The 2026 head coaching carousel has now seen 10 jobs open since the start of the offseason, as the Bills have fired Sean McDermott. HC firings generally lead to coordinator changes, and several other teams have proceeded with OC or DC moves to start their offseasons. Here are the current OC and DC searches transpiring. Bills To Rehire Bobby April III, John Egorugwu; Team Adds Drew Terrell To Staff

Two former Bills defensive coaches are returning under new DC Jim Leonhard. The team is rehiring Bobby April III and John Egorugwu, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter. They will coach the Bills’ outside and inside linebackers, respectively.

Buffalo is also making two new hires, with Schefter adding the team is bringing in Drew Terrell as its wide receivers coach and adding former Oklahoma defensive coordinator Jay Valai as its cornerbacks coach. Terrell interviewed for the Chargers, Commanders and Falcons’ OC jobs last month.

April is coming to Buffalo after three years as Stanford’s defensive coordinator. More notably with regards to this Bills hire, April worked with Leonhard at Wisconsin from 2018-22. April served as the Badgers’ OLBs coach during that span, which featured Leonhard as the Big Ten program’s DC and interim HC. Before heading to Madison, however, April was linebackers coach under Rex Ryan in Buffalo from 2015-16. April is the son of former NFL ST coordinator Bobby April Jr.

While April’s Bills stint occurred before Brandon Beane‘s arrival, the current GM was on staff when Egorugwu was in place previously. The Bills hired Egorugwu from the Ravens in 2017. Egorugwu, who completed a notable jump in being a 2015 Ravens hire weeks after he had pledged to work at then-Division I-FCS Missouri State, was on Sean McDermott‘s staff from 2017-20. The final three years featured him as assistant LBs coach. Egorugwu spent the past four seasons as the Giants’ linebackers coach under Brian Daboll, having reunited with ex-Bills coworkers Daboll and Joe Schoen after a season at Vanderbilt.

Terrell spent the past three seasons as the Cardinals’ pass-game coordinator under Drew Petzing. Terrell had spent the previous three seasons as wideouts coach in Washington under Ron Rivera. Valai spent the past four seasons as Oklahoma’s co-DC, having previously coached at Texas and Alabama. He worked under Bob Sutton as a quality control assistant with the Chiefs in 2018. While Valai was a former Wisconsin DB, his tenure did not overlap with Leonhard’s time as a player or a coach with the program.

Falcons Interview Drew Terrell For OC Job

Drew Terrell‘s coordinator candidacy is starting to heat up. We learned yesterday that the Cardinals passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach interviewed for the Chargers OC job, and now NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Terrell also interviewed for the Falcons job.

Following his four-year collegiate career at Stanford (where he was recruited by Jim Harbaugh), Terrell kicked off his coaching career with a job at Virginia Tech. He quickly moved on to Michigan’s staff under his former college coach before taking his first NFL coaching gig with the Panthers in 2018.

Terrell joined the Commanders franchise in 2020 and quickly earned a promotion to WRs coach, where he guided the likes of Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel. He lost out on the Cardinals OC job in 2023 but still ended up joining their staff as the passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach. While Terrell struggled to get the most out of Marvin Harrison during his time in Arizona, he has played a key role in the development of Michael Wilson and (to a lesser extent) Trey McBride.

Terrell has turned into a relatively popular name during this year’s hiring cycle, as he’s scheduled interviews with the Commanders and Chargers. Now, he’ll have an opportunity to join Kevin Stefanski‘s new staff in Atlanta. While Tommy Rees is the favorite for the Falcons OC job, Terrell represents the team’s first official interview for the position.

Chargers Interview Drew Terrell For OC

The Chargers continue their search for a new offensive coordinator, and they’re now turning to an unexpected spot to potentially fill the role. The team announced this evening that they completed an interview with Cardinals passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach Drew Terrell.

The former Stanford wideout started his NFL coaching career with the Panthers in 2018. He made a name for himself during his three-year stint in Washington, where he served as a receivers coach. During his time with the organization, he oversaw Terry McLaurin‘s development into a Pro Bowl-caliber wideout, and he was also at the helm for one of Curtis Samuel‘s most productive campaigns.

He lost out on the Cardinals offensive coordinator job in 2023 but ended up still joining the organization as their passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. While Marvin Harrison hasn’t truly broken out under the coach’s tutelage, Terrell did squeeze out an unexpected 1,000-yard campaign from Michael Wilson in 2025. Of course, Trey McBride has also emerged as one of the league’s premier pass-catching TEs while Terrell has served as the passing game coordinator.

