GMs Expecting Active Trade Deadline
The NFL has experienced a dramatic rise in significant trades over the past several years, and there may be a few noteworthy swaps going down this month as we get closer to the October 29 trade deadline. Indeed, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports says there is a sense among general managers that we may see more trades in advance of this year’s deadline than ever before, largely because there is a larger gulf between pretenders and contenders than in seasons past (indeed, there are still six winless teams, which is the highest number at this point in the season since the 1970 merger).
La Canfora says the teams most actively laying groundwork for potential deals are the Saints, Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs, Patriots, and Seahawks. Of course, a number of those clubs have already been pursuing Jacksonville CB Jalen Ramsey, and the Saints, Eagles, Ravens, and Chiefs are casting a wide net for cornerback upgrades.
One of this year’s still-winless clubs, the Broncos, are reportedly more open to moving veteran pieces than they were last year, as La Canfora writes in a separate piece, with Derek Wolfe, Chris Harris, and Emmanuel Sanders all generating interest. Wolfe could make sense for Baltimore, and the Saints are expected to renew their pursuit of Sanders. Even Von Miller could be on the block, per La Canfora, especially since all of his major bonuses and guarantees have already been paid. Miller, 30, is reportedly open to a change of scenery at this point, but Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network says the Broncos will not trade him (video link). However, the other players mentioned above could be available if Denver continues to scuffle.
But while Denver may be willing to talk shop, rival GMs are skeptical that the 0-4 Bengals, led by old-school owner Mike Brown, will be amenable to moving big-name vets despite their fading fortunes. La Canfora’s sources say Cincinnati could net a first-round pick for WR A.J. Green if the acquiring club is able to work out a new contract with him as a condition of the trade (and if Green recovers from his foot injury soon). The Patriots and Saints could make a push for Green or Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert, and Cincy could also swing deals for players like Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap if the club is willing to listen to offers.
Like fellow winless outfits Denver and Cincinnati, the Jets could be active in shopping veteran players in advance of the deadline. La Canfora specifically names Kelechi Osemele and Leonard Williams as players who could be on the move, though he says there has been no trade chatter surrounding Le’Veon Bell at this point.
Finally, though the 0-4 Redskins have been steadfastly refusing to trade Trent Williams, some believe that the team will relent at some point and will ship Williams to a contender in need of O-line help.

Seahawks Retain WR Gary Jennings, Cut DL Bryan Mone
It turns out the Seahawks haven’t given up on rookie fourth-round pick Gary Jennings. The wideout was in Seattle’s locker room Thursday, with Field Yates of ESPN.com noting (via Twitter) the team will instead waive defensive lineman Bryan Mone to make room for safety Adrian Colbert‘s promotion.
A Wednesday report indicated Jennings was the player set for the waiver wire to make room for Colbert, a former 49ers starting safety. For the time being, the Seahawks will keep their three-rookie-wideout setup going. The Seahawks submitted a notice Jennings would be waived but rescinded it, per the Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta (on Twitter).
Seattle drafted D.K. Metcalf, Jennings and John Ursua this year. Only Metcalf has made a catch as a rookie, but he and Ursua — a seventh-rounder out of Hawaii — have played in games. Jennings has yet to be active. The West Virginia product missed time during Seattle’s offseason program with a hamstring injury and had a quiet training camp.
Dickson's Recovery Delayed
- It appears Seahawks tight end Ed Dickson‘s recovery isn’t going as planned. Pete Carroll is “concerned” Dickson won’t be ready to come off injured reserve when first eligible, according to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times (Twitter link). When Dickson first had knee surgery back in early August, Carroll said the team was hoping he’d be out 4-5 weeks. That would’ve put him on track for an early September return, but now he apparently might not be ready for the Week 9 game in early November. Seattle is notoriously overly-optimistic about injuries, but that’s unusual even by their standards. The veteran’s first year with the Seahawks was last season, where he was mostly used as a blocker. Seattle just traded away Nick Vannett, and it looks like Will Dissly will be their only real option at tight end for the foreseeable future.

Seahawks Waive WR Gary Jennings
The Seahawks have waived wide receiver Gary Jennings, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports (via Twitter). The move is notable because Jennings was a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft.
Jennings, a West Virginia product, missed time during the offseason program with a hamstring injury and had a quiet training camp. Plus, as Brady Henderson of ESPN.com notes, Jennings had difficulty picking up Seattle’s playbook. He posted just one catch for 12 yards during the preseason and has been a healthy scratch for all three of the team’s regular season contests.
Jennings was one of three receivers the Seahawks drafted this year. Second-round choice D.K. Metcalf has shown off his big-play ability during his first taste of professional action, and seventh-rounder John Ursua remains on the roster.
During his junior year with the Mountaineers, Jennings topped the 1,000-yard mark, and he nearly did it again in his senior season. It’s possible that a receiver-needy team will put in a claim, but if not, the Seahawks could theoretically re-sign him to the taxi squad.
In a related move, Seattle has promoted safety Adrian Colbert from the p-squad and signed LB Malik Carney to the practice squad to replace Colbert.
Seahawks To Sign Luke Willson
Luke Willson is heading back to Seattle. The Seahawks have agreed to reunite with their former tight end, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

Willson spent the first five years of his career with the Seahawks before moving on to the Lions in 2018. in Detorit, he saw time in 14 games and notched 13 catches for 87 yards. Then, in March, he hooked on with the Raiders, but was unable to make their final cut to a 53-man roster. After working out for the Saints and Cardinals this month, Willson is going back to where it all started.
Willson takes the place of tight end Nick Vannett, who was traded to the Steelers on Tuesday night in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round choice. With Willson back in the fold, the Seahawks now a second tight end on the active roster to support starter Will Dissly.
The Seahawks will look to advance to 3-1 in Week 4 as they take on the Cardinals in Arizona.
