Patriots To Place LB Shea McClellin On IR

The Patriots are placing linebacker Shea McClellin on injured reserve, according to ESPN.com’s Field Yates. The nature of his injury is currently unknown. Shea McClellin (vertical)

McClellin missed most of the preseason with his mystery ailment. Whatever the issue is, it won’t rule him out for the year as he remains a candidate for one of the team’s IR-DTR spots.

McClellin, a former first-round pick of the Bears, signed a three-year, $9MM deal with the Patriots in 2016. He appeared in 441 snaps for New England last year and made some athletic plays, including his memorable leap over the line of scrimmage to block a field goal against the Ravens in December.

To fill his spot on the roster, the Patriots re-signed running back Brandon Bolden. He had just just one carry last season and spent the bulk of his time on special teams.

Mutual Interest Between Patriots, Boldin

Anquan Boldin retired from football this summer and he swears that he is retired for good. However, there was mutual interest between the wide receiver and the Patriots in the wake of Julian Edelman‘s injury, Ben Volin of The Boston Globe hears. Anquan Boldin

It doesn’t sound like there’s anything brewing between the two sides at the moment, particularly since the Bills continue to hold his rights after placing him on the reserve/retired list. It’s hard to see a scenario in which the Bills cut Boldin loose to sign with a divisional rival, particularly since his retirement left them high and dry after trading Sammy Watkins to Los Angeles.

Boldin turns 37 in October, but he showed last year that he can still be productive. Boldin joining up with the Patriots seems unlikely, but his itch to play is worth keeping in mind as the season goes on.

Patriots Reach 53-Man Max

The Patriots made a massive amount of cuts on Saturday to reach the 53-man limit. Most of the cuts were expected, but there were a few surprises in the bunch.

Released:

Waived:

Karras was widely projected to be the team’s top backup on the interior line, so his release comes as a surprise. The 24-year-old was drafted by the Pats in the sixth round of the 2016 draft and played in all 16 regular season games last year. He also appeared in all three playoff games as a reserve.

O’Shaughnessy, acquired via trade in April, was competing for the third tight end spot. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder has played in 23 NFL games with six starts.

Patriots To Cut RB Brandon Bolden

When the Patriots finally release their initial 53-man roster, Brandon Bolden won’t be on it. The running back has been released, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Brandon Bolden (vertical)

Bolden re-signed with the Patriots in April, but his spot was shaky from the get-go. The Patriots added Rex Burkhead and Mike Gillislee to the fold this year, giving him an uphill climb as he battled with a group including fellow incumbents James White and Dion Lewis.

Bolden had just one carry last season with four targets. He was more of a special teams guy in New England and it seems possible that he could return at some point.

Patriots Acquire DE Cassius Marsh

The Patriots have acquired defensive end Cassius Marsh from the Seahawks, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link).New England is sending a fifth-round pick and the seventh-round pick it acquired from Seattle in exchange for cornerback Justin Coleman back to the Seahawks, per Schefter.

New England has been searching for edge rushing help, and while Marsh isn’t exactly a premier defensive end, he’ll give the Pats depth at the position. Additionally, Marsh plays special teams (nearly 80% of Seattle’s snaps), meaning New England has now acquired two special-teamers today, with the other being former Lion Johnson Bademosi.

All told, the 25-year-old Marsh has appeared in 37 career games and made one start. He’s signed through 2017 at a rate of $690K.

Patriots, Colts Swap QB Jacoby Brissett, WR Phillip Dorsett

The Patriots and Colts have completed an unexpected swap. According to ESPN’s Field Yates (via Twitter), the Patriots are dealing quarterback Jacoby Brissett to Indy for wideout Phillip Dorsett.

Jacoby BrissettThere were whispers that Brissett might not make the Patriots 53-man roster, despite the fact they used a third-round pick on the Florida/North Carolina State product in 2016. The 24-year-old got an opportunity to play during his rookie campaign, starting a pair of games for the depleted Patriots. He ultimately completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 400 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also added 83 rushing yards and one score on 16 attempts.

Brissett’s season ended early after he underwent thumb surgery, and he was subsequently placed on injured reserve. However, the second-year player looked fully recovered this preseason, and he threw for 341 yards and four scores during the team’s finale. While Bill Belichick has carried three quarterbacks in past seasons, he traditionally likes to carry a single backup behind starter Tom Brady. With Jimmy Garoppolo healthy and ready to go, the Patriots clearly wanted to carry an extra player elsewhere.

Now, Brissett could find himself thrust into a starting role with the Colts. With Andrew Luck‘s status up in the air for the team’s season opener, Indianapolis might view Brissett as a better starting option than Scott Tolzien and Stephen Morris.

Dorsett had spent his entire two-year career in Indy after being selected in the first round of the 2015 draft. He didn’t live up to his draft position during his rookie campaign, but the 24-year-old showed signs of improvement during his second year in the league. Dorsett ultimately appeared in 15 games (seven starts) last season, hauling in 33 receptions for 528 yards and two touchdowns.

With Julian Edelman out for the season, Dorsett will provide the Patriots with an experienced replacement. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old’s status with the Colts was up in the air. Roster Resource listed Dorsett as the team’s fourth wideout behind T.Y. HiltonDonte Moncrief, and Chester Rogers. The team is also rostering receivers Kamar AikenJoJo Natson, and Quan Bray.

Patriots To Acquire DB Johnson Bademosi

The Patriots have agreed to acquire defensive back Johnson Bademosi from the Lions, tweets Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Detroit will pick up New England’s 2019 sixth-round pick, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

Badedmosi, 27, started the first three games of his career in 2016, as he’s been mostly a reserve and special teamer through five NFL seasons. In 2016, Bademosi played on roughly a quarter of Detroit’s defensive snaps but saw action on more than half the club’s special teams plays. He’s entering the final season of a two-year deal and will make $1.3MM in base salary in 2017.

The Patriots are typically field one of the league’s best special teams units, so Bademosi will fit in nicely. Last year, New England ranked eighth in special teams DVOA. The Patriots had interest in signing Bademosi before he landed with the Lions last year, tweets Michael Lomardi of the Ringer.
