Chargers Cut Trevor Williams

The Chargers released former starting cornerback Trevor Williams from injured reserve, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). It appears that Williams is healthy, or close to being healthy, because Schefter hears there’s a good chance that he’ll get claimed by another team.

Williams was looking to bounce back from an injury-riddled 2018 campaign, but he landed on IR once again in September with a quad injury. After missing seven games with a knee malady, Williams has yet to see the field in 2019.

A UDFA out of Penn State, Williams started 15 Chargers games in 2017. It sounds like he’ll have more games, and possibly more starts, on the horizon in 2019.

Chargers Place WR Dontrelle Inman On IR

The injuries continue to pile up for the Chargers. Los Angeles is placing veteran receiver Dontrelle Inman on injured reserve, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic (Twitter link).

Inman started his career with the Chargers, and he had some real success in San Diego. In 2016 he had a breakout year, 58 passes for 810 yards and four touchdowns. He was traded to the Bears the following year, and things quickly went downhill for him. He had 334 yards in eight games with Chicago, and 304 yards in nine games with the Colts last year. He signed with the Patriots earlier this offseason, but then requested and was granted his release back in August.

Not long after, he was swooped up by the Chargers. Inman started Los Angeles’ game against the Dolphins this past week due to an injury to Mike Williams and he was very productive, racking up 76 yards on five catches. Unfortunately he also picked up a quad injury that will now sideline him for at least the next eight weeks. As Popper points out, the Chargers’ once promising receiving corp now only has three healthy options in Keenan Allen, Geremy Davis and Andre Patton.

Chargers In On Jalen Ramsey?

  • Peter King of Football Morning in America writes that the Chargers might get into the Jalen Ramsey sweepstakes. The writer believes adding a top defensive player would be a savvy move as the organization prepares for a new stadium in 2020. King adds that he “still think[s]” that the Chiefs and Ravens are also involved in talks with the Jaguars. We heard earlier this week that the Jaguars rejected a trade that would have netted them a pair of late first-rounders.

Chargers Sign K Chase McLaughlin

With Michael Badgley still ailing, the Chargers have added another kicker. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports (via Twitter) that Los Angeles has signed rookie Chase McLaughlin.

Badgley has missed his team’s first four games as he recovers from a groin injury. As Pelissero notes, the 24-year-old recently suffered a setback that will keep him on the shelf for several more weeks. Punter Ty Long has filled in for the first month of the season, and he’s been solid through four games; the 26-year-old has converted seven of his nine field goal attempts and all nine of his extra point tries.

Long was caught limping during Sunday’s win over the Dolphins. The Chargers presumably don’t want to suffer another special teams injury, and with Badgley out longer than expected, the front office finally decided to add a kicker.

In comes McLaughlin, an undrafted rookie out of Illinois. The former walk-on ended up having a standout college career, earning a Bakken-Anderson Big Ten Kicker of the Year award and a First-Team All-Big Ten nod. He was waived by the Bills at the end of the preseason before catching on with the Vikings practice squad. He was cut by Minnesota in mid-September, and he’s had a single workout (with the Colts) since that time. The 23-year-old will presumably make his NFL debut against the Broncos this weekend.
