Washington Places Terrelle Pryor on IR
Washington wide receiver Terrelle Pryor underwent arthroscopic surgery on his injured ankle on Monday and was placed on injured reserve, head coach Jay Gruden told reporters including the Associated Press.
The move comes after Pryor was declared inactive for Washington Week 11 matchup with New Orleans. The receiver saw foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte on Monday and the decision was made to operate on the ankle that has been bother Pryor since Week 2, according to ESPN. “[Dr. Anderson] said the stuff he saw in there, he couldn’t believe I was still playing,” Pryor told reporters.
Washington was hoping for a big season out of Pryor, who the team signed to a one-year deal after topping 1,000 yards on 77 receptions in a breakout season with Cleveland. Those hopes didn’t come to fruition, as the former quarterback finished the season with just 20 receptions for 240 yards and one touchdown.
The injury was sustained following a nasty — but legal — hit by Rams safety Cody Davis. The defender hit Pryor around his knees and led to the receiver calling out the safety following the game.
Redskins' Terrelle Pryor Has Surgery
- Redskins wide receiver Terrelle Pryor is getting arthroscopic surgery on his ankle, a source tells Mike Jones of the Washington Post (on Twitter). Doctors should have a better idea of his recovery timetable after he goes under the knife. Pryor, a big free agent signing, has yet to really shine in Washington. To date, he has 20 catches for 240 yards with one touchdown in nine games.
Redskins’ Chris Thompson Done For Season
Redskins running back Chris Thompson suffered a fractured fibula and will miss the remainder of the 2017 campaign, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link).
Thompson, 27, had been in the midst of a breakout campaign in his fifth NFL season. Heading into Week 11, Thompson had posted 771 yards from scrimmage, a total that had already topped his previous career high. He’d averaged 4.6 yards per carry on the ground, but was even more effective in the passing game, where’d he posted 38 receptions for 494 yards. All told, Thompson had managed five total touchdowns.
A former fifth-round pick, Thompson agreed to a contract extension earlier this year. The new pact will keep Thompson in Washington through the 2019 season, and will pay him $7MM+ over the next two years. Next season, Thompson will earn nearly $2MM in base salary and count for roughly $3.25MM on the Redskins’ cap.
Thompson will become the second Redskins’ running back to be placed on injured reserve in recent weeks, joining former starter Rob Kelley. Head coach Jay Gruden & Co. will now continue to lean on fourth-round rookie Samaje Perine, who handled 23 carries in today’s loss to the Saints. Byron Marshall, signed off the Eagles’ practice squad last week, will also contribute, while Washington could also promote rookie LeShun Daniels from its practice squad.
Terrelle Pryor Seeing Specialist
- Both Terrelle Pryor and Jordan Reed will miss the Redskins‘ Week 11 against the Saints, and Pryor’s ankle injury looks like one that could shelve him for multiple weeks. Pryor will see Dr. James Andrews about his ankle, Master Tefatsion of the Washington Post reports (on Twitter). Signed to a one-year contract, Pryor has been demoted from Washington’s first unit and now hopes he can return this season — one that’s doubled as a grim contract year. Center Spencer Long will also miss Washington’s game in New Orleans.

Redskins Place LB Will Compton On IR
The Redskins have placed linebacker Will Compton on injured reserve, the club announced. Washington has since replaced Compton on its 53-man roster by signing fellow linebacker Zach Vigil.
Compton is now the second Redskins inside ‘backer to land on IR in the past month (joining Mason Foster), meaning Zach Brown will once again need another partner on the second level of Washington’s defense. In addition to Brown and Vigil, the Redskins have two other inside linebackers on their roster: seventh-round rookie Josh Harvey-Clemons and third-year pro Martrell Spaight, the latter of whom appears poised to take over starting duties. Spaight, 24, has played 159 defensive snaps this season while Harvey-Clemons has only seen time on special teams.
The 28-year-old Compton wasn’t a star, but he had compiled 32 starts with the Redskins since 2014, so he clearly was familiar with the club’s defensive system. In 2017, Compton had started three contests and played on roughly a quarter of Washington’s defensive snaps, managing 17 tackles, one interception, and three passes defensed in the process. However, Pro Football Focus had assigned Compton below-average marks against both the run and pass.
Compton, a Nebraska product, signed a one-year restricted free agent tender this spring, meaning he’s earning $1.797MM for the 2017 campaign. He’ll become a free agent in 2018, meaning he’ll hit the open market coming off an injury-affected season.
