Jaguars Place WR Dede Westbrook On IR
The Jaguars are placing rookie wide receiver Dede Westbrook on injured reserve and releasing offensive lineman Earl Watford, according to Mike Kaye of First Coast News (Twitter link).
Westbrook, the Jaguars’ fourth-round pick in this year’s draft, had moved ahead of veteran Allen Hurns on the club’s depth chart, and had been set to open the season as Jacksonville’s slot receiver behind starters Allen Robinson and Marqise Lee. However, a “core” injury has now landed Westbrook on injured reserve, although he could return to action later this season. If the Jaguars opt to designate him as a return player, Westbrook could begin practicing in six weeks and play in eight.
Watford, meanwhile, signed a two-year, $5MM deal with the Jaguars this spring that contained $1MM in guarantees. He’d been expected to serve as depth along the offensive line, and while he’s a free agent for now, it’s entirely possible he could be re-signed after Week 1. That would enable Jacksonville to be free from guaranteeing Watford’s 2017 base salary.
Jaguars Claim DB Calvin Pryor From Browns
The Jaguars have claimed safety Calvin Pryor off waivers from the Browns, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL.com (Twitter link).
Cleveland, which originally acquired Pryor from the Jets earlier this year, waived the former first-round pick on Thursday after he reportedly go into a pre-practice fight with teammate Ricardo Louis. Now entering his age-25 season, Pryor has started 38 games during his three-year career. After grading relatively highly (top-50 safety) during his first two seasons in the NFL, Pryor declined in 2016, at least according to Pro Football Focus.
In Jacksonville, Pryor will reunite with current Jaguars executive John Idzik, who drafted Pryor as New York’s general manager in 2014. Pryor will be a clear reserve with the Jaguars, as the club has invested heavily in free agent safeties during the past two offseasons. Still, Pryor could potentially play a role as a dime safety (or even linebacker, given his playing style) alongside Barry Church and Tashaun Gipson (another former Brown).
The Jaguars will now take on Pryor’s guaranteed base salary of $1.588MM, while the Browns will clear that same total from their books.
Valentino Blake To Retire
Veteran cornerback Valentino Blake has decided to retire, according to Dan Duggan of NJ.com (Twitter link).

New York designated Blake as “left squad” at the end of last month after the veteran defensive back left the team for a personal reason. It’s still unclear as to what exactly Blake — who was formerly known by the first name “Antwon” — was dealing with, but it’s possible he was simply contemplating the end of his career.
The Giants signed the 27-year-old Blake in March, after he proved to be a durable defender for the Jaguars, Steelers and Titans over the first five seasons of his career. Blake, who has appeared in 78 of 80 regular-season games since going undrafted in 2012, logged his third straight 16-game campaign last year with the Titans, though Pro Football Focus graded his performance an underwhelming 76th among 110 qualified corners.
With Blake out of the picture, the Giants picked up extra cornerback depth on Saturday, acquiring Ross Cockrell from the Steelers in exchange for a conditional 2018 draft pick.

Rams Claim QB Brandon Allen
The Rams have claimed quarterback Brandon Allen off waivers, as Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets. Allen was cut loose by the Jaguars over the weekend.
The 2016 sixth-round pick now becomes the Rams’ third quarterback behind starter Jared Goff and backup Sean Mannion, assuming Mannion remains on board. The Rams will have to make a corresponding move to make room for Allen on the roster.
After going 4-12 last season, the Rams had top five waiver priority. It’s likely that other teams in need of quarterback depth also made a claim on Allen but were trumped by L.A. The 24-year-old made some impressive plays in the preseason, though he did throw three picks in the team’s final exhibition game.
The Rams open up their season with a home game against the Colts on Sunday.
Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC South

Jaguars Waive Brandon Allen
The Jaguars have waived quarterback Brandon Allen, Mark Long of the Associated Press tweets. Allen had been the third QB on the team’s depth chart behind starter Blake Bortles and backup Chad Henne.
The club does plan to keep Allen around, however. Per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network (via Twitter), the Jags may have waited until today to waive Allen (instead of including him in the mass cuts that took place over the past several days) to give themselves a better chance of sneaking him through waivers. If he does clear, Garafolo reports that Allen would be signed to Jacksonville’s practice squad.
There was some chatter earlier this summer that Allen, whom the Jaguars selected in the sixth round of last year’s draft, could unseat Henne as Bortles’ backup, and then when Henne had the opportunity to replace Bortles as the starter, it was rumored that Allen could serve as Henne’s backup if the club were to cut Bortles.
It is therefore clear that the Jaguars are fairly high on the former Razorback, they just wanted to use his roster spot for depth elsewhere.
Coughlin: Jaguars Never Interested In Kaepernick
When the Jaguars opened up their quarterback competition in August (only to close it again one week later), there was some speculation that Jacksonville could look into signing free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick. That speculation was fueled in part by club owner Shad Khan, who said that he would “absolutely” be okay with his team signing Kaepernick if his football people recommended him.
That never happened, and when Blake Bortles was named the starting quarterback last week, the Kaepernick-to-Jacksonville chatter, such as it was, died down. But unless Bortles flashes some hitherto unsuspected ability, the Jaguars will still have a glaring need at the quarterback position. Indeed, the club has enough talent that it could conceivably make a playoff push in a shaky AFC South if it can get consistent QB play, and some believe that Kaepernick would represent enough of an upgrade to get the Jags back to the postseason.
However, executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin has emphatically quashed the Kaepernick discussion. When asked if he ever considered Kaepernick, Coughlin said, “No, I didn’t. We did the study and the research and we weren’t interested.” When asked for his reasoning, Coughlin said, “No, I’m not explaining it. I just said what it is” (Twitter link via Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union).
Of course, this will be construed in some segments as an unenlightened decision to decline adding a player that might improve the club because that player took advantage of his freedom of expression and alienated a large portion of the NFL’s fanbase in the process. And maybe that segment would be right. But Coughlin is an intelligent football man, and as Kaepernick is a system quarterback whose salary demands and current commitment to football are largely unknown, it is fair to think that Coughlin’s decision was football-driven.
