The 2026 head coaching carousel has now seen 10 jobs open since the start of the offseason, as the Bills have fired Sean McDermott. HC firings generally lead to coordinator changes, and several other teams have proceeded with OC or DC moves to start their offseasons. Here are the current OC and DC searches transpiring. Dolphins To Hire Sean Duggan As DC

Another important hire on Jeff Hafley‘s Dolphins staff is being made. Packers linebackers coach Sean Duggan is heading to Miami to become the team’s new defensive coordinator, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports.

Once the Dolphins brought in Jon-Eric Sullivan as their new general manager, signs increasingly pointed to Hafley following him to South Beach as head coach. As expected, that proved to be the case roughly two weeks ago. Hafley will have a familiar face at the coordinator spot on his first Miami staff.

The Dolphins interviewed Clint Hurtt for the position, but Duggan was recently named as the expected hire in this case. He and Hafley have worked together at the college and pro levels. Duggan worked as a graduate assistant at Ohio State before following Hafley to Boston College. The two continued to work alongside one another for Hafley’s two seasons as the Packers’ defensive coordinator.

Hafely will call plays on defense during his first NFL head coaching stint. The coordinator spot will still of course be an important one, though, and Duggan will take on increased responsibilities with this new title. The 32-year-old was a defensive assistant in Green Bay in 2024 before coaching the team’s linebackers this past season. He will see an expanded purview during his first DC gig at the pro level.

Today’s news comes as little surprise but it confirms incumbent defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver will not be retained for 2026. Weaver spent the past two seasons as Miami’s DC, and he was a popular target for head coaching interviews around the NFL during this year’s hiring cycle. Weaver, 45, was a finalist for the Cardinals’ gig but it went to Mike LaFleur earlier today. Late in the coordinator hiring process, Weaver will now seek out a new opportunity.

Miami ranked 24th in total defense and 22nd in points allowed last season. Improvement across the board will be sought out under Hafley, Duggan and Co. this season with the Dolphins aiming for sustained success under their new regime. Mike McDaniel managed a pair of wild-card appearances during his four-year tenure, but he did not post a playoff win and oversaw a team which regressed over time.

Bobby Slowik had already been promoted to offensive coordinator prior to today’s move. Chris Tabor is also in place as Miami’s new special teams coordinator. With Duggan now in place, many of Hafley’s most important hires have been taken care of.

AFC East Coaching Updates: Duggan, Dolphins, Bills

New Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley has worked quickly to fill out his first NFL coaching staff. We’ve reported several confirmed hires, but one addition hasn’t yet been publicly made official. According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, it’s believed that former Packers linebackers coach Sean Duggan has followed Hafley from Green Bay to Biscayne Bay.

Duggan has been a longtime Hafley disciple. After serving as a linebackers coach at Hawai’i and UMass, Duggan took a graduate assistant position at Ohio State, where Hafley was co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach. When Hafley was named head coach at Boston College, Duggan followed, getting promoted to linebackers coach and, eventually, adding co-defensive coordinator to his title. When Hafley was hired as defensive coordinator in Green Bay, he brought along Duggan, who served a year as a defensive assistant before being named linebackers coach this past season.

Now, while Duggan’s hire in Miami hasn’t been officially announced, the hire of new Dolphins linebackers coach Al Washington has been, per Jackson. Washington was also on staff with Duggan and Hafley at Ohio State back in 2019. He followed up his tenure with the Buckeyes with a four-year stay as Notre Dame’s defensive line coach. With Washington occupying the LB coach position, though, Duggan’s position in Miami becomes a mystery. Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has ventured that Duggan could end up being Hafley’s pick for defensive coordinator. The Dolphins have reportedly only interviewed one candidate for that position, so they may not be able to officially announce Duggan into the job until they’ve satisfied the Rooney Rule.

Here are a few other coaching updates coming out of the AFC East:

  • On the offensive side of the ball in Miami, the Dolphins have also hired Matt Applebaum to serve as assistant offensive line coach, per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. Applebaum was Hafley’s offensive line coach at Boston College for the first two years of Hafley’s four-year tenure. Applebaum then, oddly enough, left the Eagles to accept a job as the Dolphins offensive line coach, his first position coaching role in the NFL. He was let go after only a year at the job, though, and returned to his old position in Chestnut Hill for Hafley’s last year with Boston College, remaining with the team until Hafley called him to Miami. On the other side of the ball, the team also added assistant defensive line coach Chuka Ndulue, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2. Ndulue made the jump to the NFL ranks of coaching last year in the same position for the Chargers. He represents the minority of coaches on staff in Miami who do not have a working history with Hafley prior to this.
  • Lastly, in the AFC East, the Bills are reportedly hiring respected veteran offensive line coach Pat Meyer, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. A former collegiate strength & conditioning coach, Meyer started coaching offensive line in 2008 at Colorado State. He made the jump to the Canadian Football League in 2012 before landing as an assistant offensive line coach with the Bears the following season. After two years in Chicago, he spent another two seasons as an offensive assistant in his first stint with the Bills. That led to his first NFL full-time position coaching job as the Chargers offensive line coach/run game coordinator, a role he performed for three years before a two-year stint as the Panthers OL coach and a four-year stint in Pittsburgh. He returns to Buffalo now to serve as a position coach with the Bills for the first time.

