NFC East Notes: Cowboys, Lawrence, Eagles

Jerry Jones is optimistic the Cowboys will have most of their injured players back in the next couple of weeks. The Cowboys are without starters CeeDee Lamb and Tyler Booker on offense, but neither is on IR. That duo will be set to return soon, while cornerback Caelen Carson is in the IR-return window. Rookie running back Phil Mafah will also be an option to come off IR. Jones expressed more hesitancy during a 105.3 The Fan appearance (via The Athletic’s Jon Machota) regarding DeMarvion Overshown and Cooper Beebe. The longtime owner/GM said he does not expect either to return until after the Cowboys’ Week 10 bye. Though, Jones did inject some optimism here by mentioning he does not expect the linebacker or center to miss much (if any) time beyond that point.

Overshown is recovering from a severe knee injury, which resulted in ACL, MCL and PCL tears. A September report pointed to October as a possible early return window; Jones’ latest offering pours cold water on that. Overshown, who missed his entire 2023 rookie season due to an ACL tear, looks likelier to come back at some point in November. Beebe has missed the past three Cowboys contests with a lateral ankle sprain and fractured foot. A return shortly after Dallas’ Week 10 bye would be in line with the initial recovery timetable provided.

Here is the latest from the NFC East:

  • The Cowboys benched Kaiir Elam in Week 5, doing so after he started the team’s first four games. DaRon Bland had already returned in time for Week 4, complementing Trevon Diggs after the duo had barely played together since Diggs’ September 2023 ACL tear. Elam still played 35 defensive snaps in a rotational role during a blowout win over the Jets, but via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Reddy Steward lined up in the slot alongside Diggs and Bland. Elam has worked as an outside corner but has not shown much improvement from his Bills days. The Cowboys did not pick up the 2022 first-rounder’s fifth-year option in May.
  • Dexter Lawrence has seen some less accomplished defensive tackles pass him over since he signed his Giants extension (four years, $90MM) in May 2023. The Giants gave him an incentive package in July, and The Athletic’s Dan Duggan details those markers. Lawrence can earn $1.5MM in playing time-based incentives, with $500K escalators in place for 51%, 60% and 70% of the Giants’ defensive snaps this season. An additional $1.5MM in performance incentives are present, with those benchmarks including separate $500K bumps for five-, six- and seven-sack seasons. With the same three-tiered setup in place for the performance marks, Lawrence must become a first- or second-team All-Pro — and see the Giants improve on either total yardage, yards per carry or yards per pass from 2024 — to cash in on any of the $500K levels.
  • The Commanders benched Brandon Coleman last month, turning to fourth-year option Chris Paul at left guard. This was part of a multi-guard changeover, with Andrew Wylie replacing ex-Chiefs teammate Nick Allegretti at RG (while Sam Cosmi finishes his ACL rehab). Coleman’s health contributed to the benching, per Kliff Kingsbury, who said (via NBC4Sports’ JP Finlay) nagging injuries partially contributed to the demotion. Coleman, who started 12 games as a rookie, has not played since Week 2.
  • Landon Dickerson made it back from preseason meniscus surgery to play in Week 1, but he will be sidelined for the Eagles‘ Thursday-night matchup against the Giants. Dickerson sustained an ankle injury against the Broncos and has been ruled out for Week 6, with the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane indicating a two-game absence is likely in play for the Pro Bowl guard. Brett Toth replaced Dickerson at LG. Elsewhere on the Eagle injury front, long snapper Charley Hughlett underwent successful core muscle surgery, per his agent. Placed on IR last week, Hughlett is expected to miss multiple months.

Eagles Add LS Cal Adomitis, Place LS Charley Hughlett On IR

The Eagles swapped long snappers today. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the team signed Cal Adomitis. He’ll be replacing Charley Hughlett, who landed on injured reserve.

Adomitis brings 49 games of experience to Philly. The Pittsburgh product spent three seasons with the Bengals, including a rookie campaign where he got into three playoff contests. He was among Cincy’s final cuts at the end of the 2025 preseason.

It’s uncertain what ailment Hughlett is dealing with, although the long snapper has recently dealt with his fair share of injuries. He missed 12 games with the Browns last season, and he was limited during his first training camp with the Eagles. He managed to get into each of Philly’s first four games, but now he’ll be sidelined for at least the next month. One of the most experienced long snappers in the NFL, Hughlett has appeared in 156 career games.

Hughlett wasn’t the only Eagles player to land on IR today. As expected, Ogbo Okoronkwo also landed on the reserve/injured list. The defensive end is feared to have suffered a triceps tear this past weekend that will likely end his season after only four snaps. The veteran made his season debut on Sunday, with the Eagles turning to him while navigating a number of injuries to their pass-rush corps.

Eagles Cut 35 Players, Set 53-Man Roster

Nakobe Dean is out until at least Week 4 as he continues to recover from a torn patellar tendon suffered during Philly’s playoff win over the Packers. The impending free agent is coming off his most productive NFL season. The former third-round pick finished the 2024 campaign having started all 15 of his appearances while compiling 128 tackles and three sacks.

Meanwhile, the Eagles moved on from a pair of notable offseason acquisitions. Kendall Lamm started 15 of his 32 appearances for the Dolphins over the past two years, and he was expected to provide the Eagles with some OT depth. Instead, the 33-year-old will look to continue his career elsewhere. The team also moved on from former second-round WR Terrace Marshall. The LSU product topped out at 490 yards during his three-year stint with the Panthers, and he followed that up with a 41-yard showing with the Raiders in 2024.

Browns Release LS Charley Hughlett

Charley Hughlett‘s run with the Browns has come to an end. The veteran long snapper has been released, per a team announcement.

