Cowboys Cut A.J. Jenkins, Down To 53 Players
The Cowboys have announced their Saturday roster moves, paring down from 75 players to 53 in preparation for the regular season. One of the players waived today by the Cowboys was former first-round wideout A.J. Jenkins, who signed with the team earlier in the offseason. With failed stops in San Francisco, Kansas City, and Dallas now under his belt, Jenkins’ NFL opportunities are likely running out.
Here are the players removed from Dallas’ active roster today, per a team release:
Waived:
- QB Dustin Vaughan
- QB Jameill Showers
- RB Gus Johnson
- RB Ben Malena
- FB Ray Agnew
- WR Clyde Gates
- WR Nick Harwell
- WR A.J. Jenkins
- T Laurence Gibson
- T John Wetzel
- C Shane McDermott
- C Ronald Patrick
- DE Ben Gardner
- DE Efe Obada
- LB Donnie Baggs
- LB Dakorey Johnson
- CB Joel Ross
- S Tim Scott
Waived/injured:
- LB Ka’Lial Glaud
- CB Rod Sweeting
Reserve/suspended:

- LB Rolando McClain
Meanwhile, Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram weighs in on rumors from earlier in the day that linked running back Jonas Gray to the Cowboys. According to Williams (via Twitter), the Cowboys didn’t have interest in trading for Gray, but could be interested now that he has been cut by the Pats. The young back will become a free agent tomorrow unless he’s claimed on waivers or signs to a practice squad.
Minor NFL Transactions: 7/28/15
Today’s minor moves and signings..
- The Bills cut Deon Broomfield from injured reserve, Wilson tweets.
- The Browns announced that they have signed offensive lineman Erle Ladson while waiving defensive back Micah Pellerin, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon-Journal tweets.
- The Panthers waived running back Darrin Reaves, who saw a good amount of playing time last season as the Panthers had issues with their backfield, ESPN.com’s David Newton writes. Meanwhile, Carolina inked tackles Tony Hills and Davonte Wallace.
Earlier Updates:
- Bengals wide receiver James Wright has been released with a waived/injured designation, according to Coley Harvey of ESPN.com (on Twitter). If he isn’t claimed tomorrow, he’ll be placed on the Bengals’ IR for the season.
- The Cowboys released running back Ryan Williams, linebacker Cameron Lawrence, and offensive lineman Ryan Miller while signing running back Gus Johnson, offensive lineman Ronald Patrick, and linebacker Justin Anderson, Todd Archer of ESPN.com tweets.
- The Cardinals placed wide receiver Damond Powell on the reserve/NFI list, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com tweets. The move creates a place for tight end Jermaine Gresham on the 90-man roster.
- The Jets announced that they have released kicker Andrew Furney. That move will create room for the addition of wide receiver Austin Hill, who was picked up yesterday. Furney was signed by the Jets last offseason as an undrafted free agent out of Washington State to compete with Nick Folk during the ’14 training camp. He signed a reserve/future contract to return to the Jets last Dec. 30.
- The Bears signed defensive lineman David Carter to a one-year deal, Adam Jahns of the Chicago Tribune tweets. To make room, linebacker Jonathan Brown has been waived.
Minor Moves: Wednesday
Here are Wednesday’s minor moves from around the NFL, with any additional transactions added to the top of the list throughout the evening:
- Bills defensive back Deon Broomfield has reverted to the reserve-injured list after being waived-injured and going unclaimed, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post (on Twitter). Broomfield was waived on Tuesday to make room for defensive tackle Andre Fluellen.
- The Raiders cut former Michigan receiver Jeremy Gallon from IR, Wilson tweets. Gallon joined Oakland on a reserve deal in December.
- Having been waived yesterday with an injured designation after suffering a torn ACL, tight end Zach Sudfeld went unclaimed and reverted to the Jets‘ injured reserve list today, tweets Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.
Earlier updates:
- The Panthers have signed former Chiefs guard Ricky Henry, waiving center Ronald Patrick to create room, the team announced today (via Twitter). Henry spent the 2014 season on Kansas City’s practice squad before signing a futures contract with the team and being waived last month.
- The Steelers have also made a minor change on their offensive line, signing interior lineman Collin Rahrig and waiving tackle Micah Hatchie with an injured designation, per Burt Lauten (Twitter link). Rahrig initially tried out for Pittsburgh after the draft in May.
- Back-of-the-roster players often find themselves being frequently signed and waived during the regular season, as teams shuffle their regular season rosters, but that back and forth is happening for running back Rasheed Williams during the offseason. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press (via Twitter), the Lions cut Williams again today. It’s the second time Williams has been let go by the club since first being signed as an undrafted free agent last month.
Panthers To Sign Five Tryout Players
The Carolina Panthers had a number of players come in to tryout during rookie camp, and they are now expecting to sign five of those players.
The team is looking to sign defensive end Rakim Cox, who was a standout at the veteran combine, according to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports 1 (via Twitter). The former Villanova defensive end spent time with both the Dolphins and Vikings last season, but failed to catch on with either team.
Another player expected to sign is tight end Jamie Childers from Coastal Carolina University. Childers played briefly with the Giants and Bills, and even started a game at quarterback in college, writes Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer (via Twitter).
The team will also sign fullback Lee Ward, and offensive linemen Ronald Patrick and Jordan McCray, according to Person (via Twitter).
Bears Notes: McDonald, Forte, Cutler
Bears defensive end Ray McDonald hasn’t been charged despite a sexual assault allegation in December, and said Tuesday he’s “extremely confident” he will not be, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times writes. “I had two incidences as to where I feel like I didn’t do anything wrong,” he said. “But, still, it’s in the spotlight. It was in the national spotlight for quite some time. I’m just trying to move forward from it. I’m a Bear now. I’m just trying to help this team win football games.” More from Chicago..
- When asked about the whereabouts of running back Matt Forte, John Fox replied: “I prefer he’d be here,” according to Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times (on Twitter). Forte has been absent from the team’s voluntary workouts and, ostensibly, is looking for a contract extension.
- Bears quarterback Jay Cutler acknowledged that his relationship with former teammate Brandon Marshall wasn’t the best. “We’ve had our ups and downs and back-and-forths,” the quarterback said of the wide receiver (via Jahns on Twitter).
- TE Gator Hoskins, G/C Ronald Patrick, NT Derrick Hopkins, OLB Rakim Cox, S Malcolm Bronson are all tryout players at the Bears’ minicamp, Jahns tweets.
