Bills Sign Rookie QB Josh Allen

Josh Allen is officially in the fold. On Wednesday, Allen inked his four-year rookie contract with the Bills.

Allen’s negotiations took a while, but a deal was expected to happen this week as there were no signs of acrimony between him and the club. In accordance with his slot, Allen will earn about $21.2MM over the course of his four-year rookie contract.

The Bills went into the draft hoping to land their quarterback of the future, but refused to part with both of their first-round picks in order to make that happen. Their position paid off, as they were able to land the Buccaneers’ No. 7 pick in exchange for their No. 12 choice plus two second-round selections.

It’s expected that Allen will learn from the bench this year – at least, to start the year – behind free agent pickup A.J. McCarron. While Allen’s arm strength is definitely NFL caliber, the belief is that he’ll need some seasoning before taking the reins.

Bills Work Out DL Jared Crick

The Bills worked out defensive lineman Jared Crick on Monday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link).

Crick, 28, missed the entire 2017 campaign after undergoing back surgery in September, but he’s now apparently healthy and ready to find a new team. Last season was scheduled to be his second campaign with the Broncos, who signed him away from the Texans prior to the 2016 season. A starter from 2014-15 with Houston and in 2016 with Denver, Crick has appeared in 79 games and racked up 113 tackles during his six-year career.

Crick has exclusively played in 3-4 schemes during his NFL tenure, so a move to the Bills’ 4-3 look would mean something of a change. Still, he’d still be playing on the interior, and would join a Buffalo defensive tackle depth chart that includes Kyle Williams, free agent addition Star Lotulelei, rookie Harrison Phillips, and Adolphus Washington, among others. The Bills are playing 290-pound Trent Murphy at end in their 4-3, so it’s possible Crick could be allowed to see the edge, as well.

Bills Sign LB Keenan Robinson

The Bills have signed linebacker Keenan Robinson, according to a team announcement. The move fills the final spot on the Bills’ 90-man offseason roster.

Robinson has appeared in 58 games for the Giants and Redskins since 2012. He was a 13-game starter in 2013, but his playing time has been reduced ever since and he missed ten games last year due to a quad injury.

As an experienced player with special teams abilities, Robinson will make his case to make the Bills’ final cut. He’ll compete with fellow veteran linebackers Ramon Humber, Julian Stanford, and Deon Lacey for a place on the 53-man roster.

Robinson also drew interest from the Jaguars and Titans in the spring, but did not sign with either club.

Peter King: Bills Have Question Marks

Bills’ LeSean McCoy To Report To Camp

Bills running back LeSean McCoy is reporting to training camp with the rest of the team’s veterans on Wednesday, sources tell Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Unless McCoy’s status changes with the league, the team is expected to treat him like any other player.

McCoy, of course, is not quite like every other player. The running back’s ex-girlfriend was badly beaten in a home invasion earlier this month and she has intimated that McCoy may have played a role in the incident. If the allegations have merit, McCoy could face jail time and his NFL career could be in serious jeopardy.

McCoy, 30, denies any involvement, saying he was in Miami at the time of the invasion. But, his ex-girlfriend says the assailant demanded specific jewelry items from Cordon, items Graham said were gifts from McCoy to his ex and items he’d demanded back on “many occasions.” Court records over the past year show McCoy and Cordon argued over jewelry while additionally indicating McCoy attempted to have Cordon removed from the home and retrieve items that belonged to him.

A police investigation is ongoing, as is an NFL inquiry. So far, McCoy has not been charged with any crime and all parties involved are acting with that in mind.

Only Seven Unsigned NFL Draft Picks Remain

The overwhelming majority of this year’s NFL draft picks have signed their rookies deals. As training camp gets started, only the following seven players are without contracts:

For Mayfield, Darnold, Ward, Allen, and Smith, the holdup is reportedly tied to offset languagePlayers with offset language who are cut before the end of their rookie contract have the remaining guaranteed money reduced by whatever they earns elsewhere. Without offset language, players get to double dip. Top 10 picks expect to complete their rookie contracts, but it’s an important issue for agents nonetheless. There’s no sign of real acrimony between any of the Top 10 picks and their respective teams, though Smith has been staying away from the Bears.

