49ers, CB Anthony Averett Agree To Deal
An injury to one depth cornerback has resulted in the signing of another in San Francisco. The 49ers have agreed to a deal with Anthony Averett while placing Terrance Mitchell on IR, per a team announcement. 
Averett spent the first four seasons of his career with the Ravens, seeing a notable jump in playing time with each passing campaign. The former fourth-rounder served as a full-time starter in 2021, and he posted career-highs in tackles (54), interceptions (three) and pass deflections (11) that year.
Those numbers only earned him a one-year contract on the open market, though, and Averett spent the past season with the Raiders. The 28-year-old was limited to just seven games in his lone Vegas campaign, with thumb and toe injuries leading to IR stints. Averett put up lackluster numbers as part of a Raiders secondary which struggled throughout the season, leading to his lengthy stay on the open market this time around.
The Alabama product will now join a 49ers defense which is among the league’s best in the hopes of carving out a depth role. San Francisco has Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir in place as starters on the boundary, where Averett has spent the majority of his career. His 27 career starts would give the team notable experience if Averett is called into action, presuming he manages to cement a spot on the 53-man roster over the next several weeks.
Mitchell has seen time with six different teams during his eight years in the NFL, including the Titans last season. He was in position to add further to that list in San Francisco, but by being placed on IR he will sidelined for the entire 2023 campaign. The 31-year-old will turn his attention to rehab in advance of next year’s free agent period.
49ers Sign DE Taco Charlton
The 49ers of recent years have been known to generate some production from lower-profile defensive end additions, and the team will take a flier on a former first-round pick.
Taco Charlton signed with the 49ers on Tuesday. They are the ex-Cowboys first-rounder’s seventh team since leaving Dallas back in 2019. Charlton, 28, has been with the Dolphins, Chiefs, Steelers, Saints, Bears and Jaguars in the years since his Cowboys rookie deal did not pan out.
Last season, the Michigan alum stopped through Chicago and Jacksonville. The Bears used him as a backup in five games, while the Jags freed up a practice squad spot. Charlton does have 13 career starts, the most recent stretch of note coming in Miami four years ago. Charlton totaled five sacks with the Dolphins, who were not exactly going all out to win during that season.
The six-year veteran joins the 49ers’ Nick Bosa-fronted defensive end contingent. The 49ers have coaxed some decent work from the likes of Charles Omenihu, Samson Ebukam, Kerry Hyder and Arden Key in recent years. D-line coach Kris Kocurek‘s unit lost Omenihu (Chiefs) and Ebukam (Colts) in free agency. The Niners will expect 2022 second-rounder Drake Jackson to make a leap in Year 2, and Hyder re-signed with the team this offseason. The 49ers drafted Robert Beal in the fifth round, and they are also making a low-level bet on former Raiders top-five pick Clelin Ferrell.
With Ferrell, Bosa, Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw, the 49ers now have five first-rounders on their D-line. Though, a few of these players have obviously not justified those past investments. Charlton will attempt to assimilate here, with the 49ers’ P-squad a potential option as well. The team waived safety Avery Young to clear a roster spot.
Frank Gore Joins 49ers’ Front Office
Retired running back Frank Gore has joined the 49ers’ front office. Gore recently posted an Instagram picture of himself signing an agreement with the club (via Armando Salguero of Outkick.com on Twitter).
Gore, a third-round pick of the 49ers in 2005, announced his retirement last year. During his Bay Area tenure, the Miami (FL) alum established himself as one of the best, and most consistent, backs in the league. He racked up all five of his Pro Bowl nominations during that stretch, and once he assumed the starting role in 2006, he averaged over 1,160 yards per season on a robust 4.5 yards-per-carry average.
The 49ers will employ Gore as a personnel advisor, the team announced. Gore will serve as a special advisor to GM John Lynch along with the team’s football ops department.
The 40-year-old is the franchise’s all-time leading rusher by a wide margin, and though his career also included stints with the Colts, Dolphins, Bills, and Jets, he will be best-remembered for his time with the Niners. He signed a one-day contract to officially end his playing days as a member of the team, and it stands to reason that he would begin his front office endeavors with San Francisco. In his retirement announcment, he indicated that was his goal.
“I told [49ers CEO] Jed York that I always wanted to be a Niner, so we’re working on [the one-day contract] right now, and then we’re going to also sit down with me and my agent to talk about me working in the front office,” Gore said at the time. “I love looking at talent, and I love evaluating talent, and I love ball.”
Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com says that Gore has been with the team since spring as he seeks to acclimate himself to his new role, and that he sat in on pre-draft meetings. He will work with GM John Lynch, assistant GM Adam Peters, and their staff on player evaluation.
“He’ll go out on the road with some of our road scouts to make school calls,” Lynch said. “He is a smart football mind, and we want to tap into it and he wants to learn from us, so it’s a good thing for everyone involved.”
Gore finished his career with exacrly 16,000 rushing yards, which positions him behind only Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton on the all-time list.

