Colts Cut Austin Howard, Reach 53-Man Roster
The Colts are at the 53-man roster max after making a bundle of transactions, including the release of offensive tackle Austin Howard.
[RELATED: Colts Cut John Simon]
The Colts invested $1.3MM guaranteed in Howard, but he was medically cleared until late July and struggled in camp and during the preseason. The Colts dangled him in trade talks this week, but there were no takers for him.
Despite his issues this summer, Howard had a solid 2017 with the Ravens and graded as Pro Football Focus’ No. 36 offensive tackle. If healthy, he could draw interest from other teams.
The Colts also placed defensive end Chris McCain, linebacker Jeremiah George, defensive end Anthony Johnson, and tight end Ross Travis on injured reserve.
Here’s a look at the rest of the Colts’ moves:
Waived:
- TE Mo Alie-Cox
- K Mike Badgley
- CB Juante Baldwin
- DT Brandon Banks
- C Deyshawn Bond
- G Nick Callender
- LB Brandon Chubb
- CB Lashard Durr
- WR Reece Fountain
- WR Cobi Hamilton
- WR Steve Ishmael
- WR Seantavius Jones
- DT Tomasi Laulile
- DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches
- CB Henre’ Toliver
- G Jeremy Vujnovich
- QB Phillip Walker
- CB D.J. White
- WR Kasen Williams
Last year, Bond ascended to the starting center job when Ryan Kelly broke his foot late in training camp. Unfortunately, a torn quad landed him on IR in October. This year, he’ll be looking for work elsewhere.
Alie-Cox was a former basketball player looking to transition to tight end. Although Antonio Gates and others have successfully made the jump, Alie-Cox has yet to find similar success.
In addition to the aforementioned moves, the Colts also waived the following players with an injury designation. If they clear waivers, then they revert to the Colts’ Injured Reserve list:
- LB Tyrell Adams
- WR K.J. Brent
- T Tyreek Burwell
- S Chris Cooper
- S T.J. Green
- WR Krishawn Hogan
- CB Robert Jackson
- S Ronald Martin
- S Robenson Therezie
- WR James Wright
Minor NFL Transactions: 11/6/17
Today’s minor moves:

San Francisco 49ers

Chiefs Move Tamba Hali To Active Roster
The Chiefs are ready to fire up Tamba Hali. The outside linebacker has been moved to the active roster and will dress this weekend against the Cowboys. To make room, defensive back D.J. White has been placed on waivers.
Hali began the year on the PUP list, ruling him out for the first half of the season. It was first reported on Nov. 2 that Hali would begin practicing, but there was a hiccup in the plans. Coincidentally or not (probably not), Hali has been given the green light to play after an adjustment to his deal for the 2018 season.
The new contract calls for Hali to make an extra $250K in signing bonuses, but also shifts $1MM in 2018 base pay to a roster bonus due on March 1. That might seem like a minor change, but it will result in the Chiefs making a decision on Hali before the start of free agency. If the Chiefs kick Hali to the curb, he’ll have an opportunity to go elsewhere while the free agent cash is still flowing.
Hali, 34, appeared in all 16 games for the Chiefs in 2016, but he only logged two official starts.
Chiefs Sign Six Draft Picks, Seven UDFAs
The Chiefs have officially locked up the majority of their nine-player draft class, having signed six selections to contracts, the team announced. Along with the previously reported Chris Jones (second-round pick), the Chiefs inked the followers players to deals:
- 4-105: Parker Ehinger, OL (Cincinnati)
- 4-126: Demarcus Robinson, WR (Florida)
- 5-162: Kevin Hogan, QB (Stanford)
- 6-178: D.J. White, DB (Georgia Tech)
- 6-203: Dadi Nicolas, LB (Virginia Tech)
The Chiefs traded out of the first round this year, making third-round defensive back Keivarae Russell their most significant unsigned draft pick as of now. The team also officially signed seven undrafted free agents, including three cornerbacks:
- G Jake Bernstein (Vanderbilt)
- C Ben Clarke (Hawaii)
- CB Vernon Harris (Dartmouth)
- CB Tre Jones (Mount Union)
- WR Mitch Mathews (BYU)
- CB Shak Randolph (SMU)
- LB Terrance Smith (Florida State) [15K bonus, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle]
Additionally, Kansas City waived Lithuanian-born linebacker Tautvydas Kieras, per a team announcement (Twitter link).
