Dolphins To Sign LB K.J. Britt
The Dolphins are set to make their first outside addition at the linebacker spot this offseason. K.J. Britt has agreed to a one-year deal with Miami, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. 
Britt played out his rookie contract with the Buccaneers, so this pact will allow him to remain in Florida for at least one more season. The former fifth-rounder primarily played on special teams during his first three seasons with the team, but late in the 2023 campaign he emerged as the Bucs’ preferred defensive option compared to Devin White. The latter’s expected free agent departure last offseason paved the way for a starting gig in Britt’s case.
Logging a 65% snap share – by far the largest of his career – the 25-year-old posted 72 tackles in 2024. He helped form an effective tandem with Lavonte David as a result of that production, but while the longtime Buccaneer has worked out another Tampa deal Britt will be on the move this spring. He will look to carve out a first-team gig in Miami.
The Dolphins added Jordyn Brooks in free agency last offseason, and he remains on the books through 2026. Miami also re-signed Tyrel Dodson on a two-year deal yesterday, and after staring three games last season he will be in the mix for a first-team role moving forward. Britt will aim to compete for playing time in that regard, but at a minimum he will provide the Dolphins with a veteran special teams presence.
Miami ranked ninth against the run in 2024, and with Brooks and Dodson still in place expectations will be high for a repeat of that strong play at the second level this coming season. If Britt manages to play a notable role in that effort, he will set himself up for a more lucrative deal on the open market next spring.
NFC South Notes: Panthers, Saints, Dennis
Bryce Young may have entered the game in place of Andy Dalton during the Panthers‘ Week 5 loss to the Bears, but head coach Dave Canales told media that Dalton would remain the team’s starting quarterback moving forward.
Canales explained that the quarterback change was more about limiting Dalton’s exposure behind an injured Carolina offensive line than it was about giving Young another opportunity to earn the starting gig, according to Joe Person of The Athletic. The Panthers lost starting center Austin Corbett and starting right tackle Taylor Moton to injuries during Sunday’s loss, forcing Canales to prioritize Dalton’s health with Carolina trailing by four possessions.
“We had a couple of injuries on the offensive line and wanting to get [Young] in there, get some live reps,” Canales said. “It was something where I wanted to get Andy out of there and just give Bryce an opportunity to continue some football in there while we had time.”
Canales confirmed that Dalton would start for the Panthers in Week 6, though it’s worth noting that he made a similar declaration about Young’s job safety after the former No. 1 overall pick struggled in Week 2 against the Chargers. Canales declined to offer any insight on the Panthers’ long-term plans for Young, and though his history as a quarterback-friendly coach suggests he could still get the best out of his young signal-caller, rumblings about a 2025 trade have surfaced. The Panthers rebuffed four trade inquiries already.
Here is the latest from the NFC South:
- The Saints ruled tight end Taysom Hill out of their Monday night matchup with the Chiefs due to a rib injury. Hill missed the Saints’ Week 3 matchup against the Eagles with a chest injury, but returned to full practice participation the following week. He then sustained fractured ribs against the Falcons in Week 4, sidelining him for Week 5 and potentially beyond. Dennis Allen (via ESPN.com’s Katherine Terrell) declined to say how may ribs Hill fractured. Foster Moreau and Juwan Johnson will take on a bigger role in New Orleans’ offense with Hill sidelined, but his versatility will be difficult for offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak to replace. He may have to take some Hill-focused plays out of his playbook entirely with his unique offensive weapon absent from the lineup.
- The Saints‘ offense stunned the NFL with its explosive start to the year, dropping 91 points on their first two opponents before cooling off in Weeks 3 and 4. Head coach Dennis Allen worked with Kubiak to simplify the offense for Derek Carr after years of complexity became ingrained in New Orleans’ system under Sean Payton and Drew Brees. Carr is making fewer adjustments at the line of scrimmage, while Kubiak has dialed up play action at a league-leading frequency.
- Second-year Buccaneers linebacker SirVocea Dennis is not expected to return from injured reserve anytime soon, per Greg Auman of The Athletic. Dennis injured his shoulder over the summer but played in Tampa Bay’s first three games before leaving in Week 4 after aggravating the issue. The Buccaneers placed Dennis on IR on October 1, sidelining him through at least Week 8. Tampa Bay has relied on K.J. Britt to take on Dennis’ vacated snaps after the duo began the year splitting time on the field alongside veteran Lavonte David.
