Jaguars S Calvin Pryor Placed On IR

This has been a rough month for Calvin Pryor. On Monday, the Jaguars placed the safety on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Calvin Pryor (vertical)

It’s not immediately clear whether Pryor’s injury is a season-ender or if he could conceivably return during the season. Even if Pryor can recover in time for a midseason return, the Jaguars may or may not be willing to burn an IR-DTR slot on him.

Pryor, a former first-round pick of the Jets, was jettisoned to the Browns this offseason in a trade for linebacker Demario Davis. The Browns planned to give him significant playing time, but he was cut earlier this month after getting into a fight with teammate Ricardo Louis. The Jaguars claimed him the next day with the hope that he could help provide support for starting strong safety Barry Church. Instead, he’ll have to focus his energy on recovering – potentially with an eye on playing again next season.

Jaguars Sign QB Ryan Nassib

The Jaguars announced that they have signed quarterback Ryan Nassib. Nassib currently sits as the team’s No. 3 QB behind Blake Bortles and Chad Henne, though that order could be rearranged after Sunday’s 37-16 loss to the Titans. Ryan Nassib (vertical)

Nassib served as Eli Manning‘s backup in New York for several years. His connection with Jaguars czar Tom Coughlin undoubtedly paved the way for his new opportunity in Jacksonville. He also has some history with Doug Marrone from their time together in Syracuse.

Nassib never got to make a start for the G-Men and they didn’t make an attempt to re-sign him this offseason. In June, he hooked on with the Saints, but he was released prior to the 53-man roster deadline in early September. He was said to be neck-and-neck with Garrett Grayson for the Saints’ QB3 spot, but both players were cut and that role has since been filled by BYU product Taysom Hill.

Nassib occupies the QB3 spot for now, but that could change if the team opts to bench Bortles for the entire season so that they do not risk him getting injured and collecting on $19MM+ in 2018 when they don’t want him. In that scenario, Henne would take over as the starter with Nassib as his backup.

Jaguars Sign WR Max McCaffrey

The Jaguars have signed wide receiver Max McCaffrey, the team announced. McCaffrey, the brother of Panthers rookie running back Christian McCaffrey, was plucked from the Saints’ practice squad. Max McCaffrey (vertical)

Jacksonville was in desperate need of depth at wide receiver after losing star Allen Robinson for the season to a torn ACL. With Oklahoma product Dede Westbrook also on IR, the Jaguars will plug McCaffrey in as their fifth wide receiver behind Marqise Lee, Allen Hurns, Arrelious Benn, and UDFA Keelan Cole.

The Jaguars enjoyed a surprisingly strong start to the season when they toppled the Texans 29-7 on Sunday. Rookie Leonard Fournette did most of the damage with 100 rushing yards plus three catches for 24 yards while Hurns led all receivers with three grabs for 42 yards. If the Jaguars want to continue their winning ways, they’ll probably need to do more through the air going forward.

Cardinals’ Calais Campbell Offer Topped Out At $9MM AAV

The Cardinals were not willing to enter the same ballpark as the Jaguars or Broncos did in the Calais Campbell sweepstakes in March.

An Uninterrupted video (YouTube link) reveals Campbell wanted his agent, Tom Condon, to take the Jaguars’ $15MM-per-year offer back to the Cardinals to see if they’d match. Condon was fairly certain the Cardinals wouldn’t, and although he did call GM Steve Keim back, both Keim and Cards football administration director Mike Disner told the agent they didn’t want to hear Jacksonville’s updated offer because they did not believe they could match whatever it was.

This video lists the Cardinals’ top proposal at $9MM AAV over three years, and the Cards are categorized as being out of the running early in the frenetic process.

Campbell said $15MM per year would have been enough for the Cardinals to keep him off the UFA market. The 31-year-old defensive end felt his age would keep him off the Fletcher Cox/Muhammad Wilkerson/J.J. Watt tier — each makes north of $16MM annually — but viewed $15MM annually as a reasonable goal.

The Jaguars ended up meeting that standard on the fourth offer. Jacksonville initially offered $11MM per year, which Washington matched, according to the video. Both teams then submitted $12MM-AAV proposals. The Jags improved their proposal to $14.75MM per year, inducing a celebration from Campbell and his inner circle. The video does not show an additional Redskins proposal.

