Lions To Sign K Riley Patterson Off Patriots’ Practice Squad

Although the Lions no longer have ex-Patriot staffers running their operation, they still looked to the New England roster to help their kicking situation.

The Lions are signing kicker Riley Patterson off the Patriots’ practice squad, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com tweets. The team is restocking its kicker situation, with the Detroit Free Press’ Dave Birkett adding (via Twitter) the team is signing Aldrick Rosas to its practice squad. Detroit placed Austin Seibert on IR on Saturday.

By rule, Patterson must remain on the Lions’ active roster for at least three weeks. The former Memphis kicker will replace Ryan Santoso here. Santoso is now off Detroit’s practice squad.

Santoso kicked in three games for the Lions, his fourth team this year, and went 5-for-6 on extra points and 2-for-3 on field goals. The missed field goal came during Sunday’s tie game in Pittsburgh, which certainly did not feature optimal kicking conditions. Santoso has been with the Giants, Panthers, Titans and Lions this year.

Patterson entered the league as a Vikings UDFA in May but bounced to the Patriots last month. Minnesota cut him from its IR via injury settlement in August. Patterson has yet to kick in an NFL game but spent the previous four seasons as Memphis’ kicker. He made 92% of his field goal tries as a junior in 2019 but saw his make rate plummet to 68% last season. Patterson will be the Lions’ third kicker this year, following Seibert and Santoso.

Santoso joined the Giants a few months after they waived Rosas, who has since bounced to the Jaguars and Saints. New Orleans moved on from the former Pro Bowler earlier this season. Rosas kicked in four games with the Saints, making 1 of 4 field goal attempts.

Snacks Harrison Announces Retirement

After nine NFL seasons, Snacks intends to walk away from the game. Damon Harrison announced his retirement on Saturday (via Twitter).

Some interest emerged for the veteran nose tackle in the spring, but Harrison, 32, did not catch on anywhere this year. He will step away after 124 games and 111 starts as a pro.

Although Harrison contemplated retirement at the end of the 2019 season, he returned for one more and played with the Seahawks and Packers last season. Snacks’ seven games in Seattle and Green Bay will be closer to the footnote section of his career, one that included multiple seasons with the Jets, Giants and Lions.

Harrison latched on with the Jets as a UDFA in 2012 out of NAIA William Penn (Iowa) and became a starter during his second season. Snacks’ high-end Jets production, alongside Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson, led to the Giants giving him a five-year, $46.25MM deal in the 2016 offseason — when Big Blue loaded up with vets on defense.

Olivier Vernon and Janoris Jenkins joined Snacks by signing with the Giants that offseason, and that trio played a key part in the Giants advancing to the 2016 playoffs. While Harrison did not receive a Pro Bowl invite during his career, he earned first-team All-Pro recognition for his work that season.

A struggling Giants team traded Harrison to the Lions ahead of the 2018 deadline, when they also unloaded Eli Apple, and Snacks played in Detroit through the end of the 2019 campaign. Harrison finished his career with 494 tackles and 37 tackles for loss.

Rams Tried To Claim WR Josh Reynolds

The Rams made an attempt to acquire one of their former wideouts. Los Angeles placed a claim on wide receiver Josh Reynolds, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler (via Twitter). Reynolds ended up getting claimed by the Lions thanks to their top waiver position.

The 2017 fourth-round pick spent the first four seasons of his career with the Rams. He finally emerged in 2020, hauling in 52 receptions for 618 yards and two touchdowns. However, Reynolds was never going to have a shot at cracking the top of the Rams depth chart, and he ended up joining the Titans this offseason.

Reynolds’ signing came before the team traded for Julio Jones, and the FA acquisition was buried on the depth chart by the start of the season. The 26-year-old only saw time in five games this year with Tennessee, hauling in 10 receptions for 90 yards. He only appeared in five offensive snaps in Week 8 before not playing in Week 9. Reynolds asked for and was granted his release by the Titans earlier this week.

Now, the wideout will team up with his former QB, Jared Goff. However, he could have rejoined former teammates Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods. 2020 second-round pick Van Jefferson has stepped up with Reynolds out of the picture in Los Angeles, hauling in 27 receptions for 433 yards and three touchdowns.

Lions Claim WR Josh Reynolds

The Lions put their top waiver position to good use Wednesday, claiming wide receiver Josh Reynolds, per NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero (on Twitter).

Reynolds requested his release from Tennessee, and because this move came after the trade deadline, the fifth-year wideout went through waivers. He did not make it past team No. 1 in the priority but will head to a Lions team in need at the position.

Detroit’s offseason signings of Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman did not work out. Perriman did not make the Lions’ 53-man roster, and a Williams concussion led to an IR trip and an eventual injury settlement. The Lions parted ways with Williams last week. T.J. Hockenson and D’Andre Swift lead the Lions in receiving yards; Kalif Raymond‘s 334 is the most among Detroit’s wideouts.

This claim will reunite Reynolds and Jared Goff, who played together for four seasons in Los Angeles. A fourth-round Rams pick in 2017, Reynolds played an auxiliary role with L.A. but saw decent run in 2020. The 6-foot-3 target caught 52 passes for 618 yards and two scores last year, helping pave a path to Tennessee in free agency. The Titans fit did not pan out; Reynolds has just 10 receptions for 90 yards this season. His one-year contract contains less than $1MM in remaining base salary.
