Panthers To Audition Washington QB Kevin Thomson

Washington quarterback Kevin Thomson will join the Panthers for their rookie minicamp next week, as NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero tweets. Thomson, who had previous stops at UNLV and Sacramento State, opted to turn pro this year over an eighth year of college eligibility.

Thomson, who turns 26 in September, was on track to win the Huskies’ starting job in 2020. Instead, an undisclosed injury (believed to be his ribs) sidelined him to start the year. It was familiar territory for Thomson, who battled through back issues and other maladies throughout his collegiate career.

After that, redshirt freshman Dylan Morris held on to the job for the rest of the pandemic-shortened slate. Thomson went undrafted as a result, but the Panthers quickly reached out on Day 3. Now older than Patrick Mahomes, he’ll fight for a spot on the Panthers’ depth chart behind Sam Darnold, P.J. Walker, Will Grier, and Tommy Stevens.

“When I was at UNLV going into my second year, I had Tommy John surgery. It put me out for several months and gave me time to reflect on what I really wanted and made me realize how passionate I was about football and how I wanted to continue to pursue it,” Thomson said recently (via Yahoo Sports). “I knew it would take a tremendous amount of work to get where I wanted to be, but I was willing to do that. So I think the injury really made me a better player overall since it forced me to do some self-reflection.”

Titans’ Rashad Weaver Charged With Assault

Rashad Weaver‘s pro career isn’t getting off to the best start. The Titans rookie has been charged with simple assault, Emily Proud of WKRN Nashville tweets.

The incident apparently happened on April 18th with the report getting filed on April 30th, the day before Weaver was drafted in the fourth-round. Tennessee took the edge rusher from Pittsburgh 135th overall. According to proud, Weaver is accused of punching a woman in the head. While the report says an officer on the scene “observed no injury consistent with a punch to the head,” the report also says that “before leaving he (Weaver) stated to other officers on scene that he had no problem hitting a female if they needed it.”

The woman says she was later diagnosed with a concussion, and that she was pregnant at the time of the incident. Obviously, it’s a serious situation. Depending on how the investigation plays out, Weaver could very well be looking at a suspension before he ever suits up for an NFL game.

His attorney Dennis M. Blackwell issued a statement, which you can read in full courtesy of this tweet from Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. He calls the allegations “completely false and reckless,” and says that “without question and without hesitation, we deny Rashad punched anyone, especially a woman.”

Weaver missed the entire 2019 season with a torn ACL, then returned last year and had 7.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss in nine games. The Titans had one of the worst pass-rushes in the league last year and Weaver was the only edge rusher they picked in the 2021 draft, but it’s unclear now if they’re going to be able to count on him this season.

Meanwhile, Tennessee issued a brief statement Monday afternoon, which you can read via this tweet from beat writer Paul Kuharsky. The Titans say they were only made aware of the incident this morning and that they’re “gathering details.”

Titans Decline Rashaan Evans’ Option

The Titans have turned down Rashaan Evans‘ fifth-year option, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). The linebacker would have cost the team $9.735MM in 2022.

According to Rosenhaus, the Titans still want to discuss an extension with Evans between now and when his contract expires next year. Evans, the 22nd overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, has started all 16 games for the Titans across the last two seasons. However, his 2019 effort was much stronger than last year.

The Titans tapped Georgia’s Monty Rice on Friday, giving them a younger and cheaper alternative to Evans. They also have 2019 sixth-round pick David Long in the mix, giving them a few inside linebacker options to pair with Jayon Brown.

In 2019, Evans notched 111 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and a fumble return for a touchdown. Last season, he recorded 96 tackles, good for third on the team.

Titans Acquire No. 109 From Panthers

The Titans have jumped up to No. 109. Tennessee has acquired the early fourth-round selection from the Panthers. Carolina will acquire No. 126, No. 166, and No. 232 from the Titans.

The Titans have used their new selection on wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick. The Louisville product had his best collegiate season in 2020, finishing with 833 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 43 catches. The Titans have been connected to wideouts throughout the pre-draft process, and it was a bit of a surprise when they didn’t add a player at the position through the first two days of the draft.

Titans Draft Virginia Tech CB Caleb Farley

With the No. 22 pick, the Titans snagged Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley. He wound up lasting beyond the No. 20 pick – despite agent Drew Rosenhaus’ prediction — but he still landed in Round 1 despite the medical concerns.

If it weren’t for his multiple back surgeries, Farley could have been a top 10 pick. He hasn’t played since 2019, but his surgeon says he’ll be cleared before training camp in late July.

Originally a quarterback in high school, Farley committed to the Hokies in 2017 as a wide receiver. Then, an ACL tear wiped out his true freshman season. When he returned, he was asked to change positions again — this time, to cornerback. By 2019, he was a star defender for the Hokies, racking up four interceptions and 12 passes defensed en route to First-Team All-ACC honors. He also allowed a completion rate of less than 50% on passes thrown in his direction.

Other teams were scared off, but the Titans believe that Farley is well worth the risk. It also helps that they’ve had success in this area before. Two years ago, they took a gamble on Jeffery Simmons after his ACL tear. Now, he stands as one of the Titans’ most talented defenders.
