Patriots Preparing For Josh McDaniels To Leave

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, the Patriots are preparing for Josh McDaniels to leave for a head coaching gig this offseason.

Of course, as we learned last offseason, this won’t mean a whole lot until McDaniels is formally introduced and/or starts performing head coaching tasks for his new team. Last year, McDaniels was announced as the head coach of the Colts before he suddenly decided to stick around with New England. At the time, it was assumed that the 42-year-old was going to stay with the Patriots until Bill Belichick retired, at which time McDaniels would take over the reigns.

There may be a slight difference this time around. As Florio writes, the Patriots offensive coordinator “will only interview with teams that he’d be willing to coach.” This sentiment was emphasized by McDaniels accepting an interview with the Packers and declining an interview with the Bengals. As Florio points out, reports have indicated that there’s also mutual interest between McDaniels and the Browns.

Despite his fiasco with Indy, McDaniels has still proven to be a relatively hot commodity on the head coaching circuit. McDaniels had underwhelming results as the head coach of the Broncos, but he’s seen a lot more success during his two stints as the Patriots offensive coordinator. New England made him one of the highest paid coordinators last offseason, but we heard back in December that McDaniels had hired a new agent and was ready to explore new opportunities.

2019 NFL Head Coaching Search Tracker

Several NFL teams are currently hunting for a new head coach, and amidst reports about interview requests and potential candidates, it’s easy to lose track of the latest updates in the shuffle. So we’ll use this space – which will be updated until every team has hired a new head coach – to keep track of the most recent news and rumors. It can be found on the right-hand sidebar under “PFR Features.”

Listed below are the head coaching candidates that have been linked to each of the teams with vacancies, along with their current status. If and when other teams decide to make head coaching changes, they’ll be added to this list. Here’s the current breakdown:

Packers To Interview Todd Monken

The Packers’ search to find Mike McCarthy‘s replacement has become quite extensive. Another candidate is now in the mix.

Todd Monken will interview for the job on Saturday night, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com (on Twitter). This makes nine candidates (so far) on Green Bay’s interview list.

Recently the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator, Monken’s docket is filling up fast. He has two interviews scheduled for next week, with the Bengals on Monday and Jets on Tuesday, Fowler adds.

While the Bucs again disappointed, their offense could be counted on for production. Tampa Bay ranked third in total yardage (and 12th in points) this season. No team in the franchise’s 43-season history had previously finished in the top three offensively.

The 2018 season was a critical one for Monken, as he took over play-calling duties for most of the campaign. Dirk Koetter had called plays previously, and did so again briefly this season, but Monken put himself on the map with his work in 2018.

The 52-year-old coach has spent most of his tenure on college staffs but did coach the Jaguars’ wide receivers from 2007-10. After serving as Oklahoma State’s OC for the following two years and then Southern Miss’ head coach over the next three, Monken became the Bucs’ OC. Though, he still served as Tampa Bay’s wideouts coach from 2016-17. Koetter rearranged Monken’s responsibilities in the 2018 offseason, allowing him to focus solely on his OC duties.

Packers To Interview Adam Gase

The Packers are expected to interview former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase for their head coaching vacancy, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein tweets. That interview is expected to come on Sunday, the same day the team interviews Tennessee’s Matt LaFleur, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky hears (Twitter link).

Gase, who went 23-25 with the Dolphins in three seasons, wrapped up two interviews this week after meeting with the Cardinals and Jets. The 40-year-old Gase is an innovative offensive mind who rose to fame as the orchestrator of Denver’s dynamic offense during Peyton Manning‘s tenure with the team. In three years as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator, the team posted a pair of top-five offenses, including a No. 1-overall ranking in 2013 when Manning set the records for passing yards and touchdowns in a season. That type of offensive mind fits the mold of what the Packers are expected to want in a head coach to pair with Aaron Rodgers.

According to Pro Football Rumors’ head coaching search tracker, Gase will push the Packers’ number of interviews that are scheduled and expected to near double digits. That search includes other offensive minds like Josh McDaniels and Dan Campbell, as well as a host of former head coaches like Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano.

Packers To Interview Brian Flores

  • Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores has a busy week lined up, as he’s drawn interest from not only the Broncos, Browns, Dolphins, and Packers. It’s still unclear if/when Flores will interview with Cleveland, but he’ll meet with Green Bay on Friday, tweets Demovsky. Packers management is scheduled to fly to the New England area that day to sit down with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, so they’ll stick around to meet with Flores. Flores is also scheduled to interview for the Miami gig on Thursday and Friday, while Mike Klis of 9News reports (via Twitter) the Broncos will fly to New England to sit down with Flores on Saturday (previous reports had indicated Denver would meet with Flores on Monday).

