Foster Moreau Stepping Away From Football

Former Raiders tight end Foster Moreau has made the decision to step away from the game of football for the time being, according to the 25-year-old’s Twitter account. As a free agent, Moreau has been visiting NFL franchises in search of his next home, meeting with the Bengals last week.

During Moreau’s most recent visit in New Orleans, the Saints medical staff discovered that Moreau currently has Hodkin’s Lymphoma, a type of blood and immune system cancer. The Saints have now twice uncovered serious medical issues in routine physicals, the first dating back to 2017 when the team uncovered an aortic aneurysm in long snapper Jon Dorenbos.

Since 2018, we’ve seen players like Andre Hal, James Conner, and Eric Berry suffer from the same ailment. Hal was able to return to the field in the same year as his diagnosis, but he retired at the young age of 26. Berry and Conner both returned to have extended careers in the NFL after overcoming the cancer, with Conner still playing football to this day.

The Raiders drafted Moreau in the 2019 fourth round, and he played a sidekick role to Darren Waller during much of his career. Over the past two seasons, as Waller’s injuries piled up, Moreau became a regular pass-catching presence for the team. During the 2021 Raiders squad’s late-season run to the playoffs, Moreau hit or topped 50 receiving yards in three of the team’s final four games to help secure the unexpected postseason berth. He established new career-high marks in receptions (33) and yards (420), as he filled in for Waller in 2022.

Moreau’s free agency will be put on hold for now. The four-year veteran has the best wishes of PFR and our staff.

Bengals Meet With TE Foster Moreau

For the second straight offseason, the Bengals let their starting tight end walk in free agency. After C.J. Uzomah left for a Jets deal in 2022, Hayden Hurst joined the Panthers earlier this week.

Cincinnati’s search for a new first-string tight end led to a visit with former Darren Waller backup Foster Moreau. The four-year veteran met with Bengals brass, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. Moreau, 25, has played regularly for the Raiders due to Waller’s injuries over the past two seasons.

The Raiders trading Waller to the Giants (for a third-round pick) this week leaves them in need at the position. The Raiders having already extended Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow, to go along with Josh Jacobs‘ franchise tag and Jakobi Meyers‘ $11MM-per-year free agency agreement, likely will put them on the hunt for a low-cost veteran to potentially pair with a draft pick.

The Raiders have only Jesper Horsted and 2022 UDFA Cole Fotheringham on the roster at tight end. Moreau led Raiders tight ends with 33 receptions for 420 yards last season, when Waller’s lingering hamstring injury sidelined him for eight games. Moreau caught 30 passes for 373 yards in 2021, a season in which Waller missed six games.

The Bengals non-tendered Mitchell Wilcox as a restricted free agent last week, and 2019 second-round pick Drew Sample is also a free agent. Hurst, who signed a one-year deal with the team in 2022, joined the Panthers on a three-year deal worth $21.75MM ($13MM fully guaranteed) on Wednesday. As a result, the Bengals will likely add multiple tight ends to their equation this offseason.

A 2019 fourth-round pick out of LSU, Moreau joins Dalton Schultz and a few other notable names at the tight end spot in free agency. Following the Bears’ Thursday addition of ex-Packer Robert Tonyan, Friday brought more movement on the tight end market. The Patriots added Mike Gesicki, while the Browns signed Jordan Akins. The Chargers also brought back Donald Parham. These moves thinned the market, but Austin Hooper, Cameron Brate, Kyle Rudolph and Irv Smith Jr.. join Schultz in free agency.

Raiders’ Foster Moreau Done For Year

Foster Moreau‘s season is over. On Monday, head coach Jon Gruden announced that the fourth-round tight end will not play again in 2019.

Moreau exited Sunday’s game against the Titans with a knee injury, and it’s serious enough to rule him out for the rest of the slate. Before the injury, Moreau hauled in three passes for 14 yards, including his fifth touchdown reception of the year. In total, he finishes out with those five TDs, plus 21 catches for 174 hard-fought yards.

Moreau didn’t have a gaudy stat line as a rookie, but he did develop a strong rapport with Derek Carr, who gave him more and more red zone looks as the year went on. He’ll look to build off of that in 2020, when it really counts – the Raiders are, for all intents and purposes, out of playoff consideration. Their 6-7 record means that they’ll need more than just one Christmas miracle to qualify, even if they run the table.

The Raiders – sans Moreau – will face the Chargers in Week 16. On the plus side, they might have rookie receiver Hunter Renfrow back in action.