In Edmunds’ case, it’s likely that his agent is haggling over guarantees in the fourth year of his rookie contract. First-rounders selected near the end of the first round often don’t get the entirety of their fourth season base salary guaranteed, but that’s an area where agents can press for a bit extra in talks. Seahawks rookie running back Rashaad Penny took less in fourth-year guarantees than last year’s No. 27 overall pick, talks dragged for several other players near the back end of the round. Others, such as Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley and Jaguars defensive tackle Taven Bryan have signed, but the Virginia Tech product is still in limbo.

Pettis is believed to be in line for a significant role this season, so it would behoove the Niners to get a deal done sooner rather than later.

Latest On Bills' QB Competition

Bills fans are anxiously looking forward to the inevitable ascension of Josh Allen, and Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News takes a look at the team’s quarterback competition with training camp fast approaching. A.J. McCarron and Nathan Peterman know that, if either of them start the season under center — and McCarron is generally seen as the favorite to open the year as the starting signal-caller — they would just be keeping the seat warm for Allen. Carucci notes that Allen’s natural talent was on full display throughout spring practices, and he adds that all three competitors have developed a friendship during their time together. The Buffalo News scribe examines each player’s case to start on Week 1, and he notably does not rule out any possibility at this juncture.

Latest On LeSean McCoy

The Bills report to training camp July 26, but it’s not certain LeSean McCoy will be there.

The matter of his possible involvement in a home invasion and assault of his ex-girlfriend continues, and the attorney for Delicia Cordon said her client “believes very strongly” McCoy was involved.

She absolutely thinks Mr. McCoy had something to do with it,” Tanya Mitchell Graham said in an email response to Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News. “She believes anyone else involved was likely contacted by someone else on behalf of Mr. McCoy.”

Skurski notes Graham wanted to clear up some confusion last week, when she said neither she nor Cordon had indicated directly McCoy was involved in an incident that left his ex-girlfriend badly bruised. Graham responded that her client still believes McCoy was involved to some degree.

McCoy, 30, denied he was involved, saying he was in Miami at the time of the invasion. But Graham previously said the assailant demanded specific jewelry items from Cordon, items Graham said were gifts from McCoy to his ex and items he’d demanded back on “many occasions.” Court records over the past year show McCoy and Cordon argued over jewelry while additionally indicating McCoy attempted to have Cordon removed from the home and retrieve items that belonged to him. A police investigation is ongoing, as is an NFL inquiry.

An eviction hearing was scheduled to take place on Aug. 14, Skurski reports. Cordon has since moved out of the house, Graham said.

I mentioned that I had a conversation with our client about the ‘criminal burden of proof,’ which is a higher standard than a civil burden of proof, and ‘probable cause’ – legal terms,” Graham said, via Skurski. “At this time, there is circumstantial evidence, which is not significant enough probable cause for an arrest; so, I said you can’t blame Mr. McCoy without additional evidence.

This matter is under investigation, and we should allow the City of Milton (Ga.) Police and their detectives to do their job. I think either the way I said that, or the way it was interpreted caused some confusion to suggest that my client was backtracking. She is not. I was just trying to explain the legalities of the incident.”

Due to the ongoing investigation, McCoy could be a candidate for the commissioner’s exempt list. This would sideline him indefinitely from the Bills.

Bills GM On Allen, Edmunds

The Bills began discussing the idea of taking a quarterback near the top of the 2018 draft all the way back in May 2017 when general manager Brandon Beane was hired, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com.

When it came time for the draft, the Bills managed to move up for Allen by sending their No. 12 pick and two second-round picks to the Bucs for the No. 7 choice. After that, the Bills doubted that they would be able to land Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who was another one of their top targets. Luckily for them, the Raiders opted to bolster their offensive line with the No. 15 pick, giving them an opportunity to trade up for Baltimore’s pick at No. 16.

The Bills are happy with how things turned out in the first round, but it may take a while before we see how this draft class pans out, particularly when it comes to Allen.
