Minor NFL Transactions: 2/14/17
Tuesday’s minor moves:
- The Giants have re-signed a pair of exclusive rights free agents – tight end Matt LaCosse and defensive tackle Robert Thomas – via Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com and Ralph Vacchiano of SNY (Twitter link). LaCosse didn’t play at all last season because of a knee injury, while action for Thomas was scarce. The lineman took the field for just 68 defensive snaps in his eight appearances, during which he picked up five tackles and a sack.
- The Steelers have added six free agents on reserve/futures deals – cornerback Devonte Johnson, linebackers Akil Blount and Jason Fanaika, offensive linemen Kyle Friend and Mike Matthews, and running back Trey Williams – per Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Blount is the son of Steelers legend and Hall of Fame cornerback Mel Blount. Matthews’ father is one of Blount’s fellow Canton enshrinees, longtime Oilers/Titans offensive tackle Bruce Matthews.

NFC East Rumors: Cowboys, Bosa, Goff, Eagles
Recently, Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo confessed that he was “disappointed” that he wasn’t chosen to be the team’s head coach this offseason.
“I’m not going to lie to you,” Spagnuolo said. “I was disappointed I wasn’t the guy . . . but I’m not giving up on my dream of being a head coach…But I like [Ben McAdoo] a lot. It was two-fold. It didn’t happen, so it was a disappointment. But it’s always nice to be wanted.”
McAdoo was viewed as the favorite for the Giants’ job once the team parted ways with Tom Coughlin and it didn’t hurt that he came with the endorsement of quarterback Eli Manning. Spagnuolo, a high-respected defensive mind, is likely hoping for another head coaching opportunity down the line.
Here’s more from the NFC East:
- Ohio State pass-rusher Joey Bosa landed in Dallas on Thursday morning for his visit the Cowboys, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Bosa is under consideration for Dallas with the No. 4 overall pick.
- Quarterback Jared Goff is also meeting with the Cowboys today, as Rapoport tweets. Goff may be a less likely candidate for the No. 4 overall pick as many expect Dallas to only entertain QBs in the later rounds. The Cal quarterback has a lot of hype behind him heading into the draft and, recently, one GM theorized that a team could trade up to No. 1 to draft him. As previously reported, Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch is also meeting with Dallas today.
- Temple wide receiver Robby Anderson and center Kyle Friend are working out Thursday at the Eagles‘ local pro day, as Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle tweets.
- Late last week, Washington inked Vernon Davis to a one-year deal. Davis’ deal is officially a one-year, $1.66MM pact, but the 12th-year tight end can earn up to $4.5MM in 2016 through incentives.