While Terrell would appear to be a somewhat random addition to the Chargers’ OC search, he does have some connection to Jim Harbaugh. Terrell worked under the coach while working as a graduate assistant on Michigan’s staff.

Greg Roman was canned as the Chargers offensive coordinator following a low-score outing in the team’s playoff loss to the Patriots. Harbaugh has generally been targeting veteran coaches for the role, with the likes of Mike McDaniel, Brian Daboll, Arthur Smith, Marcus Brady, Shane Day, and Brian Callahan interviewing for the gig.

Commanders Promote David Blough To OC

David Blough began this past season as Washington’s assistant quarterbacks coach. Following the team’s surprising decision to dismiss Kliff Kingsbury, Blough will make a significant career jump.

The Commanders are promoting the recently retired QB to offensive coordinator, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports. A report earlier Friday (via ESPN.com’s John Keim) indicated Washington did not want to lose Blough, but Detroit had shown OC interest. This represents a remarkable rise for a 30-year-old staffer whose playing career did not wrap until 2024.

Washington blocked Blough from interviewing to become the Jets’ QBs coach last year, keeping him as assistant QBs coach under Tavita Pritchard. Blough climbed to the QBs coach spot once Pritchard took the Stanford HC job in December. The Lions showing interest in bringing Blough back — as their OC — meant the Commanders needed to act, and Rapoport adds Detroit’s interest was real here. That explains the quick Washington promotion.

A backup for five NFL seasons, the former UDFA played under Ben Johnson and learned under Kingsbury. The Commanders hired Blough to Dan Quinn‘s staff in 2024. While fellow recently retired backup/30-year-old Davis Webb has drawn HC interest, Blough has beaten him to the coordinator level. Considering how successful the Commanders were with Kingsbury in 2024 — with Jayden Daniels healthy — this is still a borderline shocking development. Daniels had endorsed Kingsbury after the season, but his most recent position coach will instead be calling plays in 2026.

The Commanders interviewed Cardinals pass-game coordinator Drew Terrell for the OC job today, per Rapoport. The team also interviewed Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells on Thursday. Blough joined other internal staffers in being considered for the job, per NBC4 Sports’ JP Finlay. Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic identified tight ends coach David Raih and passing game coordinator/assistant head coach Brian Johnson as the two other internal candidates. This is a relatively quick hire, but Blough clearly impressed and/or was a threat to leave. Considering Johnson’s 2024 decision to spurn the Commanders to stay with the Lions, this could also represent a bit of payback from the NFC East team.

Quinn’s Falcons past also may have factored into this Blough call. Matt and Mike LaFleur followed Kyle Shanahan to San Francisco in 2017, and The Exhibit’s Josina Anderson indicates Quinn did not want to make a similar mistake with Blough. The Bears also showed interest in Blough during last year’s cycle, but the Commanders prioritized him.

This franchise has a recent history of going very young at OC. Blough does not top Sean McVay, who landed the job at 27 in 2014, but he is much lighter on coaching experience. Blough’s lack of coaching background makes this one of the most interesting OC hires in many years. After all, Blough was still playing in 2023. He spent the full season on the Lions’ practice squad. It seems clear Blough picked up a lot from future Washington HC candidate Johnson that year, but Blough also learned under the eventual Bears HC during Lions training camp in 2022.

A Browns UDFA in 2019, Blough made his way to Detroit that year via trade. Blough made five starts for the Lions in 2019, as a Matthew Stafford back injury sidelined the longtime starter, and stayed with the team through training camp in 2022. Blough received his walking papers before the ’22 season, as the Lions acquired Nate Sudfeld before Dan Campbell‘s second year. Blough ended up in Minnesota on Kevin O’Connell‘s practice squad.

While that was also assuredly an important learning experience in Blough’s development, the Cardinals poached him off the Vikings’ P-squad that December and gave him two starts following Kyler Murray‘s ACL tear. Blough lost both games to finish his career 0-7 and did not win a game as a pro starter, but the Purdue alum has made a fascinating climb up the coaching ladder. In taking over for Kingsbury in calling plays for a Daniels-led offense, it would certainly not shock to see Blough on a near-future HC carousel.

For now, the Commanders will hope they are right on another wunderkind OC. The team still needs to hire a defensive coordinator to replace Joe Whitt, but three days after the Kingsbury dismissal, Quinn’s most important assistant position is filled. How Blough fares will go a long way toward determining if Quinn can stick around in Washington long term.

