Cowboys’ Antwaun Woods Arrested
Cowboys defensive tackle Antwaun Woods was arrested earlier this week, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Woods faces charges for marijuana possession and tampering with evidence, which could lead to legal consequences and league discipline.
Woods was arrested on Tuesday at a traffic stop and police say he was found with 2.07 ounces of marijuana, plus a joint. The tampering with evidence charge, presumably, stems from an alleged attempt to hide the weed.
According to the police report, Woods was going 77 in a 60 mph zone. The bigger issue, of course, is the marijuana – in Texas, the tampering charge is a third-degree felony, while the possession charge is a Class A misdemeanor.
Woods, 26, has started in all eight of his games this year. So far, he has 15 total tackles and one fumble recovery on his stat sheet.
This offseason, the Cowboys will have the option of retaining him as a restricted free agent. Because Woods entered the league as an undrafted free agent, he’d cost roughly $2MM to keep.
Injury Notes: Winston, Rams, Cowboys, Pack
Here is the latest from the injury front at the midweek point, beginning with another NFC South quarterback encountering injury trouble.
- Jameis Winston is now battling a foot injury. The Buccaneers quarterback, who is in a contract year, appears on the team’s first Week 3 injury report with this issue. Winston joins Drew Brees and Cam Newton as injured NFC South quarterbacks, but his malady doesn’t appear to be nearly as severe. Winston practiced fully on Wednesday and appears in line to face the Giants.
- Austin Blythe needed a cart to leave the field Sunday at Los Angeles Coliseum, but the Rams‘ starting right guard looks to have dodged significant trouble. The fourth-year blocker said (via ESPN.com’s Lindsey Thiry, on Twitter) he suffered a low ankle sprain. Blythe is not certain how much time he will miss, but considering how he left the field, this may have been the best possible outcome. If he cannot return for Sunday’s game in Cleveland, 2018 sixth-rounder Jamil Demby would be in line to start.
- Cowboys defensive tackle Antwaun Woods suffered an MCL sprain in Week 2, per Todd Archer of ESPN.com. Second-round pick Trysten Hill stands to be called to action if Woods is out against the Dolphins on Sunday. Hill has yet to be active this season. Woods started 15 games as Dallas’ nose tackle last season and has reprised that role this year.
- Darnell Savage left Sunday’s Packers-Vikings game in a walking boot, but the rookie safety looks to have received good news. Savage shed the walking boot, per The Athletic’s Matt Schneiderman (on Twitter), and has been diagnosed with a shin injury. It looks like he will be good to go for Week 3’s game against the Broncos.
Cowboys Notes: Frederick, Colombo, Colman
Cowboys center Travis Frederick underwent shoulder surgery last week to repair a labrum issue, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.com. Head coach Jason Garrett received the news of Frederick’s operation as a positive, an indication that Frederick is preparing for the 2019 campaign after missing the entirety of last season while battling Guillain-Barre syndrome. Frederick, an All-Pro caliber pivot when healthy, regained feeling in his hands in November, and hasn’t dealt with any recent numbness, per Archer. In December, Frederick expressed optimism that he’ll be ready for next season.
Here’s more from Dallas:
- Offensive line coach Marc Colombo will return to the Cowboys in 2019 after agreeing to a new contract, reports Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News (Twitter link). Colombo, 40, played for Dallas from 2005-10, then joined the club’s staff as assistant offensive line coach prior to the 2016 season. He interviewed for the Cowboys’ tight ends coach job last January, and was “in the mix” to take over Dallas’ front five after the team fired Frank Pollack following the 2017 season. Instead, that job went to Paul Alexander, whom Colombo ended up replacing midway through the 2018 campaign.
- Cowboys defensive Antwaun Woods tore his labrum in the second quarter of Dallas’ Divisional Round loss to the Rams, and in an impressive show of will, played the rest of the game, per Rapoport (Twitter link). Woods underwent surgery to correct the issue today. A 2016 undrafted free agent who spent his first two NFL seasons on the Titans’ practice squad, Woods played the most snaps of any Cowboys defensive tackle last seaaon. He’s under contract at the league minimum in 2019, and will be a restricted free agent the following offesason.
- The Cowboys have fired assistant special teams coach Doug Colman, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. At this point, that’s the only known change to the Dallas coaching staff. Colman, 45, previously served as a linebacker/special teams assistant with the Texans before joining the Cowboys last offseason. Dallas ranked 23rd in Football Outsiders’ special teams metrics in 2018.

Titans Claim OT John Theus
John Theus has found a new home. ESPN’s Field Yates reports (via Twitter) that the offensive tackle has been claimed off waivers by the Titans. The 24-year-old was waived by the Saints yesterday. To make room on the roster, the Titans have waived/injured defensive lineman Antwaun Woods (via Jim Wyatt of TitansOnline.com).
The 2016 fifth-round pick out of Georgia has bounced around the league since joining the NFL, spending time with the 49ers, Panthers, and Saints. He has appeared in four career games (including a single start), but he didn’t see the field during the 2017 campaign. The offensive lineman landed on New Orleans’ injured reserve earlier this month with an undisclosed illness.
Theus will likely have an uphill battle to make the Titans roster, as the organization is already rostering a number of capable tackles. Behind projected starters Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin (who could miss time with a knee ailment), Kevin Pamphile, Corey Levin, Dennis Kelly, and Tyler Marz are all competing for playing time.
Woods, a 2016 undrafted free agent out of USC, has spent his entire career with the Titans organization. The 25-year-old appeared in one game during his rookie campaign, compiling three tackles.

The 26-year-old Division II product played in five games for the Saints this season.