“This is a bittersweet transaction for our organization because we hate separating from a valued and long-tenured player for our team,” a statement from general manager Andrew Berry reads in part. “However, it also gives us the opportunity to express sincere gratitude and appreciation for all Charley has done for the Browns on and off the field… He’s a special individual who we will welcome home as a Cleveland Brown after his career is complete.”

Hughlett’s entire 10-year career has been spent in Cleveland, and he ranks 15th in franchise history for games played. The former UDFA had not missed a game before the 2024 campaign, but a ribs injury limited him to only five contests this past year. Rex Sunahara took over long snapping duties the rest of the way, and today’s news points to him continuing in that role moving forward.

Two years remained on Hughlett’s contract, but no guaranteed salary was in place. The Browns will generate $1.08MM in cap savings with this release while incurring $346K in dead money charges. This is the second cost-cutting measure of the day for Cleveland; safety Juan Thornhill will be let go via a post-June 1 release.

Hughlett, 34, will now look to find a new opportunity. Teams do not make lucrative investments when signing in-house options or outside free agents at the long snapper position, and with the draft not far away potential suitors could elect to wait to see if a younger player is available during the spring. Failing that, Hughlett could manage to continue his career in 2025.

The Browns have also signed cornerback Anthony Kendall. The 25-year-old made 16 appearances with the Titans in 2023 but he did not see any game action this past campaign, most recently spending time on the Ravens’ practice squad. Kendall will look to compete for a roster spot this summer.

The Browns are set to start working Hurst and Diabate back to the active roster in practice. 17 of Hurst’s 18 starts came in his first three years in the NFL back from 2018-20, but he did line up as a starter in his lone game with the Browns this year prior to being placed on injured reserve.

Carpenter and Smith are set to miss their next six games due to the suspension levied by the NFL. Carpenter’s suspension is likely linked to the December arrest last year that saw him released from Pittsburgh’s practice squad. The purpose for Smith’s suspension isn’t as clear, but he also got arrested in 2022 on drugs and weapons charges.

Browns To Extend LS Charley Hughlett

In his eighth season with the Browns, Charley Hughlett will land a second extension. Cleveland is reupping its long snapper on what his agent (via Twitter) notes is a snapper-record deal.

Hughlett’s four-year extension likely will not come in too much higher than Chargers snapper Josh Harris‘, as teams do not allocate much money to this specialty position. But the Browns will give the 32-year-old snapper $1.95MM guaranteed — an amount that includes a $865K signing bonus — according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter links). The guarantee figure comes in just above Harris’ ($1.92MM).

Harris, who signed with the Bolts this offseason, is making $1.4MM per year. That amount is just north of the league minimum, where the rest of the long-snapping lot resides. Hughlett, who was in the final season of one of the league’s longest-running contracts (a six-year, $6.37MM agreement signed back in February 2017), appears set to check in ahead of Harris.

Joel Bitonio, a second-round 2014 draftee, resides as the Browns’ longest-tenured player; Hughlett is just behind him. The Browns added Hughlett initially in September 2014, signing him to their practice squad, but the former Cowboys UDFA did not debut for the AFC North team until September 2015. He has not missed a game since beginning his Cleveland snapping tenure in Week 1 of the 2015 season. Like Bitonio, Hughlett has played for five head coaches and four GMs.

Hughlett also stopped through New England, Jacksonville and Kansas City but has never played for a team other than the Browns. This contract also comes after Hughlett was called for a controversial false-start penalty, an infraction that moved Cade York‘s game-tying field goal back to 61 yards. The Ravens blocked the kick to secure a Week 7 win.

Browns Re-Sign LS Charley Hughlett

The Browns have locked up long snapper Charley Hughlett for a long, long time. Hughlett has inked a brand new six-year deal with Cleveland, according to agent Brett Tessler (on Twitter). The deal will make him the highest-paid long snapper in the league, the agent adds. Charley Hughlett (vertical)

“I am super excited,” said Hughlett in a press release from the Browns. “I couldn’t be happier to be here. My wife and I are happy to call Cleveland our home. I can’t wait to start getting things turned around.”

Hughlett, 27 in May, bounced around the league a bit before making his NFL debut with the Browns in 2015. Since then, Hughlett has appeared in every regular season game for Cleveland. This year, Hughlett was a pending exclusive rights free agent, but the Browns didn’t want to sign him to the standard one-year addition.

John Denney of the Dolphins was the league’s highest-paid long snapper in the league last year with a $1.215MM cap number. Exact terms of Hughlett’s deal are not yet known.

Minor Moves: Wednesday

As teams prepare for the final weekend of the 2014 regular season, we’ll round up Wednesday’s minor roster moves in this space, with the latest transactions added to the top of the list throughout the day:

  • The Raiders announced a series of roster moves. The team placed tight end Brian Leonhardt on the IR and activated defensive end Shelby Harris to take his place. The Raiders also added kicker/punter Michael Palardy to the practice squad.

Earlier updates:

  • Filling the final open spot on their 53-man roster, the Vikings have signed running back Henry Josey from off of the Jaguars’ practice squad, tweets Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com. Josey, who has spent the entire season on Jacksonville’s practice squad, will replace veteran back Ben Tate, whom the Vikings released yesterday.
  • Long snapper Charley Hughlett has signed a three-year contract with the Browns, according to his agent Brett Tessler (via Twitter). While Tessler indicates that the signing is official, the team has yet to formally announce it, and will need to make a corresponding move to make room for Hughlett. Johnny Manziel could be headed to IR, but the team also reportedly intends to activate defensive lineman John Hughes, so a second move will be required.
