Dolphins Waive P Ryan Stonehouse, Sign CB Cameron Dantzler
Ryan Stonehouse has proven to possess one of the strongest legs in NFL history, going 3-for-3 in seasons with 50-plus-yard punting averages. The player who broke Sammy Baugh‘s longstanding single-season punting record has now been jettisoned twice this year, however.
The Dolphins waived Stonehouse on Tuesday, per a team announcement. Initially reporting the Dolphins’ decision to cut the strong-legged specialist, the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson notes the team will go with incumbent Jake Bailey for a third season. This release also came despite the Dolphins hiring ex-Titans special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman this offseason.

This decision comes months after the Titans declined to tender Stonehouse as an RFA. The original-round tender price spiked to $3.26MM this year, leading to more nontender calls than usual, and a punter being nontendered at this rate was not exactly shocking. Still, Stonehouse had made it back from ACL and MCL tears sustained during the 2023 season. He posted his third 50-plus-yard punting average as well.
As a rookie, Stonehouse brought down Baugh’s hallowed single-season punting mark (51.4 yards per boot) — one that had stood 1940 — by averaging 53.1 yards a kick. Baugh also set that record on 35 punts; Stonehouse punted 90 times as a rookie. He then matched that punting average a year later, though the ACL and MCL tears sustained on a blocked punt ended his 2023 season after 12 games. In 17 contests last season, Stonehouse averaged 50.6 yards per punt.
While the three-season sample size would seemingly hold some weight, the Dolphins saw Bailey average 56 yards (on three preseason punts) to Stonehouse’s 43.3 during the team’s first two preseason games. Bailey averaged 45.7 and 47.1 yards per punt in 2023 and ’24, respectively. The Stonehouse cut will tag the Dolphins with just $75K in dead money. Bailey is tied to a two-year, $4.2MM deal; it would have cost $550K to drop him. Stonehouse should generate some interest before the season.
Announcing their Matt Judon signing, the Dolphins also added cornerback Cameron Dantzler and waived wide receiver Tarik Black. The Dolphins also placed offensive lineman Yodny Cajuste on IR, per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson.
A former third-round pick who started 26 games with the Vikings from 2020-23, Danzler has become an NFL nomad. The Dolphins are the veteran corner’s sixth NFL team; he stopped through Washington, Buffalo, Houston and New Orleans. Dantzler did not play in the NFL last season but saw time in the UFL — with the San Antonio Brahmas and Memphis Showboats — during that league’s past two seasons. Miami is amid a full-scale cornerback makeover and already lost Artie Burns and Kader Kohou to season-ending injuries, leading to this flier on Dantzler.

Ojemudia is returning to the NFL after playing for the UFL’s DC Defenders in the spring, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. After starting 11 games for the Broncos as a rookie in 2020, he struggled with injuries and hasn’t played in the regular season since 2022.. The 27-year-old will add depth to a Cowboys cornerback room that isn’t expecting Trevon Diggs or Shavon Revel back until September. Second-year corner Caelen Carson is also dealing with a knee injury, so Ojemudia could get some snaps in Dallas’ last preseason game on Friday. A 53-man roster spot is unlikely given how late he signed with the team, but a strong first week could keep him in contention for the practice squad.
Winfree, a five-year veteran, will land with his fourth NFL team after a workout in Houston. The Texans also worked out former Chiefs wideout Cornell Powell, according to KRPC2’s Aaron Wilson.
Freeland, a 2023 fourth-round pick, started nine games as a rookie and spent 2024 as the Colts’ swing tackle. He will be out for the season with a fractured leg, per Colts.com writer JJ Stankevitz, as will Phillips (bicep), who hasn’t played in the regular season since 2022. Wohler sustained a Lisfranc injury, according to Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. The seventh-round safety will miss his rookie year after appearing to carve out a role in the Colts defense with an impressive preseason.
Dolphins Place OL Germain Ifedi On IR
Earlier this month, the Dolphins signed Germain Ifedi as depth along the offensive line. His time working with Miami has come to a quick end, however.

