Workout Notes: Bills, Dolphins, Raiders, Bucs
With 53-man rosters set, teams around the NFL will start to frequently bring in players for workouts and auditions, keeping up-to-date on which free agents are out there, in case injury replacements or practice squad fill-ins are required.
Here are a few of the latest updates on teams working out players, or bringing them in for visits:
- The Bills, who are exploring other possible options at kicker after an underwhelming preseason from Dan Carpenter, worked out Alex Henery, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post (via Twitter). Henery’s last game in the NFL, the one that cost him his job, came last October, when he missed three field goals for the Lions against Buffalo.
- Before they signed linebacker Adrian Hubbard, the Dolphins worked out Hubbard and several other players, according to Wilson (Twitter link). The players who earned an audition with Miami included former Raiders safety Jonathan Dowling, ex-Cardinals linebacker Glenn Carson, former Bengals linebacker Nico Johnson, ex-Cowboys cornerback Robert Steeples, and former Eagles safety Chris Prosinski.
- The Raiders brought in a number of players for workouts, with a focus on wide receivers, quarterbacks, and defensive backs. According to Wilson (Twitter links), wideouts Phil Bates, John Harris, DeAndre Carter, and T.J. Graham, quarterbacks Jeff Tuel and Phillip Sims, and defensive backs Tommie Campbell, Phillip Thomas, B.W. Webb, and Ty Zimmerman auditioned for the club. Offensive lineman Dillon Farrell also had a tryout with Oakland.
- Offensive lineman Austin Reiter, a 2015 seventh-rounder waived by Washington over the weekend, is working out for the Buccaneers this morning, tweets Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.
- After being waived by the Chargers last week, wide receiver Titus Davis paid a visit to the Lions, tweets Wilson.
Jaguars Cut 10 Players
The Jaguars are wasting no time in paring their roster to 75 players ahead of Tuesday’s first cutdown day, cutting 10.
Among them were wideout Tandon Doss and quarterback Jeff Tuel.
Once regarded as the favorite to return punts for the Jags this season, Doss lost out on the job to rookie Rashad Greene. Tuel, who played under current Jags assistant Doug Marrone in Buffalo, started a game for the Bills in 2013 but hasn’t played in a game since. Tuel’s waiving leaves Stephen Morris as the team’s No. 3 quarterback, should the team keep three and a practice squad candidate if not.
Safety Desmond Cooper, tight end Connor Hamlett, punter/kicker Kasey Redfern, defensive end Camaron Beard, defensive tackle Eric Crume, offensive lineman Jack Rummels, along with linebackers Khairi Fortt and Mister Alexander, joined the higher-profile performers on the chopping block.
Teams have until 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday to mince their rosters to 75.
Minor Moves: Monday
Today’s minor moves..
- The Chargers announced that they have signed cornerback Lowell Rose and waived offensive tackle Cameron Clemmons. Rose was in training camp with the Chargers last year, appearing in three preseason games. The Tulsa product later signed with the Dolphins and played in five games.
- The Jaguars claimed quarterback Jeff Tuel off waivers from the Bills while releasing quarterback Jake Waters, according to John Oehser of Jaguars.com (via Twitter).
- The Colts announced that they have signed free agent wide receiver Tyler Rutenbeck. Rutenbeck, 6-2, 186 pounds, was originally signed by Washington after going undrafted out of Division-III Dubuque but lasted less than two weeks there. In four years of college he recorded 163 receptions for 2,715 yards and a school-record 42 receiving touchdowns.
- The Seahawks are waiving rookie defensive tackle Tory Slater today, a source tells Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post (on Twitter).
- Washington has signed nose tackle Jerrell Powe, according to Wilson (on Twitter). Powe wasn’t tendered an offer as a restricted free agent of the Texans.
- The Jets signed UGA wide receiver Jonathon Rumph, according to Wilson (on Twitter). Rumph had 11 catches for 176 yards and a touchdown for Georgia last year but sidelined most of the year due to injury.
- The 49ers cut Chase Thomas from the NFI list, Wilson tweets.
Bills Claim Matt Simms Off Waivers
The Bills have been awarded quarterback Matt Simms after placing a waiver claim on the former Jet, per Howard Balzer of TheSportsXchange (Twitter link). According to Balzer, Buffalo cut signal-caller Jeff Tuel to create room on the roster for Simms.
Simms, 26, spent the last two seasons with the Jets, appearing in four games and completing 19 of 39 passes during his limited playing time, with a touchdown and an interception. However, New York’s roster this spring featured a more crowded quarterback depth chart, which included Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, and Bryce Petty. Simms reportedly asked the Jets for his release, and the team obliged yesterday.
By joining the Bills, Simms reunites with former head coach Rex Ryan, though he joins another deep group of quarterbacks. While Buffalo certainly doesn’t have a star QB, or even a clear-cut starter, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor, and E.J. Manuel are all considered likely to make the club’s regular season roster.
Bills Sign 10 To Reserve/Futures Contracts
Today is the first day that teams can begin signing players who didn’t finish the regular season on an NFL roster to reserve/futures contracts for the 2015 season, and the Bills have locked up 10 such players, according to a team release.
Here’s the full list of the players to ink futures deals with the team. Of these 10 players, all but one finished the year on the Bills’ practice squad:
- Deon Broomfield, S
- William Campbell, G
- Jimmy Gaines, LB
- Caleb Holley, WR
- Bryan Johnson, DE
- D.J. Morrell, G
- Tobais Palmer, WR
- Rod Sweeting, CB
- Jeremy Towns, DT
- Jeff Tuel, QB
Defensive end Ike Igbinosun was the only player to finish the season on Buffalo’s taxi squad and not receive a futures contract from the team. Meanwhile, Holley was the only one to sign a deal after not being on the practice squad, though he spent time earlier in the season on the unit before being placed on the injured list.

Sunday/Monday Transactions: AFC East
Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC East teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions are noted below.
Additionally, as of 11:00am CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. For the 2014 and 2015 seasons, changes were made to practice squad rules that allow teams to carry eight players instead of 10, and the eligibility requirements for those extra two spots were also loosened. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.
