Rams, Broncos Discussed Case Keenum Trade

Denver and Los Angeles engaged in trade talks centering on Rams quarterback Case Keenum during the preseason, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. No deal came to fruition, of course, as the Broncos ultimately didn’t come up with an offer appealing enough to convince the Rams to trade the 28-year-old (Twitter links).

The reigning champion Broncos, who open their season tonight in a Super Bowl rematch with Carolina, ended up naming second-year man Trevor Siemian their starting quarterback to replace the retired Peyton Manning. That came after Siemian beat out the since-released Mark Sanchez, now with the Cowboys, and first-round rookie Paxton Lynch for the job.

Siemian, a seventh-rounder from Northwestern, hasn’t yet attempted a regular-season pass. Keenum, on the other hand, has thrown 455 in a combined 16 games with the Texans and Rams, completing an unimpressive 56.7 percent of attempts to go with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

After a respectable six-game showing last season, the Broncos had interest in Keenum over the winter, but the Rams’ decision to tender the restricted free agent at a first-round price led Denver to look elsewhere. Despite that, Keenum hardly looked like a shoo-in for Los Angeles’ starting job after it sent a massive haul to the Titans to acquire the first pick, with which the Rams chose ex-California signal-caller Jared Goff. However, the 21-year-old didn’t show enough progress during the summer to beat out either Keenum for the starting role or Sean Mannion for the No. 2 spot, so he’ll begin the season inactive.

As the Rams wait for Goff to get up to speed, Keenum will try to do enough to remain at the helm and help them snap their 11-year playoff drought in their return to LA.

No Deadline On Jeff Fisher, Les Snead Extensions

We’ve been hearing about potential extensions for Rams coach Jeff Fisher and GM Les Snead for some time now, but as of this writing, there’s still no deal for either of them, a source tells Mike Florio of PFT. However, the source also says that there is no deadline for the talks, so deals could theoretically be struck during the season. Jeff Fisher (vertical)

The Rams haven’t had the best results on the field under Fisher and Snead. In his four years at the helm of the Rams, Fisher’s teams have compiled a 27-36-1 record and have never gone .500 or better during an individual campaign. However, after moving halfway across the country, owner Stan Kroenke reportedly wants to ensure some stability going forward.

Fisher is currently among the NFL’s highest-paid coaches at $7MM annually and it’s not clear if the Rams are willing to give him any sort of raise on that on a new deal. Prior to joining the Rams, Fisher experienced success atop the Titans organization, going 142-120 in 17 years and helping lead the club to six playoff appearances and a Super Bowl XXXIV berth to conclude the 1999-2000 season.

Rams Still Haven't Talked To Mason

  • Not only is Tre Mason not on the Rams roster, but the team has not spoken directly with the troubled quarterback in some time, as Mike Florio of PFT writes. “Tre Mason is on our Reserve/Did Not Report list, that’s where he stands,” coach Jeff Fisher told reporters this weekend. “We’ve been in communication with the family, not Tre, but with the family. The organization’s position, including the league and the [NFL] Players Association, is to take care of him and help him to get the help that he needs to get through this life crisis that he’s having.” Mason can return to the team at any time until the Tuesday after Week 10 and he will be unpaid until he does. If/when he reports, the Rams will have to decide how to handle him from a roster perspective. Of course, Mason has demons to deal with before he can even consider returning to football.

Rams To Re-Sign DT Cam Thomas

Just days after being released, veteran defensive tackle Cam Thomas has re-signed with the Rams, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). Los Angeles has waived guard David Arkin in a corresponding roster move, per Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Twitter link).Cam Thomas (Vertical)

Signed in 2014 to act as a cog in the middle of Pittsburgh’s 3-4 defense, Thomas never became a key factor in the Steel City, starting only 10 games during his time with the club. After playing on more than 40% of the Steelers’ defensive snaps in 2014, Thomas struggled to get on the field in 2015, seeing action on less than 17% of plays. A 330-pound run stuffer is never going to generate much in the way of traditional stats, but Pro Football Focus wasn’t a fan of Thomas’ work last season, assigning him below-average grades against both the pass and the run.

Nevertheless, the 29-year-old Thomas, who spent the first four years of his career with the Chargers, can still find a role as an early-down player in today’s NFL. Thomas has 85 games of experience under his belt, and he didn’t go completely unnoticed on the open market, as he took a March visit with the Seahawks. Seattle ended up re-signing its own defensive tackle free agent, Ahtyba Rubin, and Thomas languished in free agency until signing with Los Angeles in June.

Arkin, 29 next month, has spent time with the Cowboys, Colts, and Dolphins, but didn’t appear in the NFL last season. He signed a futures deal with the Rams in January.

Browns Didn’t View Wentz As Top 20 QB

This offseason, the Browns had an opportunity to stand pat with the No. 2 pick in the draft and potentially solve their quarterback situation for years to come. However, in April, the Browns struck a deal with the Eagles to add to their stockpile of picks. Everyone assumed that the Browns were not sold on Carson Wentz, but it turns out their evaluation of the North Dakota State QB was harsher than you might expect. Also, as executive Paul DePodesta hinted to Tony Grossi of ESPN.com, the Browns might have kept the pick if they thought Jared Goff would slip. Carson Wentz

“We have to make judgments on the individual players and we’re not always going to be right,” DePodesta said. “But in this particular case, we just didn’t feel it was necessarily the right bet to make for us at this time. Again, it comes down to individual evaluation of a player…Even though you have a desperate need for [a quarterback], you have to resist the temptation of taking that guy just because you have a need if you don’t believe he’s one of those 20 guys at the end of the day. I think that’s the hardest part, just maintaining your discipline because you have the need. That’s what we did this year.”

Soon enough, we’ll know whether the Browns’ signing of Robert Griffin III was a smart move. But, regardless of how RGIII does in Cleveland this year, DePodesta says the team will continue to evaluate options at quarterback. That’s probably the right approach as Griffin will be the Browns’ 25th starting quarterback since 1999.

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC West

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC West teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Cardinals, Rams, 49ers, and Seahawks are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Waiver Wire Priority For All 32 NFL Teams

Yesterday was the 53-man roster deadline, but the madness will continue today as teams pick through the waiver pile for talented discards. Priority is dictated by the reverse standings with tiebreakers where necessary, which is to say that it will be the same as the 2016 draft order before all the trades. Unlike your fantasy league’s waiver wire, a team does not go to the back of the list upon making a successful claim. That means that the league’s worst teams from 2015 have a significant advantage today as they make late roster additions.

Rams Cut Akeem Ayers, Move To 53

Ayers is perhaps the most surprising release, given that the 2015 free agent signee started 11 games for the club last season. Los Angeles will clear all $3.3MM of his cap charge by parting ways.

Rams Cut Several Players

The Rams have begun cutting players prior to Saturday’s 53-man roster deadline. Unless otherwise specified, names come courtesy of Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Here’s the list:

The longest-tenured pro of the group is Cunningham, who had been with the Rams organization since 2013. He made just three appearances with the club, though, and his only career reception came with the Colts. Notably, Seau is the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Junior Seau. Ian Seau signed with the Rams this year as an undrafted free agent from Nevada.