- The Falcons restructured the contract of veteran defensive tackle David Onyemata recently, per ESPN’s Field Yates, creating $4.85MM of cap space. Onyemata remains tied to the three-year, $35MM deal he signed in March 2023. This update balloons the DT’s 2025 cap number to $16.93MM. For 2024, however, Atlanta now has just under $10MM in cap space, ranking 20th in the NFL.
Buccaneers’ K.J. Britt In Lead For Three-Down LB Role
Although the Buccaneers’ extensive offseason retention effort makes receiving contributions from rookie-contract players pivotal this year, it would not have cost the team too much to authorize a second Devin White deal. The former first-round pick fetched a one-year, $4MM accord from the Eagles.
For base value, White’s contract matches Baker Mayfield‘s 2023 Bucs agreement. The 2023 offseason brought a trade request from the former top-five pick, who sought an extension near the top of the market. Like Mayfield, White did not build momentum in a fifth-year option season. The inconsistent linebacker will attempt to bounce back in Philadelphia, as the Bucs aim to give his job to the player who pushed him late last season.
K.J. Britt is the lead candidate to play alongside Lavonte David this season, Buccaneers.com’s Scott Smith writes. Todd Bowles views the 2021 fifth-round pick as a clear option to fill the role White held for much of his first five seasons. As Britt (four career starts) enters a contract year, he will have the chance to establish himself as a dependable starter.
“Obviously, he can play all three downs but we have so many packages and guys to move around,” Bowles said. “It’s a little early to determine who will be on what [package]. In one week he could be, in one week he may not be. It depends on who we’re playing and what we have available. But he’s ready to play all three downs.
“I love the maturity. He’s grasping the mental part of the game and becoming a leader of that defense along with Lavonte and [Antoine Winfield Jr.] and Vita [Vea]. We’re kind of happy where he’s progressing right now.”
Britt logged his first career starts last season, and while he saw extended time down the stretch and began to cut into White’s playing time, the Auburn alum played just 252 defensive snaps in 2023 (after logging a combined 73 from 2021-22). Britt’s third NFL season included 29 tackles, though he closed the campaign with a 12-tackle performance in Tampa Bay’s divisional-round loss to Detroit. The Bucs used Britt as a starter in both playoff games, and he out-snapped White by a considerable margin (59-14) in the team’s Lions rematch.
The Bucs re-signed Mayfield, David and Mike Evans and extended Winfield at a DB-record number. They have Tristan Wirfs in position to command an NFL-record tackle contract as well. With Mayfield no longer tied to that “prove it” deal, the team will need low-cost starters to step up. Britt, whose starter starter stretch began as a White foot injury — which became a talking point due to an injury reporting storyline — shut him down for three weeks. Rumors about White losing his job to Britt, however, emerged. And the former Pro Bowler entered free agency to little fanfare in March.
SirVocea Dennis, a 2023 fifth-rounder, logged the fourth-most snaps among Bucs LBs last season (104). He would profile as the top challenger, with the team not adding a veteran or a replacement via the draft. With the Bucs cutting the cord on the first player they drafted in Bowles’ tenure with the team, they will first see if Britt proves capable of being David’s latest ILB sidekick. Britt proving worthy of that role in 2024 will set him up for an extended look come 2025 — should the Bucs let him reach free agency.

Ellefson came off IR just last week and did not play in the Vikings’ matchup against the Jets. A nagging groin injury will send the third-year tight end back to IR. Although the new IR rules allow for players to be activated twice from IR, Minnesota’s injury-return math may come into play by the time Ellefson’s second activation window opens (Week 18).
In Darden, Browns snagged the NFL’s punt-return yards leader. The 2021 Bucs fourth-rounder has not seen much action on offense, with Tampa Bay oozing experience at the receiver position. But he has been Tampa Bay’s primary punt returner. Darden has totaled 330 punt-return yards this season. A 2021 third-round pick, Schwartz sustained a concussion that has sent him to IR. Ragland has spent the past month on the Raiders’ taxi squad. The Browns are the former second-round pick’s fifth team in four seasons; the ex-Jets draftee was with the Chiefs, Lions and Giants from 2019-21. After losing Anthony Walker and Jacob Phillips earlier this year, the Browns moved Sione Takitaki to IR with an ACL tear this week.
A rotational cog for the Saints, Colts and Chiefs during his five-year career, Stallworth played only 14% of Kansas City’s defensive snaps this season. He committed a third-down roughing-the-passer penalty during a Bengals touchdown drive in Week 13. The Texans had already used one of their injury activations on Dwumfour; the 1-10-1 team has three remaining. Greenard, who led the 2021 Texans with eight sacks, has been on the shelf since going down with a calf injury in an October practice.