Packers To Interview Saints OC Pete Carmichael

Sean Payton‘s longtime right-hand man, Pete Carmichael has not been a fixture on recent coaching carousels. The Packers, though, want to amend that.

Green Bay requested an interview with New Orleans’ offensive coordinator, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports (on Twitter). The meeting will take place Saturday, ESPN.com’s Mike Triplett reports (on Twitter).

Carmichael has been with the Saints since Payton’s 2006 arrival, ascending to the role of offensive coordinator in advance of New Orleans’ 2009 Super Bowl season. The 47-year-old assistant is the league’s longest-tenured OC. Payton being the architect of the Saints’ perennially explosive offenses, teams have not made Carmichael a priority in coaching searches.

The Packers have already interviewed Chuck Pagano and Jim Caldwell and are scheduled to meet with Saints tight ends coach Dan Campbell, Titans OC Matt LaFleur, Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores and Patriots OC Josh McDaniels. Interim HC Joe Philbin is also set to get a look. They are also trying to land a meeting with Northwestern HC Pat Fitzgerald.

New Orleans’ offenses have ranked in the top 10 in both scoring and total yardage in nine of Carmichael’s 10 years, the one outlier being an 11th-place points ranking in 2010. During Payton’s Bountygate suspension season, 2012, the Saints ranked second in yardage and scored the third-most points.

Packers To Interview Joe Philbin

The Packers will give interim head coach Joe Philbin a chance at removing the interim tag. The two sides will have their official interview on Thursday or Friday, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com (on Twitter).

Philbin is in the mix, but he’ll have to outshine a number of impressive candidates to walk away with the job. Already, the Packers have scheduled sit-downs with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Saints assistant head coach Dan Campbell, and Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur. After meeting with Philbin, Packers brass will hit the road to meet with each of their coaches. Campbell and McDaniels, of course, will be taking time from their playoff preparations to speak with Green Bay.

Philbin took over as the Packers’ interim head coach following Mike McCarthy‘s dismissal in early December. the Packers went 2-2 in Philbin’s final games, wrapping up an immensely disappointing season. Between his four games as the Packers’ interim leader and three years plus as the Dolphins’ head coach (2012-2015), Philbin owns a career 26-30 record.

Packers To Meet With Matt LaFleur

The Packers and Matt LaFleur have set a date for their interview. Green Bay will meet with the Titans offensive coordinator on Sunday, according to Paul Kuharsky of PaulKuharsky.com

As of this writing, LaFleur is one of seven known candidates for the position. Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano have already interviewed while Josh McDaniels, Brian Flores, Mike Munchak, and Dan Campbell are on deck.

LaFleur spent the 2017 season as McVay’s OC, though McVay called the Rams’ plays. LaFleur, though, made the move to play-caller in 2018 with Tennessee. He joins Rams QBs coach Zac Taylor and tight ends coach Shane Waldron as current or recent McVay assistants to receive meeting requests. McVay may be in his early 30s, but he may soon wind up with an impressive coaching tree of his own.

LaFleur, 39, called plays for a Titans team that had trouble keeping Marcus Mariota healthy. The Titans struggled without their starting QB at 100% and finished the year ranked 27th in points and 25th in total yards. Plagued by an elbow issue, Mariota threw just 11 touchdown passes in 2018.

Packers Still Pursuing Pat Fitzgerald

Despite Pat Fitzgerald emphatically proclaiming he was staying at Northwestern following Monday night’s Holiday Bowl win, the Packers are still going to make an attempt to interview him, Tom Silverstein and Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report. The Packers were expected to reach out with an interview request, with GM Brian Gutekunst expressing great admiration for the Northwestern coach and Packers president Mark Murphy having hired Fitzgerald when he was at Northwestern, but nothing has transpired yet. The 13-year Wildcats leader said Northwestern was “not going anywhere” and Chicago was “home forever.” Mike McCarthy made more than $8MM last season, according to Silverstein and Owczarski, who suspect the Packers may have to offer at least that — despite Fitzgerald having never coached in the NFL — to entice the 44-year-old college coach. The Packers have thus far requested interviews with Josh McDaniels, Mike Munchak, Dan Campbell, Matt LaFleur and Brian Flores.
