49ers To Work Out Jamon Brown

Jamon Brown could be on the verge of landing his next job. The 49ers will audition the offensive lineman on Friday, according to Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com (on Twitter).

[RELATED: 49ers DE Nick Bosa To Miss Time]

Brown started nine games last season but the Falcons released him from his three-year, $18.75MM deal earlier this week. Finances may have been a factor, but the Falcons also seem to be high on third-round pick Matt Hennessy, who may wind up as the team’s starting left guard. Brown, meanwhile, is still owed $4.75MM in guaranteed base salary from Atlanta.

Brown has bounced around a bit since 2018, when a suspension cost him his starting gig with the Rams. The Giants picked him up off of waivers that year, prior to his free agent deal with the Falcons. All in all, Brown has 60 career games to his credit, including 47 starts.

49ers DE Nick Bosa To Miss Time

Injuries interrupted Nick Bosa‘s final Ohio State year and his first 49ers training camp. The 2019 defensive rookie of the year has run into another health hurdle in his second NFL camp.

The standout San Francisco defensive end underwent an MRI and will miss some time due to a muscle strain, according to the team. The 49ers have tabbed Bosa as week-to-week. It’s a lower-body issue, with Bosa experiencing leg pain this week.

Bosa missed the 2019 preseason because of a high ankle sprain. That came after a core muscle injury ended his junior season and Buckeyes career early. Considering his history, protecting the former No. 2 overall pick certainly makes sense.

Despite missing most of the 49ers’ 2019 camp, Bosa became one of the league’s best defensive players last season. He played in all 19 49er games and played perhaps the lead role in the team assembling the No. 2 DVOA defense.

The 49ers are also down Dee Ford for the time being. The seventh-year pass rusher is dealing with a calf malady, though the team has labeled its older defensive end as day-to-day. Unlike Bosa, Ford was not able to shake off his preseason injury issues last year. Ford either played hurt or missed time last season, with hamstring and knee issues limiting him to a part-time role. Ford underwent knee surgery this offseason.

49ers Barring Fans From Week 1 Game

  • SoFi Stadium will debut next month, but fans will not be permitted to watch those games. The Chargers and Rams will not have fans at home games “until further notice,” the teams announced. The 49ers will take a similar route. No fans will attend their Week 1 game against the Cardinals. With California being one of the most cautious states during the pandemic, this is certainly not unexpected.

49ers Working Out Kevin White, Justin Hardy, Other WRs

Despite agreeing to terms with three veteran wide receivers recently, the 49ers are still looking for help at the position. They are working out four wideouts Tuesday.

Former top-10 pick Kevin White, ex-Falcons role player Justin Hardy, Johnny Holton and River Cracraft are taking part in the audition, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. This marks White’s second workout in a week. The Jets brought in the former Bears draftee previously.

San Francisco already added Tavon Austin, J.J. Nelson and Jaron Brown, but the team is dealing with a host of injuries. Deebo Samuel remains out with his foot fracture, while Richie James is battling a broken hand. First-round pick Brandon Aiyuk is dealing with a hamstring injury, further clouding the 49ers’ potential first-string wideout picture. Jalen Hurd also suffered an ACL tear recently, with that setback following Travis Benjamin‘s opt-out decision.

Kyle Shanahan was in Atlanta when the Falcons drafted Hardy in the 2015 fourth round. He played five seasons with the Falcons, playing a reserve role. While Hardy has 95 career catches for 946 yards, he has never eclipsed 225 in a season. Holton played a lesser role for the Raiders and played 16 games — mostly as a special-teamer — with the Steelers in 2019. Cracraft has operated mostly as a Broncos return man. The latter’s most recent work in Denver came in ex-49ers assistant Rich Scangarello‘s offense.

White went nearly a year without a connection to an NFL team. The Cardinals released the former No. 7 overall pick last August, but he has begun to resurface on the NFL radar. Although White has played in only 14 games since being a sought-after 2015 prospect, 2020 would still be just his age-28 season. It does not appear teams are throwing in the towel on his career yet.

49ers To Sign TE Erik Swoope

The 49ers have agreed to sign tight end Erik Swoope, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Swoope spent the 2019 season away from football after being dropped by the Raiders last summer.

[RELATED: 49ers To Consider Earl Thomas?]

Swoope, a former basketball standout at the University of Miami, had a noteworthy year with the Colts in 2016. Thanks in part to injury, the 28-year-old has yet to see similar playing time since then or match his average of 19.8 yards per reception (across a limited sample of 15 catches). Injuries have been partly to blame, including a 2017 season that was wiped out by knee surgery.