But the Broncos’ offer — one confirmed to be for $13MM annually with $26MM guaranteed in the first two years of the deal (Jacksonville’s pact came with $30MM guaranteed in Years 1-2) — “changed the game” for the Denver native. While some members of his camp thought the Broncos were the better legacy play, Campbell also said the Jaguars were building something. Campbell mentioned earlier in the video the Redskins, on the surface, presented a better chance to win the Super Bowl than the Jaguars.

The Jaguars elevated their proposal to the $15MM-per-year target Campbell sought, though, and he decided to choose the Jaguars over the Broncos. Denver’s three-year offer included a third-year option for $10MM, Campbell said in this piece.

The video also shows Campbell calling former Detroit Pistons and Denver Nuggets stalwart Chauncey Billups for advice. Condon mentioned the state income tax disparity between Florida and Colorado as a selling point for the Jaguars. Condon chuckled over the phone when Campbell asked him to see if the Cardinals would match the Jaguars’ $15MM-per-year offer, but Campbell insisted his agent make the call anyway.

Campbell played nine seasons with the Cards. His age-31 season’s off to a banner start. He leads the NFL with four sacks after leading the charge in the Jaguars’ 10-sack performance against the Texans.

Allen Robinson Done For Season

Jacksonville crushed AFC South rival Houston to open the season on Sunday, but if the Jaguars are going to continue to thrive in 2017, they’ll have to do it without their top wide receiver. The team confirmed Monday that Allen Robinson suffered a torn ACL in his left knee Sunday and will miss the remainder of the season, per the Associated Press.

Allen Robinson

This seemed like the probable outcome for Robinson after he went down with a non-contact injury in the first quarter against the Texans and was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game. While the Robinson-less Jaguars still managed to coast to a 29-7 victory, having to make do without him for the remainder of the year will be a tall order.

Robinson posted at least 73 catches, 151 targets, 883 yards and six touchdowns in each of the previous two years, for one, and the Jags’ receiving corps already took a hit earlier this month when they placed rookie fourth-round pick Dede Westbrook on injured reserve. They’re now down to Marqise Lee and Allen Hurns, the latter of whom has fallen out of favor since last season, as their top options in a passing game that doesn’t inspire much confidence with Blake Bortles at the helm.

The 24-year-old Robinson, meanwhile, may have played his final game as a member of the Jaguars. The 2014 second-round pick is scheduled to hit free agency after the season and could’ve made a case for a monster contract with another big year. Instead, thanks to his knee injury, he’ll enter the offseason in a less-than-ideal position.

Jaguars WR Allen Robinson Has ACL Injury

Jaguars wideout Allen Robinson suffered a “significant” knee injury during today’s game against the Texans, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link), and Jacksonville fears Robinson has a torn ACL, tweets Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The Jaguars have now officially confirmed that Robinson has an ACL injury to his left knee, and head coach Doug Marrone will provide a further update on Monday."<strong

While details are slim as of yet, Robinson went down early with a non-contact injury, struggled to make it to the sideline, and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of today’s contest. While further test results will surely leak out, an ACL injury appeared to be the most obvious diagnosis.

Jacksonville already lost one wideout prior to the season, as the club placed rookie pass-catcher Dede Westbrook on injured reserve with a “core” injury. But the absence of Robinson — clearly Jacksonville’s most talented wide receiver — would represent a much more serious loss. Even in a down 2016, Robinson posted 73 receptions and six scores, while he managed 80 catches, 1,400 yards, and a league-leading 14 touchdown receptions the year prior.

Without Robinson, the Jaguars would turn to Marqise Lee and Allen Hurns as their top two wide receivers, with Arrelious Benn and Keelan Cole available behind that duo. Amba Etta-Tawo, currently on Jacksonville’s practice squad, could be promoted, while the Jags could also consider a free agent. Players such as Victor Cruz (whom the Jaguars hosted earlier this year), Vincent Jackson, Stevie Johnson, and Marquess Wilson are among the options available on the open market.

Alternatively, Jacksonville could lean even more heavily on the running game, something they did in today’s victory over the Texans. Rookie running back Leonard Fournette handled 26 carries on Sunday, while backup Chris Ivory rushed nine times. Quarterback Blake Bortles attempted only 21 passes, but the Jaguars had the benefit of leading early versus Houston.

Robinson’s injury could also have an unfortunate impact on any potential extension negotiations. The 24-year-old Robinson is scheduled to become a free agent next spring, and while he’s discussed a long-term deal with the Jaguars, nothing has been signed. If he’s out for the rest of the year, Robinson will hit the open market with an uncertain medical history, possibly forcing him into accepting a short-term pact.
