Saints To Sign DTs Jaleel Johnson, Montravius Adams

The Saints are expected to sign DT Jaleel Johnson, according to veteran NFL reporter Aaron Wilson (via Twitter). The Texans released Johnson as part of final cutdowns last week.

Though Johnson signed a modest one-year, $1.3MM pact with Houston this offseason, his ouster came as something of a surprise given his generally strong performance in training camp and the preseason. Texans GM Nick Caserio elected to go in a different direction, and New Orleans was quick to pounce.

The Saints will be without DT David Onyemata for the first six games of the season due to a PED suspension, and the club lost fellow D-lineman Jalen Dalton — who had been having a good summer as well — to a season-ending injury. That opens the door for Johnson, a run-stuffer who appeared in all 48 games for the Vikings over the past three seasons (including 16 starts in 2020) to come in and compete for snaps.

Montravius Adams is also hoping to carve out a role for himself in the Big Easy. Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reported (via Twitter) that the Saints are signing the former Packers third-rounder, who signed with the Patriots in March but who could not crack New England’s final roster.

Adams entered the league with tantalizing raw ability and physical tools, but he played in less than 600 snaps over the course of four seasons in Green Bay. Last year, he was limited to eight games due to a sprained toe, and he did not do quite enough this summer to stick with the Pats.

With Onyemata sidelined, Adams and Johnson will jockey for playing time alongside Shy Tuttle, Malcolm Roach, and Christian Ringo.

Patriots Reduce Roster To 53

The Patriots made headlines earlier today when they cut quarterback Cam Newton, a move that made rookie Mac Jones the starter. The team has since reduced their roster to 53 players, and we’ve detailed each of the moves (including those previously reported) below:

The Patriots veterans are most notable, but the organization also waived a pair of 2021 draft picks. Sherman was a sixth-round pick out of Colorado who appeared in 30 games during his collegiate career. Nixon was a seventh-round pick; the wideout split his collegiate career between Ole Miss and Central Florida, earning All-AAC honors in 2019.

Patriots To Sign Montravius Adams

The Patriots have been the big spenders of the first week of free agency, and they aren’t done yet. New England is signing defensive end Montravius Adams, his agent Drew Rosenhaus tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

It’s a one-year pact worth up to $2.5MM, Schefter reports. As he notes, it’s the fifth deal that Rosenhaus has done with the Pats this week. Adams comes to the Patriots from Green Bay, where he didn’t get much playing time but apparently flashed enough promise. A third-round pick out of Auburn in 2017, Adams appeared in only eight games this past year with no starts, making 11 tackles and no sacks.

He played 12.6 percent of the defensive snaps total, so about 25 percent in the eight games he played. He started two games in 2019 and one the year before. He has just 1.5 sacks in his career. It’s not as splashy as some of their other signings, but the defensive front was a weakness for the Patriots last year and Bill Belicihck is leaving no stone unturned in improving it. Adams is still only 25.

Packers DT Montravius Adams Arrested

Packers defensive tackle Montravius Adams was arrested in his home state of Georgia on Tuesday, per Tom Green of AL.com. Unlike the NFL players that have been booked over the past week or so, however, Adams is facing fairly minor charges.

According to the Associated Press, Adams was pulled over on suspicion of driving with a suspended registration and no insurance. Upon approaching the car, the officer smelled marijuana, and Adams was ultimately charged with three misdemeanors: possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, driving with a suspended registration, and driving without insurance.

The new collective bargaining agreement says players cannot be suspended for marijuana-related offenses, so Adams will presumably avoid league discipline and is unlikely to face any notable legal consequences. He was released on less than $3K bond.

However, the Auburn product is entering a contract year and may not see a second deal with Green Bay (or any other team, for that matter). A third-round pick in the 2017 draft, Adams has started just three of the 37 games in which he has appeared, and he has yet to play more than 20% of the Packers’ defensive snaps in a season. Advanced metrics have not been particularly fond of his play either. In 2019, Pro Football Focus gave him below-average marks for his work against both the pass and the run.

Adams has 33 tackles and 1.5 sacks in his career.

Packers DT Montravius Adams To Miss Time

Packers rookie defensive tackle Montravius Adams suffered a stress fracture in his foot and is expected to require a screw inserted, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). While Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy announced Adams will miss “several weeks,” Rapoport indicates Adams will be hard-pressed to be available for the start of the 2017 regular season.Montravius Adams (Vertical)

Adams, the 93rd overall pick of the draft, had been expected to compete for a rotational role along the Packers’ defensive line. Clearly, that could still happen at some point later in the season, but it will be exceedingly difficult for Adams to register playing time without having had the benefit of a rookie training camp and preseason.

Adams has already practiced this year, so he isn’t eligible for the physically unable to perform list. If Green Bay wants to stash Adams without having him count towards the roster count, it will have to place him on injured reserve, and then designate him as one of two players to return from IR following an eight-week absence.

The Packers were already fairly thin along the defensive interior, especially considering that Letroy Guion will be suspended for the first four games of the season. While reserves such as Ricky Jean-Francois or Christian Ringo could potentially slide to nose tackle, Green Bay could conceivably consider outside additions. Dan Williams, Jared Odrick, Arthur Jones, and Vance Walker are the best interior lineman on the free agent market, though not all are cut out to play one-technique.

Packers Sign Rookie Montravious Adams

Adams was highly recruited coming out of high school but it took him a little while to really get started at Auburn. In 2016, he seemed to put it all together has he totaled 8.5 tackles for a loss and 4.5 sacks. The 6’4, 304 pound athlete may wind up starting at nose tackle for the Packers in the early going as Letroy Guion serves a four-game suspension.

Adams was one of ten unsigned rookies heading into Wednesday. With Raiders sign third-round pick Eddie Vanderdoes also under contract, we’re now down to just eight unsigned draft picks league-wide. Interestingly, seven of those eight players are first-round selections.
