Giants To Sign Buck Allen, Cut Jon Hilliman
The Giants moved fast to fortify their backfield. Buck Allen‘s Friday workout will produce a signing, with Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweeting the former Raven will replace Jon Hilliman on the Giants’ roster.
Hilliman fumbled twice in Thursday night’s loss to the Patriots and will head to the waiver wire. Big Blue also worked out C.J. Anderson and Akeem Hunt but will go with Allen, who is now with his second team since his Ravens contract expired.
A 2015 fourth-round pick, Allen caught on with the Saints but saw that tenure end quickly. New Orleans placed him on IR and parted ways with the fifth-year running back via injury settlement. After Allen’s first known workout since that move, he has another gig. Allen, 28, posted two 500-yard seasons in Ravens backfield committees, in 2015 and ’17, though each came with sub-4.0-yards-per-carry averages.
A Rutgers product, Hilliman was a Giants 2019 UDFA summoned to action because of Saquon Barkley‘s high ankle sprain and Wayne Gallman‘s concussion. Hilliman began the season on New York’s practice squad and could return to that 10-man unit if he clears waivers. Though, he will be doing so after a rough nationally televised outing. Barkley is expected to return for Week 7, with Gallman’s timetable a bit murkier. In Allen, Giants now have some experienced depth behind their top duo.
Giants Place WR Russell Shepard On IR
The Giants have placed wide receiver Russell Shepard on injured reserve and promoted running back Jon Hilliman from the practice squad, the club announced today.
Shepard, 29, had been working as New York’s fourth wideout behind Sterling Shepard, Bennie Fowler, and Cody Latimer. On 73 offensive snaps, Shepard had posted three receptions for 25 yards on eight targets. With veteran pass-catcher Golden Tate due back from a suspension in Week 5, Shepard — who recently suffered a foot sprain — is no longer needed. He could potentially return from IR in eight weeks, but it seems unlikely the Giants would use an IR/return slot on Shepard.
Hilliman will become New York’s third healthy running back behind Wayne Gallman and Elijhaa Penny, and will serve as depth while starter Saquon Barkley is shelved four-to-eight weeks with a high-ankle sprain. A 2019 undrafted free agent, Hilliman signed with the Giants’ practice squad August after getting waived at final cutdowns. He spent three years at Boston College and one at Rutgers, managing 3.5 yards per carry during his collegiate career.

Giants Cut Kyle Lauletta; Reach 53
The Giants waived quarterback Kyle Lauletta as a part of their moves to reach the 53-man roster limit. The move leaves Alex Tanney as the No. 3 QB behind starter Eli Manning and first-round pick Daniel Jones.
Between an October arrest and a poor professional debut, Lauletta dug himself into a bit of a hole. Although the 2018 fourth-round pick is just 24 and had enough upside to merit a mid-round selection, the 31-year-old Tanney edged him out in practice. This, perhaps, isn’t a huge surprise after the G-Men signed him to a two-year, $2.1MM contract with $775K guaranteed.

Cue the quarterback controversy, as Dungey could be coming for Daniel Jones‘ job. Well, probably not, but Dungey was in high demand after the draft was over, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. Dungey had offers from about five clubs, but a telephone call between the former Orange signal-caller and New York head coach Pat Shurmur helped seal the deal. Dungey could theoretically stick as the third QB if Big Blue goes in that direction, and his athleticism will certainly help his case for a roster spot, as he could contribute on special teams and/or as a gadget player. Dungey passed for 9,340 yards with 58 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in his four seasons at Syracuse, but he also rushed for 1,993 yards and 35 touchdowns.
The Giants addressed their flagging pass rush to some degree in the draft by selecting Old Dominion defensive end Oshane Ximines in the third round, and they may have uncovered a gem in Harvey, a converted running back. Harvey had 14.5 sacks last year and was named the AAC’s Defensive Player of the Year.
As evidenced by the large amount of guaranteed money they’re giving him, the Giants think highly of Tauaefa, a tackling machine who is capable of making plays behind the line of scrimmage and who posted over 100 tackles in two of his three collegiate seasons. And after adding three DBs in the draft, Big Blue added three more via UDFA signings, further underscoring its commitment to improving its defensive backfield.
