Jaguars To Sign LB Jake Ryan
The Jaguars are signing linebacker Jake Ryan, reports NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo (via Twitter). The deal is pending a physical, and the terms of the deal aren’t yet known.
The former fourth-rounder once looked to be a future cornerstone of the Packers’ defense. Ryan compiled at least 80 tackles in both 2016 and 2017, and Pro Football Focus ranked him No. 19 among linebackers following that latter campaign. In total, the 27-year-old started 27 games during his three healthy seasons with Green Bay.
Unfortunately for Ryan, he tore his ACL during 2018 training camp, forcing him to sit out the entire campaign. While the linebacker was once eyeing a lucrative contract ahead of his walk year, he’ll likely have to settle for a shorter deal with Jacksonville.
Myles Jack and Telvin Smith seem like locks for the Jaguars’ starting lineup, but a healthy Ryan could easily supplant Leon Jacobs. Assuming Ryan continues playing on the outside, he’ll also be competing with Lerentee McCray, Blair Brown, and Christian Kuntz for playing time in Jacksonville.
Jaguars Sign OL Cedric Ogbuehi, WR Chris Conley
The Jaguars are starting to shape their offense around Nick Foles. Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reports (via Twitter) that the team has signed offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi and wideout Chris Conley.
The 26-year-old Ogbuehi was selected in the first round of the 2015 draft by the Bengals, but he only appeared in 35 total games through four years. The Bengals declined his fifth-year option back in May, and the lineman proceeded to appear in only two games in 2018.
The Jaguars do have a major need at offensive tackle. The team currently has Cam Robinson slotted in as one of the starters, and the former second-rounder did take a step forward last season. 2018 fourth-rounder Will Richardson is projected to start on the other side of the line, although he missed his entire rookie campaign with a knee injury.
Conley, 26, is an intriguing addition to the Jacksonville offense. The 26-year-old has battled injuries and inconsistency throughout his career, but he still put together a solid season with the Chiefs in 2018. The wideout finished the season having hauled in 32 receptions for 334 yards and a career-high five touchdowns.
Conley should have a chance to contribute in Jacksonville. The Jags’ current receiver corps consists of Marqise Lee, Dede Westbrook, DJ Chark, and Keelan Cole.

Jaguars To Host OT Cedric Ogbuehi
Cedric Ogbuehi is set to visit with the Jaguars, reports ESPN’s Jordan Schultz (via Twitter). This is the first reported visit for the free agent offensive tackle.
The 26-year-old was selected in the first round of the 2015 draft by the Bengals, but he never emerged as a reliable starter during his tenure in Cincinnati. In four years, Ogbuehi only appeared in 35 total games, although he did start 25 games between 2016 and 2017.
The Bengals declined his fifth-year option back in May, and the lineman proceeded to appear in only two games in 2018. Ogbuehi didn’t suffer any major injuries during the season, and he was a healthy scratch for the majority of the Bengals’ outings.
The Jaguars do have a major need at offensive tackle. The team currently has Cam Robinson slotted in as one of the starters, although the former second-rounder did take a step forward last season. 2018 fourth-rounder Will Richardson is projected to start on the other side of the line, although he missed his entire rookie campaign with a knee injury.
Jaguars Sign TE Geoff Swaim
Geoff Swaim is heading to Florida. The Jaguars have signed the free agent tight end, reports ESPN’s Dan Graziano (via Twitter).
The 2015 seventh-round pick had spent his entire four-year career with Dallas, including a 2018 campaign where he took on a more important role in the Cowboys’ offense. After hauling in nine total receptions through his first three seasons in the NFL, Swaim finished last year with 26 receptions for 242 receiving yards and one touchdown in nine games (nine starts). He broke a bone in his wrist midseason and was placed on the injured reserve in late December.
Swaim had traditionally been touted for his blocking prowess. However, his ability to also contribute in the passing game means he could take on an even bigger role in Jacksonville in 2019. As of right now, the Jags are only rostering two other tight ends in Ben Koyack and Pharoah McKever.

Jaguars To Re-Sign A.J. Cann
The Jaguars will re-sign guard A.J. Cann to a three-year contract worth just more than $15MM, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link).
Jacksonville has attempted to fix its offensive line in each of the past two offseasons, first drafting left tackle Cam Robinson in 2017 before signing left guard Andrew Norwell last year. Despite those changes, the Jaguars still ranked in the bottom half of the NFL in Football Outsiders‘ run- and pass-blocking metrics.
Cann, at the least, will give the Jaguars some level of continuity on the right side of its front five. Jacksonville released right tackle Jermey Parnell earlier this month, so Cann will lining up next to a new starter in 2019. That could potentially be 2018 fourth-round pick Will Richardson, or the Jags could add another option.
High-quality interior offensive line options were not plentiful in this year’s free agent class, and Cann — at age-27 — represents one of the younger choices at the position. He’s been a full-time starter in Jacksonville ever since entering the league as a third-round pick in the 2015 draft, starting 60 games over the past four years. In 2018, Pro Football Focus graded Cann as roughly league-average, ranking him No. 44 among 77 qualified guards.

Jaguars Had No Competition For Foles
Garafolo reports the Jaguars wanted to pay Foles more than they had to, so that he would have the immediate credibility in the locker room of being the unquestioned starter. The Jags thought it would’ve sent the wrong message if they had lowballed Foles and tried to pay him something in the $15MM range, and that it would’ve diminished Foles’ standing. Having Foles being able to step in and manage all the large personalities in their locker room is very important to the team, Garafolo notes.
Nick Foles is going to be a Jaguar. The Super Bowl MVP agreed to terms on a four-year deal with the Jaguars, with a base value of $88MM. While Foles cashed in, he didn’t have much of a choice on where to go. There were “no significant other suitors” for Foles’ services on the open market, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network (Twitter link). In the video posted to his account. Garafolo explains that Jacksonville was essentially bidding against themselves, but didn’t mind overpaying.

Jaguars Release Blake Bortles
After agreeing to sign Nick Foles, the Jaguars have released Blake Bortles, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (via Twitter). Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network first reported several days ago that Bortles would be cut (Twitter link). Pro Football Talk tweets that Bortles will not be designated as a post-June 1 cut, which means the Jags will absorb a $16.5MM cap charge this season. However, short-term pain will give way to long-term gain, as Bortles will be completely off the books by 2020. That season, the Jaguars will also get cap credit (up to $6.5MM) based on the quarterback’s 2019 earnings (via Florio).
The writing appeared to be on the wall for a while now, especially after it was reported earlier this month that the Jags were the favorites to sign Foles.
The third overall pick of the 2014 draft, Bortles never lived up to his draft status. Bortles appeared to be on the ropes several times in Jacksonville, but he managed to battle back each time. After nearly being benched for Chad Henne before the season, he led the Jaguars to a shocking level of success in 2017, and helped them reach the AFC Championship Game. In response, the team awarded him a three-year, $54MM extension.
But Bortles collapsed this past year, and he was eventually benched for Cody Kessler, although he did reclaim the starting job at the very end of the season. In 13 games and 12 starts last year, Bortles threw for 2,718 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He will likely have to settle for a backup role this offseason wherever he lands.
