Rams To Trade P Corey Bojorquez To Packers
The Rams have made their decision at punter, and it appears All-Pro Johnny Hekker will keep his job. The team found a taker for its other punter as well.
The Packers will acquire Corey Bojorquez from the Rams, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. With the Bills over the past three years, Bojorquez will catch on with another contender this season.
Bojorquez landed in Los Angeles and pushed Hekker, whose roster spot was in jeopardy because of his near-$5MM cap hold. But the four-time first-team All-Pro will go into his 10th season as the Rams’ punter.
This trade stands to install Bojorquez atop Green Bay’s punting hierarchy, shoving aside incumbent J.K. Scott. The former UDFA has been the Packers’ punter for the past three years. Bojorquez’s 50.8 yards per punt, however, led the NFL last season and was more than five yards better than Scott’s average boot.
Packers To Waive WR Equanimeous St. Brown
The Packers made some notable additions at wide receiver this offseason, and a second notable holdover did not make the cut. Green Bay will waive Equanimeous St. Brown, per Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter).
A 2018 sixth-round pick, St. Brown has battled injuries as a pro but served as one of Aaron Rodgers‘ auxiliary options at points during the 2018 and ’20 seasons. This move follows the Pack’s decision to reach an injury settlement with Devin Funchess, removing him from the team’s 2021 equation.
Green Bay used a third-round pick on Amari Rodgers and then, at Rodgers’ request, reacquired Randall Cobb via trade. These two will work with Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Allen Lazard on a suddenly deep Packers receiving corps.
St. Brown missed all of the 2019 season due to injury but returned to play in 12 games last year. For his career, production has been largely elusive. The Notre Dame product and elder of the NFL’s two St. Browns has just 28 receptions for 445 yards and a touchdown as a pro.
David Bakhtiari To Begin Season On PUP List
The Packers will begin their season without David Bakhtiari. The All-Pro left tackle will be transferred to the reserve/PUP list, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.
Moving Bakhtiari from the active/PUP list to the reserve/PUP list will shelve the decorated blocker for at least the season’s first six games. Bakhtiari suffered a torn ACL during a practice on New Year’s Eve and has been working his way back.
Bakhtiari, who will turn 30 during his stay on the PUP list, has been Green Bay’s starting left tackle since his 2013 rookie season. He has become one of the NFL’s best tackles, earning first-team All-Pro acclaim in two of the past three years. His absence was noticeable in the NFC championship game, with Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaquil Barrett getting the better of Green Bay’s tackles.
Standout interior lineman Elgton Jenkins lined up inside in that game but has slid to left tackle in Bakhtiari’s absence, giving Green Bay an interesting option. Jenkins has played both guard and center in his first two seasons, becoming an instant starter and impact player for the Packers, and will now be on track to work on the O-line’s highest-profile position to start the season. The Pack also roster Billy Turner and former Titans tackle Dennis Kelly, providing options while Bakhtiari finishes out his recovery.
Packers Release Devin Funchess
The Packers have released Devin Funchess with an injury settlement, per the league’s transactions wire. Between this and last year’s opt-out, Funchess’ Packers run will end without having ever played a game for Green Bay.
This was the expected move after the Packers placed Funchess on IR earlier this week. Funchess has not played since his 2019 stint with the Colts, which was really more like a cup of coffee. That season ended midway through the season opener thanks to a broken collarbone. Funchess earned $10MM in salary that year — this time, he’ll leave with a portion of his one-year, $1.2MM contract.
The Panthers selected Funchess in the second round of the 2015 draft, but he has yet to put it all together in the pros. He enjoyed the best year of his career in 2017, compiling 63 receptions for 840 yards and eight touchdowns. Still, it’s worth noting that it took him 111 targets to get those 63 grabs.
With Funchess out of the picture, the Packers will move forward with Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, and Randall Cobb as their top WRs.

Packers Place Devin Funchess On IR
It does not look like Devin Funchess‘ Packers career will end up leading to any regular-season games. For the second straight year, the veteran wide receiver will not play for Green Bay.
The Packers placed Funchess on IR Wednesday. This move will end his season. While an injury settlement would allow Funchess to catch on with another team and play in 2021, Wednesday’s transaction will prevent him from suiting up for the Packers this year.
Funchess has not played since Week 1 of the 2019 season. An injury landed him on the Colts’ IR list that year. He then opted out of the 2020 season. The former Panthers draftee was set vying for a role in a now-crowded Packers receiving corps but suffered an injury during a Packers-Jets joint practice last week. Funchess did play in Green Bay’s preseason opener, showing some promise with a six-catch, 70-yard outing. It will be interesting to see if he lands elsewhere later this year.
The 27-year-old wideout signed a one-year, $2.5MM deal with the Packers in 2020. That deal tolled to 2021 after Funchess’ opt-out. That contract represented the highest-profile receiver move of the Packers’ scrutinized 2020 offseason, which brought Jordan Love to town but no other wideouts of note. A year later, however, young pass catchers Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling have more experience and are set to reprise their supporting-cast roles. The Packers also traded for Randall Cobb and drafted Clemson’s Amari Rodgers in Round 3. Funchess accepted a pay cut earlier this offseason.
A former second-round pick, Funchess broke out during Carolina’s 2017 playoff season. The 6-foot-4 receiver caught 63 passes for 840 yards and eight touchdowns. Beyond that year, however, the Michigan product has not surpassed 550 yards in a season. While the Colts and Packers gave him one-year contracts, Funchess has seen his career stall since leaving the Panthers.
Additionally, the Packers signed defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson and cornerback Stephen Denmark. They waived wide receiver Chris Blair as well.