The 49ers already boast the scariest TE duo in the league in George Kittle and Jordan Reed. Still, Reed has been limited throughout camp and reinforcements wouldn’t be a bad idea given his troubling history with concussions.

In other Niners news, the club has been connected with free agent safety Earl Thomas. There might not be as much competition for the Pro Bowler as expected – the Falcons, Texans, and other possible fits have decided to pass.

Ravens Release Earl Thomas

11:37am: The Ravens have released Thomas, the team announced. The wording of the announcement suggests that Baltimore will indeed attempt to void his $10MM guaranteed salary for 2020 for conduct detrimental to the team.

9:12am: The Ravens will trade or release star safety Earl Thomas, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports (via Twitter). Thomas got into a physical altercation with teammate Chuck Clark at practice on Friday, and the team sent the three-time First Team All-Pro home on Saturday. Baltimore told Thomas to stay away from the facility today, so it definitely sounded like a parting of the ways was in the works.

Schefter notes in a separate tweet that the Cowboys, who have long been connected to Thomas, are once again a candidate to land him. The ESPN scribe adds that Baltimore has been trying to complete a trade throughout the weekend, though obviously nothing has materialized just yet (Twitter link). Ian Rapoport of NFL.com says (via Twitter) that the 49ers and Texans could also be in the mix, while Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News says the Cowboys will not trade for Thomas (Twitter link). Dallas could make a play for him if he is released.

The Ravens’ decision comes just one year after they landed Thomas, arguably the best safety of his generation, on a four-year, $55MM free agent contract. So any club that trades for the 31-year-old would be taking on the remainder of that hefty deal, though Thomas could certainly agree to some sort of restructure in order to facilitate a trade.

Without such a restructure, the Ravens would see a $15MM dead cap charge this year, though Thomas was set to count $15MM against the cap if he stayed with Baltimore, so that’s basically a wash. However, the Ravens would be left with a $10MM dead money hit in 2021 (when the salary cap is likely to be reduced), making this a major financial issue.

Of course, the Ravens don’t have a ton of leverage in trade talks right now, so a release could be forthcoming. If that happens, then obviously the same dead money charges would apply, though Baltimore could try to void Thomas’ guaranteed $10MM salary for 2020 for conduct detrimental to the team, thereby alleviating the burden. Thomas would almost certainly grieve such a move, but Baltimore would stand a good chance of succeeding in the grievance process. After all, the altercation started when Clark, Thomas’ would-be running mate at safety, became upset after Thomas blew a coverage assignment. Clark slammed his helmet to the ground, and Thomas escalated matters by throwing a punch. Thomas later posted a video of the play itself on social media, which is clearly prohibited.

That the Ravens are willing to take on a potentially massive dead cap hit while parting ways with a player like Thomas is indicative of just how bad of a fit he was in the team’s locker room. The incident with Clark, who is well-respected by his teammates, angered a number of prominent players, as Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic details. And last year, Thomas was late for or missed several team and position meetings, and he reportedly already missed one position meeting this year.

His Ravens teammates had grown weary of his antics and wanted him gone, but they might very well miss his on-field presence. Though Thomas struggled in the early portion of the 2019 campaign as he learned Baltimore’s defensive system, his play improved considerably as the year went on, and opposing offenses generally avoided him. He did not make many splash plays, but he was consistently strong in coverage and earned his seventh career Pro Bowl nod.

For now, Thomas will be replaced by DeShon Elliot, a promising young player who has dealt with injury problems in the early stages of his career. Elliott was selected in the sixth round of the 2018 draft.

49ers Place WR Jalen Hurd On IR

Jalen Hurd will lose a second straight NFL season to injury. Following the young wide receiver’s ACL tear, the 49ers placed him on IR Thursday.

The 49ers drafted Hurd in the 2019 third round, and the Baylor and Tennessee alum has flashed when healthy. But he will exit 2020 having played in zero of 32 regular-season games to start his career. A stress reaction in his back cost Hurd his 2019 season.

The 6-foot-4, 227-pound prospect displayed considerable versatility in college, converting from running back to wide receiver. He played ahead of Alvin Kamara in Tennessee’s backfield in 2015, rushing for 1,285 yards and 12 touchdowns. Upon transferring to Baylor, Hurd moved to wide receiver. He caught 69 passes for 946 yards as a senior with the Bears.

Kyle Shanahan is holding out hope Deebo Samuel can return by Week 1, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com (on Twitter), but the fourth-year 49ers HC did not previously sound optimistic on that front. Samuel sustained a foot fracture in June. The 49ers have signed Tavon Austin, J.J. Nelson and Jaron Brown over the past week.
