Browns Cut Daryl Richardson, De’Ante Saunders

The Browns have made a pair of changes to their 53-man roster, releasing running back Daryl Richardson from the squad and promoting linebacker Cam Johnson to fill the newly-created opening, according to a team release.

In addition to cutting Richardson and elevating Johnson to the active roster, the Browns have also waived defensive back De’Ante Saunders from their practice squad. Saunders was arrested last week along with Cleveland linebacker Armonty Bryant, and has pleaded not guilty after being charged with suspicion of drunken driving, writes Evan MacDonald of Cleveland.com.

Saunders may eventually face discipline from the NFL if the league determines he violated the personal conduct policy, but if he does have to serve a suspension, it seems it won’t be with the Browns. As for Richardson, he signed with Cleveland earlier this month, but didn’t see the field during his brief stint with the team — he was inactive for the two games he was on the 53-man roster, and will now return to waivers.

Browns Sign Daryl Richardson; Hartline To IR

The Browns have made a pair of roster moves, announcing today in a press release that they’ve signed running back Daryl Richardson, placing wide receiver Brian Hartline on the injured reserve list in a corresponding move. Hartline’s 2015 season is now officially over.

Since being cut by the Jets prior to the regular season, Richardson has spent some time on the Texans’ practice squad, and has had workouts for the Steelers, Patriots, and Raiders. The 25-year-old broke into the league with the Rams in 2012 and had a promising rookie season, racking up 475 rushing yards on 98 attempts, and adding another 163 yards on 24 receptions. He struggled in his second year, however, and hasn’t had a regular-season touch since 2013.

By signing with the Browns, Richardson will join a backfield that is coming off an extremely productive game on Sunday — both Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson picked up big chunks of yardage against San Francisco, so it seems unlikely that Richardson will step into a major role in the offense.

As for Hartline, the veteran wideout suffered a broken collarbone during Sunday’s win over the 49ers. According to the Browns, he underwent successful surgery today. The local product, who played his college ball att Ohio State, finished his first season in Cleveland with 46 catches, 523 yards, and a pair of touchdowns.

Workout Notes: Steelers, Broncos, Bears

The Steelers, who have been leaning heavily on DeAngelo Williams since Le’Veon Bell went down for the year, worked out former Rams and Jets running back Daryl Richardson, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post (Twitter link). It doesn’t appear Pittsburgh will sign Richardson at this point, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the free agent market, considering Jordan Todman and Fitzgerald Toussaint – Williams’ current backups – have combined for just four carries this season.

Here are more workout notes from Wilson:

  • The Broncos had a huge group of players in for tryouts this week, and Wilson (Twitter links) has the full list:
    • FB Ray Agnew
    • TE Brandon Barden
    • DT Alex Bienemann
    • TE Cameron Clear
    • WR Jace Davis
    • WR Antwan Goodley
    • WR R.J. Harris
    • C Alex Hill
    • T Cameron Jefferson
    • WR Jordan Leslie
    • QB Seth Lobato
    • WR Levi Norwood
    • QB Bryn Renner
    • T Jack Rummells
    • WR Demetrius Wilson
  • Tight end Rob Housler was part of the Bears‘ latest workout group, which also featured tight end Nick Kasa and wide receiver Marcus Lucas, according to Wilson (Twitter link). Chicago’s starting tight end, Martellus Bennett, is expected to return to action this weekend, so I wouldn’t expect the team to add another player at the position.
  • The Cardinals auditioned linebackers Josh Francis, Quayshawn Nealy, Markus Pierce-Brewster, and Mike Reilly, along with cornerback Jalil Brown, tweets Wilson.
  • In addition to working out offensive tackle Pierce Burton, who signed to the team’s practice squad, the Colts also took a look at defensive end Nordly Capi and defensive back Terrance Mitchell, says Wilson (via Twitter).
  • The Raiders tried out safety Dewey McDonald, tweets Wilson. McDonald was signed by the Patriots last week, but only lasted two days on New England’s roster.
