Chiefs Waive Josh Gordon, Intend To Sign Him To PS

The Chiefs announced that they are waiving wide receiver Josh Gordon. However, they intend to re-sign him to the Practice Squad in the event he isn’t claimed by another team (Twitter link via NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero).

Gordon signed with the Chiefs in September in an attempt to make another NFL comeback. He began on the taxi squad, allowing him time to get comfortable with the team’s playbook, before getting elevated to the 53-man roster for the first time in Week 5.

His time in Kansas City represented the first NFL action he had seen since December 2019. That year concluded with a five-game stint in Seattle, which wasn’t nearly as productive as his 17 games (split across two seasons) with the Patriots before, which saw him post 60 catches for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns. The 30-year-old appeared in 12 regular season games with Kansas City, totalling five catches for 32 yards and a touchdown.

Gordon has played a full season only once – his rookie season in 2012 with the Browns. The following year showed everyone why he had so much potential, as he posted 1,646 receiving yards en route to All-Pro honors. Since then, he has been in and out of the league, bouncing around to four different teams. For now, assuming he isn’t claimed, he will look to provide experienced wide receiver depth for the Chiefs as they prepare to host a fourth consecutive AFC Championship game.

Chiefs Promote Josh Gordon

The Chiefs have promoted Josh Gordon to the 53-man roster, per a club announcement. With that, the wide receiver could debut as soon as this Sunday night against the Bills.

“I‘m just gonna play it by ear and see how he feels,” head coach Andy Reid said earlier this week (via Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star). “Really, it’s more of a comfort thing with the offense. I don’t want to put him in a bad situation out there.”

The early word has been promising. Despite his well-documented troubles and past difficulties with grasping the playbook, Gordon has been clicking with his new club on the practice field.

The Chiefs, as always, have been scoring with ease this year, but Gordon will give opposing defenses another headache to contend with. Even though he’s years removed from his best work, Gordon is one of the most naturally talented receivers of his generation. To this day, his 14-game 2013 campaign sits sixth on the NFL’s receiving yards-per-game list (117.6).

If Gordon plays in Week 5, it’ll mark his first live NFL action since December of 2019.

Chiefs To Play Josh Gordon This Week?

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid says there’s a chance Josh Gordon could play on Sunday night against the Bills (Twitter link via Adam Teicher of ESPN.com). But, before they move to promote Gordon, Reid wants to ensure that the wide receiver is up to speed on the playbook.

Gordon joined the Chiefs’ taxi squad last week, just days after his latest reinstatement. Now, he might be on the verge of playing for the first time since December 2019 when he was with the Seahawks.

The one-time superstar had seven catches for 139 yards across five games for Seattle. Before that, he registered 60 grabs for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns for the Patriots between 2018 and 2019. Gordon played in just 17 games for New England in those seasons. Meanwhile, his last pro football action came in the Fan Controlled Football League, alongside old pal Johnny Manziel.

The Chiefs are now 2-2 after topping the Eagles on Sunday. Clearly, their offense doesn’t need any upgrades — but there’s no such thing as too much firepower.

Chiefs Could Promote Josh Gordon For Week 5

When the Chiefs take on the Bills in their Week 5 showdown next Sunday, they may have Josh Gordon accompanying them. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Gordon, who just signed with Kansas City’s practice squad earlier this week after being reinstated by the league, has looked terrific in his first few days with his new club.

Now 30, Gordon’s career has been marred by a number of suspensions related to substance abuse. To his credit, he has persisted in his efforts to battle his demons and play football at the game’s highest level, and the Chiefs — who are obviously loaded with offensive talent but who do not have a receiver with Gordon’s ever-tantalizing combination of size and speed — are hoping that his latest comeback will stick.

Per Rapoport, Gordon has picked up KC’s offense quickly, and that has allowed him to flash in practice. It does not sound like he has lost much speed, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes said, “He’s a big receiver. Even if he’s covered, he’s not covered. You can kind of throw it up there and he can make plays.”

The Chiefs are 1-2, but their offense has not been the issue. Mahomes is generally playing up to his usual standards, and the club has put up over 30 points per game. Still, more firepower can never hurt, and if Gordon can perform at a level even close to his ceiling, the league’s most exciting offense would become that much more difficult to defend.

Gordon’s last game as a member of the Seahawks came in December 2019. His signing is the definition of a low-risk, high-reward transaction, but Kansas City could start reaping some of those rewards as soon as next week.

Chiefs To Sign Josh Gordon

The Chiefs are set to sign newly reinstated wide receiver Josh Gordon (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com). The former All-Pro will be joining Kansas City’s practice squad, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (via Twitter). The goal is for Gordon to get up to speed before getting elevated to the active roster.

Gordon last played for the Seahawks, where he had seven catches for 139 yards across five games. Before that, he registered 60 grabs for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns for the Patriots between 2018 and 2019. Gordon played in just 17 games for New England between those years — a common theme for Gordon between his off-the-field issues and constant suspensions. Technically speaking, his last pro football action came in the Fan Controlled Football League, alongside ex-teammate Johnny Manziel.

The Chiefs will likely part ways with one of their lower-tier receivers to make room. As of this writing, Gordon gives KC seven WRs in Tyreek HillMecole Hardman, Demarcus Robinson, Byron Pringle, Marcus Kemp, and Daurice Fountain.

Gordon, 30, has not played a full season since his 2012 rookie year. Still, we all remember his superstar potential as a young player — his 14-game 2013 campaign still sits sixth on the NFL’s receiving yards-per-game list (117.6). Before long, the Chiefs will add him to their world-class offense and find out whether he’s still got some juice left.

NFL Reinstates WR Josh Gordon

The NFL is greenlighting another Josh Gordon chance. The league informed the embattled wide receiver he will be reinstated, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter, who adds Gordon is expected to be eligible to play in Week 4 (Twitter link).

Gordon applied for yet another reinstatement in July. He has not played since the 2019 season, when a suspension ended his active-roster run with the Seahawks, and is eight years removed from his All-Pro campaign. But the veteran wideout has persisted, with the NFL’s relaxed drug policy benefiting these repeated comeback efforts.

Now 30, Gordon is certainly not the player he once was. And the ex-Browns standout is one of the most unreliable performers in modern NFL history. He has not played a full season since his 2012 rookie year. Gordon played in the startup Fan Controlled Football league earlier this year, joining ex-teammate Johnny Manziel. While it looked like Gordon’s NFL career was over at that point, he has battled back yet again for reinstatement.

The Seahawks showed considerable patience with Gordon, keeping him on their roster throughout 2020. It looked like a Gordon return would commence for last year’s Seattle squad. The NFL reinstated him in December 2020, paving the way for a late-season Seahawks return. The team activated him in late December, but another substance-abuse setback nixed that path. After the NFL rescinded Gordon’s 2020 reinstatement, the Seahawks released Gordon earlier this year.

Gordon will be eligible to sign with any team, though widespread interest is unlikely. He caught 27 passes for 426 yards and one touchdown in 2019, splitting the year in New England and Seattle. Gordon showed superstar potential as a young player, and his 14-game 2013 season still sits sixth on the NFL’s receiving yards-per-game list (117.6). But he missed most of the 2014 season due to a substance-abuse ban and did not play in 2015 or ’16. The NFL did not reinstate Gordon until December 2017, and although he finished that season with the Browns, he did not make it through the ’18 slate with the Patriots, who waived him midway through the 2019 season. Gordon made it through five games with the Seahawks before his 2019 ban, which included a PED violation.