Cardinals Finalize Gannon’s New Staff

The Cardinals announced today that they have finalized their coaching staff under new head coach Jonathan Gannon, according to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. We’ve tracked many new hires, firings, and retainings as they’ve occurred, but today’s finalization fills in any holes that remained between last year’s staff and what we’ve reported on so far.

On the offensive side of the ball, we’ve got the confirmations and official titles for two new hires. Drew Terrell, who was expected to leave Washington and rumored to be in the running for Arizona’s pass-game coordinator role after missing out on the offensive coordinator job, has officially been hired as the Cardinals’ passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. Additionally, Israel Woolfork, who was rumored to become the new quarterbacks coach after being informed by the Browns that he was granted leave from his diversity coaching fellow position, has officially been made the quarterbacks coach in Arizona.

Two other new hires were announced today on the offensive staff. Former Charleston Southern head coach Autry Denson has joined the staff as a running backs coach. Denson has extensive experience coaching the position at the college level for Notre Dame, Miami (OH), and Bethune-Cookman, but this will be his first job in the NFL. Also joining the staff, Chris Cook will be under offensive line coach Klayton Adams as the team’s assistant offensive line coach. Additionally, two members of the offensive staff from former head coach Kliff Kingsbury‘s tenure have been retained with slightly new titles. Formerly the co-pass game coordinator, Spencer Whipple will be retained in the role of pass game specialist. Similarly, former Bill Bidwill Fellowship and quarterbacks assistant Connor Senger has been retained in the position of offensive quality control coach.

On the defensive side of the ball, Patrick Toney and William Peagler, who were announced to be joining the Cardinals’ staff after working together at the University of Florida, had their titles officially announced today. Toney, who was originally expected to be the safeties coach, will be the Cardinals’ defensive backs coach. Peagler, after coaching tight ends in Gainesville, will serve as assistant defensive line coach. Additionally, a holdover from last year, former defensive assistant Ronald Booker has been retained to serve as defensive quality control.

On special teams, after the departure of assistant special teams coach Devin Fitzsimmons to Carolina, Sam Sewell will be filling the same role in 2023 for the Cardinals. Additionally, away from either side of the ball, the Cardinals hired two more new staffers and retained two others. Brandon Schwab has been hired as assistant to the head coach, and Shea Thompson has been hired as director of football performance. Coaching assistant Jay Razzano was retained from last year’s staff, and Kenny Bell, who served last season in Arizona as chief of staff and offensive assistant, will be retained as the team’s director of football strategy.

With the coaching staff finalized, Gannon and the Cardinals can turn their attention to the NFL Combine, the draft, and the rest of the offseason.

NFC Coaching Updates: Commanders, Vikings, Giants

Confirming early rumors from this week that Stanford quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard could be finding his way onto Eric Bieniemy‘s new offensive staff in Washington, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler has reported that the Commanders are working toward an agreement to likely make Pritchard the team’s new quarterbacks coach. The quarterbacks coaching position is currently occupied by last year’s position coach, Ken Zampese, but Fowler speculates that Zampese may stay on with the Commanders in a different role.

On the other hand, the team is parting ways with senior offensive assistant Jim Hostler, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post. Hostler has been in Washington for the past three years and has an extensive history as a position coach in the NFL for several franchises, even serving as offensive coordinator for the 49ers back in 2007. Also expected to leave is wide receivers coach Drew Terrell. Terrell was a candidate for the Cardinals offensive coordinator position that was awarded to Drew Petzing, but after missing out, is still a strong candidate in Arizona for the role of pass-game coordinator.

Here are a few other coaching updates from around the NFC:

  • The Vikings announced three staff updates today, according to Vikings staff writer Craig Peters. Minnesota hired two defensive staffers with past ties to new defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Mike Siravo was hired as the team’s new inside linebackers coach. Siravo worked as a graduate assistant at Boston College when Flores was there as a linebacker. Since then, Siravo has been a longtime follower of former Panthers head coach Matt Rhule, working with him at Temple, Baylor, and Carolina. He most recently held the position of defensive run game coordinator and linebackers coach for the Panthers. Lance Bennett has been hired as a defensive quality control coach for the Vikings. Bennett previously worked under Flores in Miami as an assistant to the head coach. Lastly, on the offensive side of the ball, Grant Udinski has been promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach. Udinski spent last season in the role of assistant to the head coach/special projects.
  • The Giants are expected to make an addition to their coaching staff, according to Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer. Former Panthers assistant head coach on offense Jeff Nixon is expected to be hired in the role of running backs coach in New York. If true, Nixon would be taking the role over from DeAndre Smith, who departed for the same position in Indianapolis today. Nixon likely hopes the Giants will find a way to bring back star running back Saquon Barkley, who is set to hit free agency this offseason.

