Poll: Will Josh Rosen Log The Most Playing Time Of Rookie QBs in 2018?

Though teams spent high-value picks on quarterbacks in 2018, not every quarterback will be in a position to take over a starting role in 2018, though each seemingly has a decent possibility at finding the field in their rookie year. Along with the Browns selecting Mayfield, the Jets selected Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick, the Bills took Josh Allen with the No. 7 overall pick, the Cardinals took Josh Rosen with the No. 10 overall pick and the Ravens selected Lamar Jackson with the No. 32 overall pick. The Steelers also selected Mason Rudolph in the third round of the draft.

Each quarterback has a roadblock to finding playing time in 2018. The Browns acquired quarterback Tyrod Taylor via trade, the Jets re-signed Josh McCown and added Teddy Bridgewater, the Cardinals signed Sam Bradford and the Bills traded for A.J. McCarron. The Steelers have Ben Roethlisberger entrenched in the starting role, though he’s missed eight games over the last three seasons.

Veteran WR Greg Little In For Rookie Minicamp

  • Former Browns receiver Greg Little appeared at the Cardinals rookie minicamp, Kyle Odegard of azcardinals.com writes. Little, who hasn’t played a game since the 2014 season, was a promising second-round pick who flamed out after three seasons. The Cardinals offered the 28-year-old wideout a tryout this weekend and impressed new head coach Steve Wilks.

Josh Rosen Signs Cardinals Deal

A second first-round pick signed his rookie deal on Thursday. The Cardinals reached an agreement with quarterback Josh Rosen, the team announced, on the eve of Arizona’s rookie minicamp.

Rosen follows Redskins defensive lineman Da’Ron Payne in agreeing to terms with his team. Rosen signed the customary four-year rookie accord, one that contains a 2022 option year.

The Cardinals have been looking for a bit now for their next franchise quarterback, and Rosen will be expected to give Sam Bradford a strong push for the job this season. The UCLA product was viewed by most as this class’ most polished passer and one that will need the shortest acclimation process before seeing game action.

Interestingly, Rosen follows Patrick Mahomes as the No. 10 pick. The Cardinals were rumored to be interested in trading up for Mahomes, but they’ll now being paying their quarterback a salary customary for that draft slot. Mahomes’ Chiefs deal was worth $16.425MM over four years, so Rosen’s pact will come in north of that ($17.6MM with a $10.9MM signing bonus, per Joel Corry of CBS Sports, Twitter link) but south of 2018 peers Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold and Josh Allen.

However, with the likes of Larry Fitzgerald, David Johnson and now Christian Kirk in place with the Cardinals, Rosen could be best-positioned to make an impact as a rookie.

Cardinals To Sign FB Derrick Coleman

Derrick Coleman agreed to a one-year deal with the Cardinals, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The deal puts the veteran in line to be Arizona’s new starting fullback.

Coleman, 28 in October, appeared in all 16 of the Falcons’ regular season games in 2017. He is regarded as one of the best at his position, but his market was slow to develop this offseason as most teams do not utilize a fullback in their offense. Known mostly for his blocking ability, Coleman has just three catches in his last two NFL seasons and 13 grabs across four active years in the league.

Coleman made headlines for the wrong reasons during his Seahawks tenure. An alleged hit-and-run incident in 2015 kept him out of football in 2016, but he avoided jail by agreeing community service plus 12 months of community supervision.

Coleman joins a roster that already has several fringe running backs competing for work. Beyond starter David Johnson, Elijhaa Penny, and fourth-round rookie Chase Edmunds, D.J. Foster, T.J. Logan, and Bronson Hill are fighting to make the final cut.

Kurt Warner Considered NFL Comeback

Plenty of NFL players have retired and un-retired, but Kurt Warner considered doing something unprecedented. The Hall of Fame quarterback pondered a return for this season as he nears his 47th birthday (video link via Patrick Daugherty of NBC Sports).

I was actually ready to, for this coming season, I actually talked to a coach and my wife said, ‘Go for it, I think it would be great,‘” Warner said during a St. Louis Cardinals telecast. “So I actually talked to a coach about possibly doing it if they needed someone, but then they went out and signed somebody. I don’t think they thought I was serious. So I think we’re completely done now.”

Warner, a former Super Bowl champion and MVP, last took the field in the 2009 season with the Cardinals. He left the game on a high note after leading Arizona to a victory in the opening round of the playoffs, but he has also been out of action for nearly a decade. It’s not clear if any team would have given real consideration to signing Warner, but it sounds like he was fairly serious about the idea on his end.

Running back Herschel Walker famously claimed that he could still play in the NFL when he was in his 50s. He never did make his way back to the gridiron, but he did compete as a professional mixed martial artist in the now defunct Strikeforce promotion.

It’s unlikely that Warner would have garnered real consideration for his planned return, but it’s a fun what-if scenario to ponder.

Cardinals Cut Two QBs

The Cardinals have trimmed two quarterbacks from the roster. Signal callers Brandon Doughty and Alek Torgersen were handed their pink slips on Monday afternoon, the team announced.

Arizona claimed Doughty and Torgersen off waivers April 5 when they were cut by the Dolphins and Lions, respectively. The It appears the team likes what it has seen from Princeton quarterback Chad Kanoff – a UDFA signing – leading to the release of both players after just one month on the roster.

After the selection of Josh Rosen in April, it seemed very unlikely that either Doughty or Torgersen would make the final cut. The Cardinals plan to start Sam Bradford in Week 1 with Rosen and Mike Glennon in support, giving them the standard three QBs. Kanoff is now positioned to serve as a camp arm for Arizona and appears more likely to be a practice squad signee than a main roster addition.

Torgersen played his college football at Penn before hooking on with the Falcons as a UDFA in 2017. He missed the final cut and hooked on with the Redskins’ taxi squad before finishing out the year in Detroit.

Doughty, a seventh-round pick of Miami in 2016, re-upped with the team on a reserve/futures deal in January before he was cut by the Fins this year. In his final year at Western Kentucky, Doughty completed 71.9% of his passes for 5,055 yards with 48 touchdowns against just nine interceptions.

Texans Hire Jets Exec As Player Personnel Director

After firing several members of their scouting department earlier this week, the Texans are quickly assembling their new-look scouting branch.

The franchise will bring aboard Matt Bazirgan from the Jets, and Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports he will serve as the Texans’ director of player personnel. The Jets granted Bazirgan permission to speak with the Texans.

Bazirgan joins former Patriots exec James Liipfert as new Texans hires, with the latter now in place as Houston’s director of college scouting. The Texans will also bring aboard former Cardinals scout John Ritcher, Wilson reports. Ritcher will become Houston’s southeast regional scout, per Wilson, after spending six years with the Cards.

Bazirgan, who looks set to assume some of former interim GM and VP of player personnel Jimmy Raye III‘s responsibilities, served as the Jets’ director of pro personnel for the past three years. Wilson adds Bazirgan has a strong reputation as a talent evaluator in NFL circles. He spent 14 years with the Jets.
