Broncos G Graham Glasgow To Miss Week 4
Sunday’s Ravens-Broncos matchup will feature a host of unavailable starters on both sides. Denver may be without both its starting guards. One of them, Graham Glasgow, did not practice this week and has already been ruled out.
This will be Glasgow’s second missed game in three weeks. The veteran guard missed Week 2 with a heart issue but returned last week. A knee injury sustained against the Jets will keep Glasgow out against the Ravens, who are also missing multiple O-line starters. The Broncos signed Glasgow in free agency last year.
The Broncos might need to use two backup guards Sunday. Dalton Risner also left the team’s Week 3 win, with an ankle injury, and managed only a limited practice Friday. Netane Muti, a sixth-round pick last year, has been the team’s first guard off the bench. Rookie third-rounder Quinn Meinerz, a Division III product, followed Muti into action last week. Risner is questionable to play Sunday. Muti has shown promise in limited action this season, grading as Pro Football Focus’ No. 5 overall guard.
Denver remains down three defensive starters — Bradley Chubb, Josey Jewell, Ronald Darby — and Jerry Jeudy. The team lost slot receiver K.J. Hamler for the season last week.
Some Broncos Players To Attend Workouts
The Broncos became the first team to take NFLPA president J.C. Tretter up on a proposed boycott of the voluntary offseason program. But some within the team’s ranks do intend to report.
Third-year guard Dalton Risner has trained at the team’s facility this offseason and plans to be there Monday, when the Broncos’ offseason program is set to begin.
“I’ve stayed quiet through this whole process, but yeah, I’m showing up Monday,” Risner said, via Mike Klis of 9News. “I know there’s some other guys who are showing up as well. I’ve been at the facility all offseason. … If there wasn’t an offseason bonus, it wouldn’t matter. I’m coming off my second year. I have a lot of work to do. I want a second contract with the Broncos. I have a lot to prove. I respect my teammates’ decision; I really do. I love all my teammates. But for me personally, I was already in there, and I wanted to continue to work out there.”
Denver’s other starting guard, Graham Glasgow, also plans on reporting at some point. The 2020 free agency addition has a $100K workout bonus tied to his offseason attendance and said he will report when necessary to collect that. Risner and Drew Lock have $75K workout bonuses this year. Von Miller has a $500K workout bonus in the final year of his contract. Several other Broncos are undecided on attending, Klis tweets, and union rep Brandon McManus indicated multiple team calls have taken place since the NFL announced its offseason schedule.
The NFL and NFLPA have not agreed on terms for this year’s offseason. Citing COVID-19 concerns, the latter has pushed for a fully virtual program for a second straight year. While just more than half the league’s teams have released statements indicating all or many of their players will not report, some teams — like the Chiefs, who have 21 players who can collect workout-based incentives — have not. This is set to create an unusual imbalance, and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith has advised players with workout bonuses to report.
No on-field work can take place until May 17, when Phase 2 of the offseason program begins. How teams’ respective attendance figures look will be interesting.

Graham Glasgow Tests Positive For COVID-19; Broncos Cancel Practice
Both the Broncos and Chargers will enter the weekend with a starting offensive lineman on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Graham Glasgow tested positive for the coronavirus and will miss Sunday’s game against the Bolts, Mike Klis of 9News reports.
Vic Fangio canceled the team’s Friday practice. The NFL did not mandate this move. This comes a day after Anthony Lynn nixed the Chargers’ in-person workout. Los Angeles will be without center Ryan Groy on Sunday after his positive COVID-19 test. As of Friday afternoon, the AFC West matchup remains scheduled for Sunday.
The Broncos identified starting right tackle Demar Dotson and reserve center Austin Schlottmann as close Glasgow contacts. Both would be able to suit up Sunday were they to submit negative tests Saturday. Each O-lineman tested negative Friday, per Klis.
Denver offensive line coach Mike Munchak has been away from the team this week due to COVID-19 protocols, per Klis, though the team did not announce if its second-year assistant tested positive. Running backs coach Curtis Modkins tested positive earlier this month, and Klis adds multiple staffers have as well.
