Minor NFL Transactions: 10/28/17
Here are today’s minor moves.
- The Bills will fill Marcell Dareus‘ roster spot with running back Joe Banyard, Mike Rodak of ESPN.com tweets. Banyard will return to Buffalo’s 53-man roster after being released last week. This is the running back/special-teamer’s sixth NFL season.
- The Broncos waived wide receiver Hunter Sharp and promoted linebacker Kevin Snyder from their practice squad, Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post tweets. Denver promoted Sharp last week when it was set to operate without Emmanuel Sanders and Isaiah McKenzie, but McKenzie is set to return and Sanders has a questionable designation. The Broncos signed Snyder to a reserve/futures deal in January, and he’s back despite the team having waived him with an injury designation in September.
- Center Cornelius Edison will rise from the Vikings‘ practice squad to their active roster, per the St. Paul Pioneer Press’ Chris Tomasson (on Twitter). Minnesota will be playing without Jeremiah Sirles on Sunday, and starting guard Nick Easton is questionable after missing last week with a calf injury. Edison played in six games with the Bears last season.
- The Redskins officially placed linebacker Mason Foster on injured reserve and waived running back Mack Brown, the club announced today. The dual transactions will create roster space for Washington’s two newest offensive lineman, Orlando Franklin and Arie Kouandjio.
Redskins Promote RB Mack Brown
The Redskins signed running back Mack Brown to their active roster off of their practice squad, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. The move is another indication that the team will be without Matt Jones on Sunday. To make room, Washington waived safety Josh Evans.
The fumble-prone Jones has been dealing with a knee injury and was held out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday. Now, Jones will be on the sidelines as Chris Thompson and Rob Kelley handle the Redskins’ ground attack. Brown, meanwhile, will back both of them up as Washington takes on the Bengals in London.
Brown missed the Redskins’ 53-man cut in each of the last two years. After being yo-yo’d on and off the practice squad last year, Brown landed there again this year. Now, he might actually get his first taste of real NFL action.
Brown led the NFL with 227 rushing yards in the 2016 preseason.

You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Redskins Cut Jenkins, Paulsen, Down To 53
Cullen Jenkins‘ short tenure in Washington has come to an end. After having signed with the Redskins earlier this week, the veteran defensive end has been cut by the team, according to Mike Jones of The Washington Post (via Twitter). The 35-year-old has been in the league since 2004, and he started 14 games for the Giants in 2015.
Logan Paulsen (also reported by Jones) is another notable cut by the Redskins. The tight end has been on the squad since 2010, although a toe injury kept him off the field last season. Entering 2016, he found himself buried on the tight end depth chart behind Jordan Reed, Niles Paul, and Vernon Davis. The 29-year-old compiled 53 catches, 575 yards, and four touchdowns between the 2012 and 2013 season.
Rookie Matt Ioannidis wasn’t necessarily expected to play a large role on this year’s Redskins team, but most expected the fifth-round pick to make the squad. The defensive end was attempting to switch to defensive tackle, writes Jones, but the rookie “struggled with consistency.” The team ultimately opted for veteran Kedric Golston and undrafted rookie Anthony Lanier. Jones tweets that the defensive lineman should pass through waivers and land back on the Redskins’ practice squad.
The Redskins are now down to the 53-man limit several hours before the deadline. Here is the full list of the players that have been cut:

NFL Practice Squad Updates: 11/19/15
Earlier today, Washington made an attention-grabbing move when they signed ex-Cowboys running back Christine Michael to the taxi squad.
Michael, who turned 25 last Monday, was acquired by the Cowboys from the Seahawks in a trade earlier this year, and had been expected to get an increased workload after Joseph Randle was demoted and then released. However, it was the veteran, Darren McFadden, who ended up taking many of those carries, prompting Dallas to waive Michael and take a flier on Robert Turbin this week. In five games with the Cowboys, Michael ran for just 51 yards on 15 attempts, adding a single reception for two yards.

Washington Signs Christine Michael To PS
3:51pm: As expected, Washington has cut running back Mack Brown from the practice squad to create space for Michael, tweets Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post.
3:40pm: Just two days after he was cut by the Cowboys, running back Christine Michael has caught on with another NFC East team, signing today with Washington, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. According to Rapoport, Michael will be joining the club’s 10-man practice squad, rather than the 53-man roster.
Washington doesn’t currently have an opening on its practice squad, so the team will have to remove a player when it officially announces the addition of Michael — running back Mack Brown looks like a potential candidate to be cut, unless the club wants to carry multiple backs on the taxi squad.
It will probably take an injury for Michael to get a promotion to Washington’s 53-man roster, since Alfred Morris and Matt Jones have been a solid 1-2 punch for the team so far, while Chris Thompson has done good third-down work.
Michael was a second-round pick in 2013 for the Seahawks, back when current Washington general manager Scot McCloughan was still working in Seattle, so McCloughan is familiar with the former Texas A&M back. It’s also worth noting that Washington still has two games left against Michael’s old team in Dallas, so he may be able to provide a bit of intel on the division rivals.
