Raiders To Explore Guard Trade Market

The Raiders will be without their longest-tenured offensive lineman for around two months. They appear set to look at outside options in the interim.

Gabe Jackson‘s knee injury will mean Oakland goes into this season without either of the guard starters it deployed primarily for the past three seasons, with the team having already traded Kelechi Osemele to New York in March. Already set to be without Richie Incognito for two weeks because of a suspension, the Raiders are expected to explore the guard trade market, Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal tweets.

Incognito arrived shortly after the draft, with Jon Gruden advocating for another guard to replace Osemele instead of the team’s in-house options. At right guard presently, depth signing Jordan Devey will receive the first shot at replacing Jackson, Gruden said (via Gehlken, on Twitter). Devey has started just four games over the past three seasons, each coming as a member of the Chiefs.

Fourth-year UDFA Denver Kirkland is also in that mix; Denzelle Good remains on the team’s active/PUP list. Jackson hurt his knee during practice this week. The Raiders have more than $18MM in cap space, but with Jackson and Incognito potentially set to debut together by October, it would be interesting to see them give up too much to acquire a stopgap guard.

Still attached to the $10MM-AAV deal he signed in 2017, Jackson has started 72 games for the Raiders since arriving as a 2014 third-round pick. He finished last season on IR and would be a candidate for an IR-return player to start this season, but that would only be the case if the Raiders believed his timetable would involve a return closer to November rather than October.

Chiefs Place C Jordan Devey On IR

The Chiefs placed center Jordan Devey and linebacker Terrance Smith on injured reserve. In related moves, the club promoted center Jimmy Murray and tight end Deon Yelder from the practice squad to the active roster.

Devey has been starting at center for the last two weeks in place of the injured Mitch Morse, so his loss is no small matter for Kansas City. If Morse is unable to play on Sunday, the Chiefs may have to shift Cameron Erving to the middle and move the recently-signed Jeff Allen into the starting left guard spot. Murray gives the Chiefs another option at center, but the UDFA has yet to play his first NFL down.

The Chiefs and their banged up offensive line will face the Broncos in Week 8.

Here are the today’s minor moves.

  • With a ruptured Achilles’ tendon set to end Eric Berry‘s season, the Chiefs officially placed the eighth-year safety on IR Saturday. The team also signed offensive lineman Jordan Devey and safety Steven Terrell. Both Devey and Terrell went to training camp with Kansas City. The Chiefs cut both last weekend. Terrell started in five games as Earl Thomas‘ replacement with the Seahawks last season.
  • The Colts cut safety Earl Wolff with an injury settlement, Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets. A 2013 fifth-round Eagles pick, Wolff hasn’t played in a regular-season game since 2014. The Redskins signed Wolff to a reserve/futures deal in January but waived him earlier this month.
  • To fill Matt Jones‘ roster spot, the Colts promoted guard Adam Redmond from their practice squad. Redmond signed with the Colts as a UDFA in 2016. He’ll join Deyshawn Bond as a center option for the team, which will be without starter Ryan Kelly to start the season.
  • For now, the Broncos won’t go with a two-Peko setup on their defensive line. They waived defensive tackle Kyle Peko, Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post tweets. The Broncos signed Domata Peko to be their starting nose tackle and have until Sunday afternoon to replace his cousin on the roster in advance of their Monday-night game. Kyle Peko missed time this summer because of an injury.
  • The Lions signed offensive lineman Storm Norton off their practice squad and waived linebacker Nick Bellore, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports. Rothstein adds this news could mean tackle Corey Robinson — brought off the PUP list last week — may not be ready to play in Week 1. Robinson missed the preseason with an injury.
  • The Saints released outside linebacker Bryan Braman off IR with an injury settlement, Caplan reports (on Twitter).

Chiefs Cut RB C.J. Spiller

This marks the second time inside of a week that Spiller has been cut by Kansas City. The veteran missed the team’s initial 53-man cut and was re-signed the same weekend only to get released hours in advance of the season opener.

Spiller and Devey’s contracts would have become guaranteed for the entire season if they were on the 53-man roster for the Chiefs’ first game, Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star notes. If they’re not scooped up by another team, the Chiefs could conceivably re-sign both players on Friday for the same deals, except non-guaranteed. That’s right – Spiller could wind up being released three times by the Chiefs within one week and back with the team in time for Week 2.

As of this writing, Kareem Hunt and Charcandrick West are the Chiefs’ only true running backs on the roster, not counting fullback Anthony Sherman. The Chiefs may look to promote undrafted Indiana product Devine Redding from the practice squad to round out the group.

Spiller, a first-round pick back in 2010, hasn’t had a truly productive season since 2013.

Chiefs Sign Knile Davis

Knile Davis is back in Kansas City, as the team announced (via Twitter) that they’ve signed the veteran running back. The team also promoted defensive end David King to the active roster. To make room, the team placed offensive guard Parker Ehinger on the injured reserve and waived offensive lineman Jordan Devey.

Knile DavisIt’s been a tumultuous two weeks for Davis. The 25-year-old was traded to the Packers in mid-October, but he only got five carries in two games before being waived last week. The running back was claimed by the Jets the next day, but he barely lasted three hours as the team opted to sign free agent running C.J. Spiller. In six games this season, Davis has compiled only three yards on six carries, and he’s added another four receptions for 18 yards. The former third-rounder had his best season in 2014, when he ran for 463 yards and six touchdowns. With Jamaal Charles out for the season and Spencer Ware sidelined with a concussion, the team will have to rely on Davis, Charcandrick West, and Bishop Sankey to lead their running game.

King, a seventh-round pick in 2013, has eight NFL appearances under his belt. The 26-year-old has collected four tackles and 1.5 sacks, and he’ll likely compete with Kendall Reyes and Dadi Nicolas for snaps on the defensive line.

We learned earlier this week that Ehinger, a fourth-round rookie, would miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. The Cincinnati product ultimately started four games for the Chiefs. Meanwhile, Devey made one appearance for Kansas City this season. By cutting the former undrafted free agent, the Chiefs will be rolling with only Jah Reid and Bryan Witzmann as their back-up lineman.

Chiefs Waive Rakeem Nunez-Roches, Promote Jordan Devey

Following one-plus seasons with the organization, the Chiefs have cut bait with a former draft pick. Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star tweets that the team has waived defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches, replacing him with offensive lineman Jordan Devey.

Rakeem Nunez-RochesThe Southern Mississippi standout was selected by the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2015 draft. Born in Dangriga, Belize, Nunez-Roches was the first Belizean-born NFL player. The 23-year-old played in seven games as a rookie, compiling only four tackles. The defensive tackle didn’t make an appearance during the Chiefs’ season-opener.

The team will be filling Nunez-Roches’ roster spot with Devey, who was experience playing all over the offensive line. The 28-year-old lineman has made 22 NFL appearances (13 starts) since going undrafted out of Memphis in 2013. The lineman won a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2013, and he started four games for the team in 2014. Last summer, Devey was traded to the 49ers, and he proceeded to start a career-high nine games for the squad. The lineman was claimed by the Chiefs earlier in the 2016 offseason, and he ultimately made the team’s practice squad.