AFC East Rumors: Patriots, Jets, Phillips
The Patriots‘ quarterback battle will tilt toward Mac Jones this week, by default. Cam Newton will not be permitted to practice with the team until Thursday. A COVID-19 issue will force the veteran quarterback to work virtually, according to the Patriots, who have called this a misunderstanding that stemmed from Newton traveling to a team-approved medical appointment outside Foxborough. Newton has not tested positive for the coronavirus, per the team, but an issue with his testing cadence caused this hiccup. Like Kirk Cousins and Lamar Jackson this month, Newton’s unvaccinated status has complicated matters for his team. Only unvaccinated players are tested daily; vaccinated players also are exempt from five-day isolation periods. One of the practices Newton will miss will be a joint workout with the Giants.
Until Monday, Jones had lined up with the Pats’ second-team offense, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com notes. This week certainly represents an opportunity for the first-round pick to gain ground. Both Newton and Jones played well in New England’s second preseason game, and OC Josh McDaniels said the 32-year-old incumbent remains the starter. The Pats have not named a Week 1 starter, however. Here is the latest from the AFC East:
- Rather than give Jamal Adams a top-market contract, the Jets moved on via a blockbuster trade. It turns out, they were involved in a similar negotiation barely a year ago. Adams wanted to be the Jets’ highest-paid player and sought the $17.5MM-per-year figure — which would have surpassed C.J. Mosley‘s $17MM AAV — that he ended up getting from the Seahawks, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com notes. With the Broncos having yet to move Justin Simmons past the $15MM-AAV barrier, Adams’ ask was even farther beyond the safety salary range in 2020. Adams landing his Seattle extension last week, however, stands to benefit Marcus Maye in 2022. The Jets and Maye were not close on terms at July’s franchise tag deadline, pushing Adams’ former sidekick toward free agency next year.
- Morgan Moses has not locked up the Jets’ right tackle job just yet, with Cimini adding that incumbent George Fant has pushed the longtime Washington starter. Fant has split first-team reps with Moses, with the team listing each as a starter on its depth chart. Fant started 14 Jets games at right tackle last year; Moses started every Washington game for the past six years at the position. Despite Moses’ superior resume, Fant is attached to a $9.1MM-per-year deal while Moses signed a one-year, $3.6MM pact after his Washington release. This is an interesting issue for the Jets to have, given their struggles up front over the past few years.
- Bills defensive tackle Harrison Phillips seems to have both avoided a serious injury and run into a potentially problematic issue. The fourth-year D-lineman left Buffalo’s second preseason game with an injury NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport classified as not serious (Twitter link). Sean McDermott, however, said the injury is to the same knee that required ACL surgery in 2019. It does not look like Phillips is in danger of missing too much time, per McDermott, but this will be an issue for the Bills to monitor ahead of the rotational lineman’s contract year.
- The Patriots attempted to interview Packers executive Chad Brinker this offseason, but Albert Breer of SI.com notes Green Bay blocked the move. The Pats wanted to meet with Brinker about a job helping manage their salary cap. Brinker would have rejoined ex-Packers exec Eliot Wolf in New England. Instead, the Packers promoted him.

Packers To Trade Ka’dar Hollman To Texans
New Texans GM Nick Caserio continues to wheel and deal. Houston has agreed to a trade to acquire cornerback Ka’dar Hollman from the Packers, a source told veteran NFL reporter Aaron Wilson (Twitter link). The Texans will send back a 2022 seventh-round pick via the Bears for Hollman, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets.
Caserio has made several trades recently, and this isn’t even his first one with Green Bay. The two teams recently worked out a deal for receiver Randall Cobb, at the behest of Aaron Rodgers. Caserio just traded corner Keion Crossen to the Giants last week, so Hollman can essentially be seen as a replacement in the secondary.
The Packers drafted Hollman in the sixth-round out of Toledo in 2019. He barely saw the field as a rookie, but took on a real role this past season. He appeared in 14 games for Green Bay, and even started one.
Hollman ended up playing a bit over 10 percent of the defensive snaps, finishing with 10 tackles and three passes defended. He was also a contributor on special teams, and is a bit on the older side for a third-year pro as he’ll turn 27 next month. Caserio is certainly being aggressive if nothing else as he continues to completely remake Houston’s roster.