Coaching Updates: Eagles, Cards, Broncos

Following an impressive 2022 campaign that led to a Super Bowl appearance, the Eagles have watched their coaching staff be picked apart as both former coordinators have accepted positions as head coaches elsewhere. It looks like two of the assistants that they’ve held onto so far may be leading candidates to replace their former coordinators, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

Breer claims that it’s looking more and more like quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson will be staying in Philadelphia. The lauded assistant recently turned down an opportunity to join Frank Reich‘s new staff in Carolina, which Breer believes sets him up to succeed Shane Steichen as the Eagles’ next offensive coordinator.

Similarly, Philadelphia may be looking internally to replace Jonathan Gannon, as well. Originally, the team considered Vic Fangio and Jerod Mayo as top candidates, but with Fangio taking the coordinator job in Miami and Mayo looking more and more like Bill Belichick‘s protege in New England, they were forced to keep looking. Breer posits that passing-game coordinator Dennard Wilson should be considered a top candidate for the defensive coordinator job in Philadelphia.

Here are a few other updates to coaching staffs currently in flux amidst regime changes:

  • The Cardinals have started piecing their coaching staff together under Gannon. The team has hired Klayton Adams to serve as their offensive line coach, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Adams has history coaching multiple offensive positions in the college ranks and last served as the tight ends coach for the Colts after two years as the assistant offensive line coach. He had recently accepted the offensive line coaching position at Stanford but will spurn the Cardinal to coach for the Cardinals. Assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers is reportedly being retained by Gannon, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. No word on if Rodgers will retain both titles or solely serve as special teams coordinator. Lastly, the Cardinals had interviewed Commanders wide receivers coach Drew Terrell for their offensive coordinator position before hiring Drew Petzing to the position, but the team reportedly may still hire Terrell in a different role. According to Jeremy Folwer of ESPN, Terrell is considered a strong candidate to be hired as the pass-game coordinator in Arizona.
  • Yet another former Saints staffer will be joining Sean Payton in Denver. According to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, Dan Dalrymple will be joining the Broncos‘ staff. Cardinals Request OC Interviews With Drew Petzing, Drew Terrell, Joel Thomas

With Jonathan Gannon in place as the new head coach in Arizona, changes are coming on the defensive side of the ball. As for their offense, several candidates will be considered before a hire is made.

The Cardinals put out three interview requests for the offensive coordinator position on Thursday. In a trio of tweets, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero report that Arizona is seeking a meeting with Browns quarterbacks coach Drew Petzing, Commanders wide receivers coach Drew Terrell and Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas.

As Rapoport notes, Petzing is a strong contender to land the position. The 35-year-old worked alongside Gannon during their shared time in Minnesota, and was named as a logical hire in the event Gannon was given the head coaching position in Arizona. Petzing has spent the past three years in Cleveland, coaching the team’s tight ends before taking charge of the QBs room in 2022.

Terrell, 31, spent four years in the college ranks before making the jump to the NFL. He worked with the Panthers for two years, then went to Washington in 2020. After one season as an assistant WRs coach, the Stanford alum was promoted to the full-time position and has held it for the past two years. Rapoport adds that Terrell is highly regarded around the league despite his relative lack of experience, so it comes as little surprise that he is receiving interest for a coordinator position.

Thomas held a number of hats at the NCAA level, but has consistently worked with running backs throughout his career. He worked as an OC at Idaho in 2004 and 2005, serving in a similar capacity at Washington in 2012. His only NFL posting has been in New Orleans, beginning in 2015. The 48-year-old has been a key positional coach helping drive the success the Saints have enjoyed with Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram in the backfield during his tenure, though, like the other two coaches, he has not received interview requests from any other team so far.

Much has been made about the importance regarding Gannon’s hire at OC, given his own background as a defensive staffer and his status as a rookie head coach. During his introductory press conference, he spoke about his commitment – regardless of whomever is tapped as offensive coordinator – to keeping the unit centered around Kyler Murray.

“I have a very specific vision of how I want to play on offense and the person that comes in here to run the offense is going to understand that everything that we do will be structured around the quarterback position to maximize his skill set,” Gannon said, via ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss. “And we have an elite one.”

Gannon added that he expects to start the interview process to begin in the next few days, so a decision will likely not come long after as he works to build his staff.