Ben Burr-Kirven was a fifth-round pick by the Seahawks back in 2019, and he transformed into a key special teamer through his first two seasons in the NFL. However, he suffered a knee injury during the 2021 preseason that ended up wiping out that entire season. The issues persisted in 2022, and after spending that year on PUP, he was ultimately released in March. Coach Pete Carroll apparently reversed course and ended up bringing back the linebacker.
“He’s in a little bit of an experimental mode,” Carroll said earlier this year (via the team’s website). “The surgeries that he has had and the process he is going through, he is making progress. He’s always in the weight room with us. He’s always here working with a tremendous mentality. The nerve issues, really intricate stuff going on, so he’s had to have a really good attitude about it to stay in the fight and he is. He’s planning on getting back out there. So, we are going to give him every chance. If he can do it, this is going to be the place that he does it.”
Xavier Henderson was released today with an injury settlement, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post (via Twitter). The undrafted free agent landed on the physically unable to perform list earlier this week.

Among the additions on today’s list, defensive back A.J. Moore is the most notable. The defensive back spent four years with the Texans to begin his career, compiling 69 tackles in 55 games while primarily playing on special teams. The 27-year-old spent a chunk of last season on the Titans practice squad, and he ultimately got into one game with the big-league club.
Nick Bosa Not In Attendance At 49ers’ Training Camp
JULY 26: Bosa is indeed holding out, and on Wednesday the 49ers placed him on the reserve/did not report list, per the transactions wire. As fines begin to accumulate, it will be interesting to monitor how willing each side is to accelerate talks on what will be an enormous extension.
JULY 25: When training camp opens tomorrow for the 49ers, Nick Bosa is not expected to be a participant in team drills. Many expected that to come about as a result of a hold-in, but a full absence appears to be the likelier scenario. 
When speaking to the media on Tuesday, GM John Lynch acknowledged that he does not expect Bosa to be in attendance (Twitter link via David Lombardi of The Athletic). That would represent an even bolder negotiating step than the hold-in (during which players arrive at camp but decline to take part in practices) the reigning Defensive Player of the Year was thought to be contemplating.
Bosa is under contract this season on the fifth-year option. That will see him earn $17.9MM, but an extension would be worth considerably more given his track record. The former No. 2 pick led the league with 18.5 sacks last season, earning him a third Pro Bowl invitation and an All-Pro nod. That performance brought his career sack total to 43 in 51 games.
“I have not seen Nick,” Lynch said, adding that Bosa extension talks could be “a little more complex” than with other star players. “I would expect he’s not here to start off. We’re working. We’re having really good communication… We’re working diligently to try to come to an agreement. I think the challenge is you’re talking about a real special player. You’re talking about one of the better players in the league. You could argue that could simplify things, but I think at times it’s just finding that sweet spot.”
Lynch has previously stated his confidence in a deal getting worked out with Bosa, 25. A mega-contract has long been on the team’s radar, and for much of the offseason the top question has seemed simply to whether or not Bosa will eclipse T.J. Watt ($28MM per season) as the league’s highest-paid edge rusher and, perhaps, Aaron Donald ($31.67MM) as the league’s top-earning defender.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan added that, regardless of whether Bosa attends camp or not, he is unlikely to take the field before his contract is worked out. Bosa would be subject to $40K in daily fines if he remains absent, so movement in this situation could be coming soon.
49ers QB Brock Purdy Cleared To Practice
After suffering an arm injury during the NFC Championship Game and subsequently undergoing offseason surgery, Brock Purdy is ready to return to the practice field. General manager John Lynch announced today that the quarterback has been cleared to practice without any restrictions (per Tyler Dragon of USA Today). However, Lynch did caution that Purdy will be on a pitch count during training camp.
“Brock is cleared and ready to go. He’s been cleared and gonna be without restrictions,” Lynch said. “Now having said that, we’re sticking and adhering to a plan that’s been put in place for some time. He got after it the last couple days. We upped his pitch count.
“He’ll take off Day 1 but we believe in that plan. He’s cleared without restrictions, but there will be some time off due to pitch count. But the great news is Brock has worked his tail off and he’s ready to go.”
Purdy suffered a complete tear of his UCL, and while he managed to avoid Tommy John surgery, he still faced a lengthy rehab. While the 49ers added some extra insurance at the position in Sam Darnold, the team has also provided optimistic updates about Purdy throughout the offseason.
Last we heard, the quarterback had resumed throwing and was still on track to start in Week 1. Considering he’s set to be a participant for the start of 49ers training camp, we can probably still count on Purdy’s availability heading into the regular season.
The Mr. Irrelevant of the 2022 draft had a rookie season for the ages. He went 5-0 as a starter, completing 67.1 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He continued his strong play in the postseason, helping the 49ers win a pair of playoff games while tossing three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Considering his injury and lack of NCAA pedigree, it was uncertain if Purdy would retain his starting role heading into 2023. However, the 49ers have been adamant that the second-year QB is set to lead their depth chart, with Darnold serving as the primary backup. This means former third-overall pick Trey Lance is set to be the third-string quarterback heading into the 2023 campaign. The 23-year-old was limited to only two games last season before suffering a season-ending ankle injury, and with Purdy emerging late in the season, several teams reach out to the organization to check on Lance’s availability.

