Cardinals Rule Out J.J. Watt For Week 8
The Packers will not be the only ones missing key personnel for Thursday night’s NFC showdown. The Cardinals will be without J.J. Watt. Arizona ruled out Watt with a shoulder injury. Watt did not practice this week.
Watt has thus far delivered on the big-ticket deal he signed to relocate to Arizona, helping the Cardinals to their first 7-0 start since 1974 and playing a central role in the team ranking in the top five in scoring and total defense. The 32-year-old defender has played inside and outside for the Cardinals, who signed him to a two-year, $28MM deal this offseason. Pro Football Focus ranks Watt as a top-10 interior D-lineman through seven games.
But injuries have certainly been an issue for the all-time great. Another one will sideline him for the Cards’ Week 8 tilt. Injuries in 2016 and ’17 interrupted Watt’s stratospheric pace, and although the three-time Defensive Player of the Year returned to an All-Pro level in 2018, the former Texans superstar missed a chunk of the 2019 season as well. From 2016-19, Watt missed 32 games. Thursday will be his first absence since that 2019 season, however.
Arizona will have Chandler Jones back after he spent the past two weeks on their reserve/COVID-19 list. The team activated Jones and defensive lineman Zach Allen from the virus list.
Green Bay will be down Davante Adams and Allen Lazard, with both landing on the team’s COVID list. The Packers could activate All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari, who returned to practice last week. Giving the veteran blocker an extra 10 days to come off the PUP list would make sense as well.

Cardinals HC Kliff Kingsbury Clears COVID Protocols
Oct. 24: Kingsbury has cleared COVID-19 protocols and will be on the sidelines for today’s game against Houston, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. The Cards are in search of a 7-0 start, and they are heavily favored to defeat the one-win Texans.
Oct. 16: The Cardinals are looking to improve to 6-0 tomorrow, but they won’t have their head coach on the sideline. Kliff Kingsbury has tested positive for COVID-19 and won’t coach tomorrow’s game against the Browns, per NFL.com.

According to the team, defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers will share head coaching duties during tomorrow’s contest. Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo (via Twitter), Kingsbury will “script as much as he can” prior to the game, but the organization will be relying on a collaborative approach when the script inevitably goes awry. Garafolo notes that QBs Kyler Murray and Colt McCoy will even have a say on offensive play calling.
We heard earlier this week that edge rusher Chandler Jones had tested positive, and he’s unlikely to play tomorrow after showing symptoms. The team will also be without GM Steve Keim, who tested positive and won’t make the trip to Cleveland. QB coach Cam Turner and defensive tackle Zach Allen also tested positive and won’t travel with the team.
As a result of the positive tests, the Cardinals are now dealing with “enhanced COVID-19 protocols,” but the NFL doesn’t have any intention of rescheduling or postponing tomorrow’s game.

Cardinals Restructure Jordan Phillips’ Deal
On their longest season-opening unbeaten run since 1974, the Cardinals added a piece to their skill-position corps by acquiring Zach Ertz from the Eagles. On Thursday, they created some breathing room after adding Ertz’s salary.
The Cardinals restructured Jordan Phillips‘ contract, according to ESPN.com’s Field Yates, who notes the team converted $6.5MM of the defensive lineman’s base salary into a signing bonus (Twitter link). Arizona dipped into the void-years well here, adding two to a contract that already ran through 2022. All told, the Cards created $5.21MM in cap space.
Ertz is due more than $4MM in base salary the rest of the way. He joins a Cardinals team that has perennially struggled to generate production from its tight end position and one that recently lost Maxx Williams for the season. Between Ertz, DeAndre Hopkins and A.J. Green, Arizona’s pass-catching contingent now has 15 combined Pro Bowl nods.
The Cards gave Phillips a three-year, $30MM deal in 2020. As a result of Thursday’s restructure, that contract will become more difficult to shed in 2022.
Phillips, 29, returned to the field Sunday after nearly a year away. After recovering from a back injury that had sidelined him for the season’s first five games, the veteran interior D-lineman played 21 defensive snaps in his first game back and came off the bench in the 6-0 Cardinals’ win in Cleveland.
Titans To Sign Greg Mabin
The Titans are signing cornerback Greg Mabin off of the Cardinals’ practice squad, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter). He’ll provide some much-needed depth for the Titans, who have lost several CBs to injury.
Caleb Farley is done for the year after suffering a torn ACL against the Bills. Meanwhile, the Titans are awaiting word on Kristian Fulton‘s hamstring and Chris Jackson‘s foot, which forced him to exit early on Monday night.
Mabin doesn’t offer same kind of upside of Farley, but he did spent time with the team in camp, so he’s familiar with defensive coordinator Shane Bowen‘s playbook.
The 27-year-old appeared in a total of 34 games from 2017-2020, spending time with the Bills, 49ers, Bengals, and Jaguars. Last year, he notched 21 tackles and three passes defensed for Jacksonville in five games, including four starts.
The Titans are 4-2 following their 34-31 win over the Bills. They’ll look to pad their divisional lead even more on Sunday when they welcome the Chiefs to Nashville.

Cardinals Place C Rodney Hudson On IR
More tough news for the Cardinals. They were set to be without Rodney Hudson this week, but the team placed its starting center on IR Saturday, sidelining him for at least three games.
Hudson is battling rib and shoulder injuries. The Pro Bowl blocker will miss Cardinals games against the Browns, Texans and Packers. Arizona’s quest to remain unbeaten in Cleveland keeps becoming more difficult. Hudson, Chandler Jones, defensive lineman Zach Allen, HC Kliff Kingsbury and QBs coach Cam Turner are out. The latter four are sidelined after testing positive for COVID-19.
Acquired via trade from the Raiders this offseason, Hudson has been one of the NFL’s top centers for several seasons. He represented Arizona’s top O-line add this year and joined J.J. Watt and A.J. Green as Pro Bowlers brought in this offseason. Veteran backup Max Garcia is set to start in Hudson’s place.
The Cardinals will receive some reinforcements, with defensive lineman Jordan Phillips coming off IR. A higher-end 2020 free agency addition, Phillips returned to practice earlier this week. He will return to game action after nearly a year away. The former Dolphins and Bills interior D-lineman went on IR with a hamstring injury midway through last season and suffered a back injury during this year’s training camp.
In addition to Phillips, the Cards activated tackle Joshua Miles from IR and flexed tight end Ross Travis, linebacker Joe Walker and O-lineman Danny Isidora to their 53-man roster for Week 6.