Injury Updates: Thielen, Moreau, Andrews, Guice, Chark

Here are the latest injury updates from around the league as you enjoy Sunday Night Football:

  • Adam Thielen missed another game with his hamstring issue Sunday, but he should be back out there soon. “All parties are optimistic” that the Vikings will have their star receiver when they play a pivotal Week 15 game against the Chargers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (Twitter link). Thielen has only played eight games this season, and in two of those he played only a handful of snaps.
  • The Raiders have been pretty banged up recently, and they took another blow during their crucial loss to the Titans. Tight end Foster Moreau went down with a knee injury, and Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said after the game he could be done for the season. Moreau doesn’t play a huge role as a pass-catcher, but he has had a couple of big games and has been playing around half of the team’s offensive snaps.
  • Ravens fans were left holding their breath when breakout tight end Mark Andrews left their victory over the Bills and didn’t return, but fortunately it doesn’t appear to be anything too serious. Andrews suffered a contusion between his knee and thigh a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, and the “indication is it’s nothing major” (Twitter link). That’s good news, but Baltimore does have a short week with a Thursday Night Football game against the Jets waiting. It wouldn’t be surprising if Andrews misses that one, but it doesn’t sound like it’ll be a longterm absence.
  • Derrius Guice has had brutal injury luck so far in his young NFL career, so it was terrible to see the Redskins running back go down with another knee issue during their loss to the Packers. Fortunately it seems like he might’ve dodged a bullet, as Tom Pelissero of NFL Network tweets that the initial diagnosis is an MCL sprain. It seems like Guice could miss some time and potentially the rest of the season, but fortunately it doesn’t appear to be anything long-term. Guice missed his entire rookie season due to a torn ACL that resulted in multiple infections, and then missed the first eight games of this season with a knee injury.
  • The Jaguars have been getting embarrassed weekly recently, and now things are getting even worse. On the heels of their 45-10 blowout loss to the Chargers, it looks like they could be without top receiver D.J. Chark moving forward. Chark left the game with an ankle injury, and his “left foot was in a protective boot and he left the locker room using a scooter” after the game, tweets Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com. Chark has been having a breakout year and has 881 yards with eight touchdowns, and it now seems like his sophomore campaign could be over.

Raiders Sign 5 Of 9 Draft Picks

The Raiders already have the majority of their draft class under contract. The following players have signed (all links to go Twitter):

Johnson, a converted wide receiver, notched two interceptions in each of his final two seasons at Houston. Heading into the draft, there was some buzz about him going as high as the second round, so the Raiders were undoubtedly thrilled to land him in the fourth.

“Boy, we love him,” GM Mike Mayock said after the draft. “We’re a press corner team. Jimmy O’Neil, our defensive backs coach, he’s happier than I’ve ever seen him. So now we have some long, press corners that go along with Gareon and everybody else that we have. Gareon Conley, Daryl Worley, and all our guys. Bottom line, we’re ecstatic with those corners.”

NFC Notes: Bridgewater, Saints, 49ers, Gragg, Buccaneers

Teddy Bridgewater had a dramatic free agency. He appeared all set to return to the Saints, when the Dolphins swooped in with a last second offer to be their starting quarterback. But in the end, he decided to return to New Orleans, potentially setting him up to take over for Drew Brees. In a recent interview with WWL Radio, Bridgewater elaborated on his decision to stay in the Big Easy, per Mike Triplett of ESPN.com. Bridgewater indicated it mostly had to do with how much he enjoyed his time in New Orleans, rather than about potential playing time.

“I told my agents every time that I talked to them that I haven’t stopped smiling since I arrived,” Bridgewater said. They made playing football fun, they made learning the game fun … and that’s something I appreciate. I was able to be part of that for 18 weeks last season, and it was nothing but positive things that occurred,” he continued. It sounds like Bridgewater has bought in to whatever the Saints are promising, and they clearly think very highly of him if they’re giving him $7.25MM to be their backup quarterback.

  • The 49ers brought in tight end Chris Gragg for a workout, a source told Matt Maioccio of NBC Sports (Twitter link). An Arkansas product, Gragg was taken by the Bills in the seventh round of the 2013 draft. He spent the next four years in Buffalo, then was with the Jets during the 2017 offseason. Gragg has struggled with injuries, missing the entire 2016 and 2017 seasons while hurt. He spent all of last year out of the league, and this is the first we’ve heard of him in a while. Gragg had his most productive season in 2015, when he caught 12 passes for 150 yards. He’s unlikely to make much of an impact even if San Francisco does opt to sign him.
  • The Buccaneers are making a historic move. Tampa Bay is hiring Maral Javadifar and Lori Locust as the first full-time female assistant coaches in franchise history, the team announced in a release. Locust will be an assistant defensive line coach, while Javadifar will be an assistant strength and conditioning coach. The Bucs are now the first team in NFL history to have two women as full-time coaches. New Bucs coach Bruce Arians has emphasized the need for greater diversity on NFL coaching staffs, and is now practicing what he preaches. Arians had said he would do something like this, so it isn’t surprising.
  • The Saints are reportedly close to a deal that would bring Jared Cook to New Orleans, but they might not be done adding to their tight end group. The team is “paying close attention” to LSU tight end Foster Moreau today at his pro day, Larry Holder of The Athletic is told (Twitter link). Moreau caught 22 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns at LSU last year.