The Broncos signed Glasgow to a four-year, $44MM contract this offseason. Glasgow has been an upper-echelon guard starter for a while, establishing a strong free agency market after a solid run in Detroit. Schlottmann would be in line to replace Glasgow at right guard, were he to be cleared to play.
Broncos Sign Graham Glasgow
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Broncos have signed offensive lineman Graham Glasgow to a four-year, $44MM contract, which includes $26MM in guarantees. Glasgow has been a valuable starter on the interior of the Lions offensive line since he was drafted in 2016. Detroit will now have to replace one of their most consistent contributors.
Glasgow has played both guard spots and at center during his tenure in Motown, but primarily lined up at right guard last season (in 788 of his 872 snaps, per Pro Football Focus). The $11MM annual value of Glasgow’s contract would rank just outside the top-five for the right guard position, just behind Trai Turner and tied with Gabe Jackson. According to PFF’s player grades, Glasgow ranked as the 12th best guard out of the 80 players who qualified last season.
Following the news, Mike Klis of 9News added that Glasgow was team president John Elway‘s top offensive line target. Glasgow had been heavily tied to the Jets prior to the start of free agency, but Gang Green will have to look for another option to reinforce their line.
Jets To Ramp Up Graham Glasgow Pursuit
The Jets are expected to “ramp up” their pursuit of Graham Glasgow, according to Connor Hughes of The Athletic (on Twitter). They have little choice at this point – Patriots offensive lineman Joe Thuney was believed to be their top target, but he has been yanked from the open market after the Patriots used the franchise tag on him.
The Lions, meanwhile, are poised to let the interior lineman walk.
“I’m bummed that I’m not able to stay cause I love Michigan and I love the Detroit area,” Glasgow said recently. “But you don’t play football forever, so I think that being able to go somewhere else and make some money is an exciting thing.”
Glasgow spent five years in college at Michigan and then the first four years of his pro career in Detroit, but a relocation is in his future. The Jets, who are desperate to protect Sam Darnold and open up holes for Le’Veon Bell, could be the team to back up a Brinks truck for him.
Glasgow has been a starter for the bulk of his career. A third-round pick in 2016, Glasgow has started at least 15 games in each of the past three campaigns. He’s also versatile, with experience at both center and right guard.
In 2019, Glasgow graded out as one of the better interior protectors in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus.
Lions To Let Graham Glasgow Walk?
It looks like the Lions are going to be making a significant change to their offensive line. Guard Graham Glasgow doesn’t expect to be back in Detroit next season and it appears the team is going to let him walk in free agency, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
“I’m bummed that I’m not able to stay cause I love Michigan and I love the Detroit area,” Glasgow told Birkett. “But you don’t play football forever, so I think that being able to go somewhere else and make some money is an exciting thing,” he added. Birkett notes that he spent five years in college at Michigan and then the first four years of his pro career in Detroit, so he has deep ties to the area. Glasgow said he hadn’t “really heard too much from the Lions,” so it sounds like they didn’t even make an effort to keep him.
The Lions drafted him in the third-round back in 2016, and he became a near-instant starter. He’s been a consistent presence on the offensive line, starting at least 15 games in each of the past three seasons. His versatility will help him on the open market, as he spent 2018 at center before moving to right guard last year.
Glasgow received very strong marks from Pro Football Focus last year, and Birkett writes that the Lions’ “decision to let him walk is largely financially motivated.” Glasgow is going to land a big contract, and Detroit doesn’t want to pay up. Birkett clearly isn’t a fan of the decision, writing that it’s “baffling” and a “head-scratcher” for a team that has had inconsistent offensive line play to let him move on.
He should receive a good amount of interest when the tampering period opens up next week, and we’ve already got word of at least one potential suitor. The Jets are one of a handful of teams to keep an eye on in regard to Glasgow, Sirius XM NFL reporter Adam Caplan tweets. The Jets have already been linked to some other high profile offensive linemen, so their interest certainly isn’t surprising.
Jets Targeting Pass Rushers
The Jets are seeking some pass-rush help, and they’re eyeing some of the top names on the market. Sources tell Connor Hughes of The Athletic that “the Jets are doing their homework on Jadeveon Clowney” and are among the teams “in on him.” The Jets are also planning to “actively pursue” Rams pass rusher Dante Fowler.