NFC North Notes: Lions, Bears, Pack, Vikes

The Lions are hiring former NFL quarterback Bruce Gradkowski as an offensive assistant, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Originally a Buccaneers sixth-round pick in 2006, Gradkowski bounced between six different teams in his career, finishing with 37 total appearances and 20 starts. He briefly coached at the high school level before joining the XFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks as offensive coordinator in 2022.

The Battlehawks’ passing offense have generally been successful under Gradkowski. Ex-Alabama star A.J. McCarron ranked first in passing yards and second in touchdowns in 2023. After the XFL’s merger with the USFL, former Iowa State receiver Hakeem Butler led the newly formed UFL in receiving yards on his way to Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Given his playing and coaching history, Gradkowski’s role in Detroit will likely focus on their passing offense as the Lions attempt to reload their staff after it was pilfered by other NFL teams during this year’s hiring cycle.

  • The Lions will also be working to retain their pending free agents, including defensive linemen Levi Onwuzurike and Marcus Davenport. The team has discussed returns with both players, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, with Davenport saying after the season that he wanted to stay in Detroit. Onwuzarike has already engaged in discussions about a deal, with Birkett adding the sides talked about a second contract previously. Davenport has missed most of the past two seasons, and his loss hurt a Lions defense that played without Aidan Hutchinson for much the season as well.
  • Lions general manager Brad Holmes is not planning to have the same aggressive approach as his former boss, Rams GM Les Snead. Holmes does not believe the Lions have an expiring Super Bowl window and said that he will “stay committed to the process,” according to Birkett.
  • The Bears made a trio of hires to Ben Johnson’s coaching staff this week. Dan Roushar will be the team’s new offensive line coach after holding the same position at Tulane for the past two seasons, according to the Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs. Former Colts linebackers coach Richard Smith and ex-Jaguars defensive line coach Jeremy Garrett will join the Bears in the same roles, per Biggs and Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.
  • The Packers will promote Sean Duggan to linebackers coach to replace new Jaguars DC Anthony Campanile, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Duggan has spent the last five seasons under Packers DC Jeff Hafley, four at Boston College as linebackers coach and one in Green Bay as a defensive assistant.
  • Vikings wide reciver Jordan Addison pled not guilty to two misdemeanor DUI charges dating back to a July 2024 arrest in Los Angeles, per ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. Addison did not receive any punishment from the NFL for the incident, but could face a fine or suspension after legal proceedings conclude.

Jaguars Hire Anthony Campanile As DC

Liam Coen has landed his new defensive coordinator. The Jaguars are hiring Anthony Campanile to run their defense, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The Jaguars have since announced the move.

“Anthony Campanile represents exactly what we want to be as a defensive unit and football team,” Coen said in a statement (via Bleacher Report’s James Palmer). “He brings an aggressive defensive mindset and a system that is adaptable to our players and allows them to play fast and physical.”

Following a long stint coaching college football (including a one-year look as Boston College’s co-defensive coordinator), Campanile has seen a rapid rise through the NFL ranks. He got his first NFL job with the Dolphins as their linebackers coach in 2020, and he ended up spending four years in that gig. After going empty handed during Miami’s search for a new DC, Campanile left for a promotion in Green Bay in 2024, where he served as the Packers linebackers coach and run game coordinator.

The Packers finished this past season ranked seventh in rushing yards allowed per game (99.35) and third in yards per attempt (4.0). As a result of Green Bay’s impressive showing, Campanile became a relatively popular name on the coordinator circuit. He had an interview with the 49ers earlier this offseason, and Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says Campanile likely would have gotten the 49ers gig if Robert Saleh rejected the job. Silverstein notes that Campanile also had an opportunity to join Penn State as their new defensive coordinator.

Instead, the 42-year-old will be heading to Jacksonville, where he’ll be tasked with guiding a defense that finished last season ranked 31st in yards allowed and 27th in points allowed. Campanile’s extensive work with linebackers should also benefit some of the team’s recent draft picks, including 2022 first-round pick Devin Lloyd.

Coen made it clear that he wasn’t going to retain Ryan Nielsen on his new staff. The Jaguars launched a DC search that includes the likes of Panthers defensive pass game coordinator Jonathan Cooley, former Raiders DC Patrick Graham, Vikings defensive pass game coordinator Daronte Jones, and Rams defensive pass game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant. Ultimately, Campanile won out.

With Campanile now in Jacksonville, the Packers will need to find a new coach for their linebackers. Matt Schneidman of The Athletic points to Sean Duggan as a natural replacement. Duggan most recently served as a defensive assistant in Green Bay’s linebackers room, but he previously coached the position under current Packers DC Jeff Hafley when the two were at Boston College.
