complete list of suggested candidates:

  • Keith Armstrong (Falcons special teams coordinator)
  • Teryl Austin (Former Bengals defensive coordinator)
  • Eric Bieniemy (Chiefs offensive coordinator)
  • Jim Caldwell (former Lions and Colts head coach)
  • George Edwards (Vikings defensive coordinator)
  • Brian Flores (Patriots linebackers coach)
  • Leslie Frazier (Bills defensive coordinator)
  • Raheem Morris (Falcons assistant head coach/wide receivers coach)
  • Hue Jackson (special assistant to the head coach of the Bengals; former Browns head coach)
  • Kris Richard (Cowboys defensive backs coach/defensive passing game coordinator)
  • Duce Staley (Eagles assistant head coach/running backs coach)

Flores, the de facto defensive coordinator of the Patriots, figures to be a hot coaching candidate this year. The same goes for Bieniemy, who is helping to guide one of the league’s most dangerous offenses.

Others on this list, such as Jackson and Austin, seem unlikely to garner real consideration for head coaching positions this offseason. The Browns turned the corner after dumping Jackson and appointing Gregg Williams as the team’s interim head coach, which isn’t a great endorsement for the offensive guru. Meanwhile, the Bengals hired Austin in January but fired him earlier this month as his defense was one of the lowest ranked in the NFL.

Colts Sign TE Clive Walford

The Colts signed tight end Clive Walford, according to a team announcement. Walford will help fill in for Jack Doyle, who was placed on injured reserve earlier this week.

Colts tight ends have caught 18 of Luck’s 32 touchdown passes this season, so Walford may have an opportunity to shine in Indianapolis. Then again, eleven of those TD grabs belong to Eric Ebron, and the UNC product figures to be the primary tight end going forward. The Colts also have tight ends Erik Swoope, Mo Alie-Cox, and Ryan Hewitt on the roster, though they were sidelined on Sunday.

Walford, a third-round pick of the Raiders in 2015, missed the Jets’ final cut in the offseason. His best season came in 2016 when he hauled in 33 catches for 359 yards and three scores. Last year, he had just nine catches for 80 yards with Oakland. He’s worked out for multiple clubs in recent months, including the Seahawks, Bengals, Lions, and Packers.

Le'Veon Bell Wants To Join Colts?

  • This week, Bell hinted on Instagram that he would like to join the Colts and team up with quarterback Andrew Luck (via ESPN.com’s Mike Wells). It’s not clear whether the Colts will be players for the Steelers running back, but they will be armed with a league high of $120MM+ in cap space.

Marlon Mack In Concussion Protocol

  • After going down with a concussion against the Dolphins, Colts running back Marlon Mack is “iffy” for Week 13, tweets Mike Chappell of Fox59. Mack missed three games with a hamstring injury earlier this year, but has averaged 16.5 carries per game since as Indianapolis’ lead back. The 6-5 Colts face a winnable game against the Jaguars next Sunday as they fight for a playoff spot, and would turn to Jordan Wilkins and Nyheim Hines to play more snaps if Mack can’t go.

Colts To Place Jack Doyle On IR

The surging Colts are likely to see a key cog in their offense head to injured reserve. Jack Doyle suffered an injury Sunday that will send him to IR, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports (subscription required).

It’s a kidney injury, Frank Reich said (via Mike Chappell of Fox 59). Reich said Doyle was hospitalized because of this ailment and underwent a procedure.

Teaming with touchdown maven Eric Ebron, Doyle caught one of Andrew Luck‘s TD passes Sunday — Indianapolis’ fifth straight win — but appears set to see his season end early. Doyle missed five games earlier this season because of a hip injury but had returned to play in the Colts’ past three contests.

Indianapolis was down to just Ebron and Doyle on Sunday, with Erik Swoope, Mo Alie-Cox and Ryan Hewitt out. The Colts are likely to consider adding a reinforcement at this position, Holder notes.

Colts tight ends have caught 18 of Luck’s 32 touchdown passes this season. Though Ebron’s 11 TD grabs comprise much of that total, Doyle scored twice in limited action.

Swoope and Alie-Cox’s five combined scores make them potentially promising fill-ins, but their injuries complicate matters. An 80-reception, 690-yard season sent Doyle to the Pro Bowl last year. He’s signed through 2019 but has no guaranteed money remaining on a three-year, $18.9MM deal.