The team could alternatively look to the trade market for help. Hughes writes that the Jets are expected to make a call on Ravens defensive end Matt Judon, who is expected to receive the franchise tag after finishing 2019 with a career-high 9.5 sacks. However, Hughes cautions that the organization may be wary to give up too much draft capital, especially when they’re looking to fill holes via the draft.
Hughes also expects the Jets to be in on a number of offensive lineman, including Joe Thuney and Graham Glasgow. We heard yesterday that the organization was planning on pursuing Redskins lineman Trent Williams. The front office could even pursue cornerback James Bradberry, according to the writer.
The Jets will have a whole lot of money to throw at a pass-rusher, as they’re currently sitting with more than $60MM in projected cap space. Hughes notes that the organization could easily move on from the likes of cornerbacks Trumaine Johnson, lineman Brian Winters, and others, which would open up an additional $20MM to $27MM in cap space.
AFC East Notes: Jets, OL, Patriots, Kilgore
Add the Jets to the teams in the James Bradberry market. Cornerback resides among the many needs in New York, and the Jets are “very interested” in the Panthers starter, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports (subscription required). Twenty-two teams have expressed some degree of interest on Bradberry, per Hughes. This includes the Redskins, now run by longtime Panthers coach Ron Rivera. The Giants are interested, but Hughes notes the No. 1 cornerback price tag will likely push them out of the running.
Here is the latest from the AFC East, first moving to other Jets rumors from Indianapolis:
- A high probability exists the Jets will be the rare team to replace its entire starting offensive line. Week 1’s front five — Kelvin Beachum, Kelechi Osemele, Ryan Kalil, Brian Winters and Brandon Shell — are either unlikely to be back or certainties (in Osemele’s case) not to return, and Hughes notes that the Jets are eyeing four new O-line starters. Alex Lewis, a 2019 trade get who took over after Osemele’s injury, is a free agent but could be the player from last year’s front retained. The Jets are eyeing guards Joe Thuney and Graham Glasgow, per Hughes. While the Jets want to come away with a high-end free agent — they are also in on Jack Conklin — GM Joe Douglas will look to the draft to fill much of the O-line needs, Hughes adds. This points to Gang Green being in the market for this atypically stacked tackle class at No. 11.
- Thuney is expected to cost at least $14MM, with Jeff Howe of The Athletic adding his bidding could push a guard-high $15MM. The Patriots have seen Nate Solder and Trent Brown sign O-line-record money the past two offseasons; they are not expected to try to keep Thuney. Even Thuney’s backup could have a big market. Ted Karras, a full-time starter only in 2019, may be set to earn command a near-$10MM-AAV deal, per Howe. That would be a good indication of the recently seller-happy O-line market hitting another level.
- The Jets have also been in the market for edge rushers for years, finishing second in 2018’s Khalil Mack sweepstakes and seeing a player they wanted to turn into an edge defender — Anthony Barr — renege on a deal at the 11th hour. League sources expect Gang Green to target Dante Fowler, Hughes notes. The Rams’ bevy of big contracts will likely limit them from franchise-tagging Fowler. The Jets are also interested in Matt Judon, though the Ravens are likely to tag him. He could be a tag-and-trade option, however.
- Despite their desperation for edge help, the Jets are not expected to be in the Jadeveon Clowney market. An issue with what some Texans sources described as a “cavalier attitude” made Douglas leery of pursuing a Clowney trade last year and has him looking elsewhere for outside linebacker aid, per Hughes. Clowney’s price tag figures to be immense. The Jets hold $49MM-plus in cap space but have many needs.
- Optimism exists Devin McCourty will be back in New England on a third contract, Howe adds. McCourty and the Patriots are expected to meet before week’s end. The standout safety has spent all 10 seasons of his career in New England. With Jason McCourty still under contract, Devin returning to the Pats should not exactly surprise.
- Like the Jets, the Dolphins could have a retooled offensive front. They are looking around for centers to replace Daniel Kilgore, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Kilgore has started 17 games since signing with the Dolphins in 2018. Releasing him in the final year of his contract would save the Dolphins $4MM.