Isaiah Wilson hasn’t had an NFL gig since he was released by the Giants in January of 2022. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero tweets that the free agent lineman was slapped with a three-game suspension, but it’s uncertain what led to the temporary ban. Wilson was a first-round pick by the Titans in 2020 but got into only one game with Tennessee before getting shipped off to Miami. He was waived by Miami after showing up late to his team physical, and his practice squad stint with New York only lasted one season.
Max Garcia is an experienced addition to the Saints OL room, with the veteran having most recently started seven of his 12 appearances with the Cardinals in 2022. The 31-year-old has 59 games of starting experience, although Pro Football Focus was iffy on his production last year (63rd among 77 qualifying offensive guards).
Following a three-year stint in Cleveland, Terrance Mitchell has spent the past two seasons bouncing around the NFL. He got into 14 games (13 starts) for the Texans in 2021, finishing with 60 tackles and 10 passes defended. He spent the 2022 season with the Titans, finishing with 39 tackles in 11 games (five starts). 49ers fifth-round pick Darrell Luter Jr. is set to miss some time with a knee injury, providing Mitchell with an opportunity during training camp.

Vandenburgh, an undrafted rookie out of Illinois State, suffered an injury while training this offseason, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald (on Twitter). His placement on IR means he won’t be able to play for the Dolphins in 2023, but he could work his way onto the field with another squad. Bonner, meanwhile, is dealing with a minor illness and should be good to go later this week.
Miller, a third-round pick by the Saints, is still recovering from a meniscus injury that kept him off the field for TCU’s National Championship game. The Saints were always planning to ease in the running back during training camp, and it sounds like he’s still expected to be a full-go by the time the regular season comes around.
NFL Staff Updates: Cowboys, Falcons, Ravens, Lions, Chiefs, 49ers, Saints, Caminiti
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has made analytics a focus since joining the staff three years ago. That trend has continued into 2023 as Dallas made three hires this week, all of them in the analytics department. The Cowboys even took a page out of another sport’s book, as baseball has taken the lead in analytics over the past several years.
Bryant Davis will join the team as a strategic football analyst, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. For the last four years, Davis has been a research and development analyst for the Tampa Bay Rays of the MLB. Even in a sport that’s already more analytical than football, the Rays are one of the more advanced teams in their use of analytics.
Joining Davis as a strategic football analyst, according to Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports, is William Britt, a former Steelers staffer. Britt spent the past two seasons as a data analyst in Pittsburgh. Along with Davis and Sarah Mallepalle, this is the third person the Cowboys have hired to that role this offseason.
Finally, Dallas has convinced Max Lyons to return to the NFL in the role of football data engineer, according to Marcus Mosher of Pro Football Focus. Lyons has been out of the league for about ten years, founding and maintaining the website Gridiron Rank over that period. After working with the Eagles and Jaguars all the way back in 2012, he finally makes his return to the league.
Here are some other staff updates from around the NFL:
- After joining the Falcons as a scouting assistant a year ago, Hakeem Smith has been promoted to assistant pro scout, according to Neil Stratton of SucceedinFootball.com. Before coming to the NFL, Smith had spent three years working in the Pittsburgh Panthers recruiting department. Another scouting assistant hired last summer out of the college ranks, James McClintock has been promoted to a BLESTO scout for Atlanta, according to Stratton. McClintock’s time in the collegiate ranks was spent at Auburn, North Carolina, and Liberty.
- The Ravens are also reportedly hiring out of the college arena. According to Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports, Baltimore is expected to hire Adam Neuman as chief of staff and special advisor to the president. Not to be confused with Adam Neumann, the founder of WeWork, Neuman has served the last four years as chief of staff for strategy and operations for college football’s Big Ten conference.
- There’s been a promotion in the Lions‘ analytics department, according to Seth Walder of ESPN. After joining the team in 2020 as an analytics assistant, Caio Brighenti will now be in the role of football information manager. Brighenti has served as football information analyst for Detroit since March 2021.
- Chiefs‘ staffer Anthony McGee has finally climbed the ranks to become a pro scout, according to Stratton. After interning for the team in different roles from 2018 to 2021, McGee was hired in the personnel department as a player personnel assistant. Two years later, he’ll get his chance at a scouting role.
- A personnel staffer who got his chance as a pro scout last year, J.P. Crowley Hanlon of the 49ers has been promoted to West Coast area scout, according to Stratton. Crowley Hanlon joined San Francisco after gaining some experience with the Eagles and a sports agency.
- The Saints poached an analytics staffer from the Jets this week, according to Walder. After serving in New York as football analytics coordinator since 2020, Zach Stuart will head south to New Orleans as director of analytics.
- Lastly, the Patriots will lose a scout this summer, according to Stratton. Chris Caminiti will be departing for a role to head the Disruptive Sports firm’s coaching representation division. Caminiti has been an area scout for New England since 2021 after serving in operations and coaching roles previously with the Browns, Chiefs, and Chargers.
