Cowboys Sign Ryan Davis

After working out 14 players on Tuesday, the Cowboys have emerged with a defensive end. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweets that the team has signed Ryan Davis. Ryan DavisESPN.com’s Todd Archer notes that the veteran had tried out for the team earlier this afternoon.

Davis, an undrafted rookie back in 2012, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Jaguars. While the former Bethune-Cookman standout never started a game, he still managed to produce some impressive numbers during his tenure in Jacksonville. Over the past three seasons, Davis has 11 sacks, including 6.5 during the 2014 season. The 27-year-old was released by the Jaguars earlier this month.

With the ability to play both linebacker and defensive end, Davis should surely carve out a role on this squad. Plus, as Archer points out, Davis’ 11 career sacks are the most on the entire roster, topping Orlando Scandrick‘s 10.5 sacks. Davis will presumably compete with Charles Tapper and Jack Crawford for snaps on the defensive line, and he’ll go against Keith Smith, Mark Nzeocha, Andrew Gachkar, Justin Durant, and Damien Wilson for action at linebacker.

Cowboys Waive Dax Swanson

  • The Cowboys announced that they’ve waived cornerback Dax Swanson, who signed with the club in June.

Cowboys’ Randy Gregory Exits Rehab

Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory is now out of rehab and has been removed from the club’s reserve/did not report list, a source tells Field Yates of ESPN.com (Twitter links). However, Gregory still has three more games left on his original four-game suspension, and is still facing a 10-game ban that will enter the appeals process at some point in the future, according to Yates.Randy Gregory (Vertical)

Gregory, 24 in November, didn’t see a ton of action during his first NFL season — he was slowed by an early-season ankle sprain and ended up recording 11 tackles over the course of 250 defensive snaps. Viewed as a surefire first-round pick – and a potential top-10 selection – based on talent, Gregory slipped in last year’s draft to 60th overall, where he was snatched up by the Cowboys. Off-field concerns, including a failed drug test at the combine, contributed to his slide.

“It’s disappointing, but at the same time, sometimes these things don’t get fixed overnight,” Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said in February of Gregory’s four-game suspension. “Anybody who has ever been involved in this type of situation knows that sometimes it takes time. We’re there, but he’s going to have to buckle down, which he is. He’s working hard at it, but he’s got to get over the hump here.

You have to be concerned. That’s the risk you get when you go there. It’s all about that risk-reward deal, but at the end of the day, we got the infrastructure in place to continue to help him. We think he’s utilizing it, but at the same time, it’s disappointing that we had this go far enough that it resulted in a suspension.”

Romo On Track To Return Week 7, But Prescott Could Remain Starter

  • There is good news for Cowboys fans on the Tony Romo front, as La Canfora reports that Romo is making good progress from the fractured vertebrae he suffered in his back during the team’s third preseason game, and he is on track to play in Week 7. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (article via Kevin Patra of NFL.com) suggests that even if Romo is ready to go, he may not have a job to come back to. After speaking with team sources, Rapoport reports that the door is open, albeit slightly, for rookie Dak Prescott to impress enough to pull a Lou Gehrig and take Romo’s job on a permanent basis.

Cowboys Restructure Jason Witten’s Contract

The Cowboys have restructured Jason Witten‘s yet again in order to give themselves additional cap space. The Cowboys converted $5.5MM of Witten’s $6.5MM base salary into a signing bonus, as ESPN.com’s Todd Archer writes. Thanks to the reworked deal, the Cowboys will save $2.75MM in cap room. Witten, 34, is the third player to have his contract restructured after Orlando Scandrick and Sean Lee both agreed to move some money around. The Cowboys also restructured the deals of left tackle Tyron Smith and defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford earlier this offseason. Witten is signed through 2017 and is set to make $7.4MM next season with a cap figure of $12.262MM.

Witten has not missed a regular season game for the Cowboys since 2003, his rookie year. Last season, in yet another 16-game showing, Witten hauled in 77 passes for 713 yards and three touchdowns. Since becoming a full-time starter in Dallas, Witten has averaged 82 catches and 906 yards with five touchdowns per season.

Latest On Ezekiel Elliott

The Columbus, Ohio district attorney’s office is not pursuing charges against Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott in relation to domestic assault charges levied earlier this year, tweets Ed Werder of ESPN.com. However, the NFL is continuing to investigate Elliott, and the fourth overall selection in this year’s draft could now be dealing with yet another off-the-field concern.Ezekiel Elliott (Vertical)

In court documents unearthed by Drew Davison of the Star-Telegram, Elliott and his ex-girlfriend Tiffany Thompson have a text conversation about an upcoming drug test that the Dallas rookie was scheduled to take. Thompson told Elliott, “I know you’re stressed out, if you need me call me. Just do everything you can to pass your drug test tomorrow. You’ll be okay. I’m here for you.” Elliot’s response: “I’m gonna pass…About to live in this sauna the next 24 hours.”

Of course, such an exchange proves no nefarious behavior on the part of Elliott, but as Davison points out, the conversation, when taken in tandem with Elliott’s visit to a Seattle marijuana shop last month, could mean the rookie running back is headed for the NFL’s substance abuse program. The program doesn’t require a failed test for entry — “behavior which…exhibits physical, behavioral, or psychological signs or symptoms of misuse of Substances of Abuse” is enough, according to the league’s policy.

“Well, I think that, in and of itself, the reason we are talking about it is in a way part of the learning process,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said of Elliot’s journey last month. “But it’s not good. It’s just not good. It’s just not good.”