Ifedi was placed on injured reserve Thursday, per a team announcement. As a result, he is set to miss the 2025 campaign in its entirety unless a release by means of an injury settlement takes place. The 31-year-old’s absence will leave the Dolphins short on options at the tackle spots as well as, potentially, depth at guard. Head coach Mike McDaniel said (via David Furones of the Sun Sentinel) Ifedi suffered a triceps tear.
A veteran of 90 starts and 117 appearances, Ifedi’s most recent action came with the Browns. The former first-rounder handled work on the blindside while filling in along Cleveland’s injury-plagued offensive line. His recent Miami signing came in the wake of Austin Jackson enduring a setback in his rehab process and facing a multi-week absence as a result. Jackson is expected to be healthy in time for Week 1, something which would be key for Miami up front.
In a corresponding move, the Dolphins signed Yodny Cajuste. That comes as little surprise, as Cajuste was among the group of veteran O-linemen who worked out for Miami prior to the Ifedi signing. A third-round pick of the Giants in 2021, Cajuste’s 17 regular season appearances to date have come with the Patriots. The 29-year-old could add to that total soon if he manages to survive roster cuts at the end of the month.
Entering Thursday, the Dolphins had just over $11.5MM in cap space. Signing Cajuste will lower that figure slightly, but his pact will no doubt be worth the veteran minimum. His arrival will offer depth up front as the team looks to sort out its pecking order along the offensive line. Ifedi, meanwhile, will turn his attention to recovery in anticipation of the 2026 campaign.
Dolphins Sign OL Germain Ifedi
The Dolphins have signed veteran offensive lineman Germain Ifedi, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Starting right tackle Austin Jackson is expected to miss a few weeks of camp after suffering an injury in practice on Saturday, so Ifedi will at least provide experienced depth in Jackson’s absence (though the team does believe Jackson will be in the Week 1 starting lineup).
Ifedi, 31, has 117 apperances and 90 starts to his name. While most of that time has come at right tackle, he has also seen his fair share of snaps at right guard. In 2024, he started seven games at left tackle for the Browns’ injury-depleted offensive line.
That was the most action he saw since his seven-start 2021 campaign with the Bears, and there is a reason why he was still on the open market in early August. The former first-round pick of the Seahawks played every snap for Seattle during his first four years in the league from 2016-19, but he never developed as the team hoped, and his fifth-year option was declined as a result.
That led him to Chicago, where he spent the 2020-21 seasons. He operated as a full-time starter during that stint, excepting the games he missed due to injury. His Pro Football Focus evaluations were much better as a Bear than they had been as a Seahawk, but they were still roughly average, and he was unable to carve out a meaningful role for himself with the Falcons in 2022. He then spent all of the 2023 slate riding the Bills’ bench and did not see a single snap.
His time as an emergency LT with Cleveland did not go well, with PFF considering him the seventh-worst tackle in the league out of 81 qualified players. In fairness, he was miscast as a blindside blocker, and his work with the Bears suggested he can be a competent starter and a solid pass-blocker on the right side of the line. It may or may not be enough to land him a spot on the 53-man roster, but the Dolphins could certainly have done worse in their search for camp reinforcements.
That search also included players like Zack Bailey, Yodny Cajuste, Chris Hubbard, and David Sharpe, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, who indicated that quartet worked out for the team along with Ifedi. Obviously, Ifedi impressed the most.
In a corresponding move, Miami waived fourth-string quarterback Brett Gabbert (via ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques). And, in a rare piece of good news for the club’s secondary, the ‘Fins activated free agent addition Ifeatu Melifonwu from the active/NFI list (via Louis-Jacques). Melifonwu could start at safety alongside trade acquisition Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Smith sustained a torn patellar tendon during a Bengals joint practice with the Bears, ESPN.com’s Jeremy Fowler reports. He joins Evans in sustaining a season-ending injury during that workout. A 2021 fourth-round pick, Smith was believed to have earned the Bengals’ swing tackle role early last year. But he did not see any game action in Year 3. Having played in just three career games, Smith has seen his career hit a crossroads after this injury. His rookie contract expires after the season. This further depletes a Bengals O-line that will be without first-rounder Amarius Mims for a bit due to a strained pec.
A former Bengals starter, Adeniji joined the Browns in March. A knee injury sidelined Adeniji recently, and while Kevin Stefanski said the veteran O-lineman will miss “a little bit of time,” this transaction will likely lead to an injury settlement that sends him back to free agency for a stretch. The Bengals used Adeniji as a starter in each of their four 2021 playoff games, before spending to upgrade their O-line the following year. Adeniji, a 2020 sixth-rounder, played in one Vikings game last season.
Brown and Lamar Jackson sustained injuries during the Panthers’ most recent preseason game, adding to Carolina’s issues — headlined by Dane Jackson‘s significant hamstring setback — at corner. Formerly a Cowboys regular, Brown has struggled to stick with a team as of late. He spent 2023 with three teams — the Steelers, 49ers and Jets — and played in just two games. This came after Brown was with Dallas for six seasons, starting 69 games.
A five-game starter for the 2021 Super Bowl champion Rams, Hollins played for three teams last season. The former Broncos draftee was with the Packers, Giants and Chargers. He has 10.5 career sacks, one coming last season.

Several teams whose season is set to come to an end tomorrow have elected to move injured players to injured reserve in order to create roster spots for practice squad options, particularly those who have had their three gameday elevations exhausted. In the case of the Broncos, McGlinchey will see his debut campaign in the Mile High City come to a premature end. Signed to a five-year, $87.5MM deal, the 28-year-old was part of a revamped O-line which did not produce the desired rebound on offense. Manning his usual right tackle spot, McGlinchey was charged with eight sacks and 49 pressures allowed by PFF, resulting in an overall grade of 67.5.
While the Giants will have an interesting decision to make with respect to Xavier McKinney‘s future, they will have Pinnock on the books for at least one more season. The latter’s rookie contract is set to expire following the 2024 campaign, one in which he will no doubt remain a vital member of New York’s secondary. Pinnock has recorded 85 tackles, two interceptions (including a 102-yard pick-six), six pass deflections and a pair of forced fumbles while logging over 1,000 defensive snaps this season. A return to health and a continuation of his 2023 level of play will be sorely needed next fall.

Anthony Firkser will provide the Lions with some veteran tight end depth. Darrell Daniels has mostly transitioned to a fullback role and James Mitchell is sidelined with a hamstring injury, leaving Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright as the two healthy TEs on the roster. Firkser has seen time in 69 regular season games, hauling in 115 catches for 1,207 yards and five touchdowns. The 28-year-old tight end got into 11 games for the Falcons in 2022, finishing with nine catches for 100 yards.
Yodny Cajuste is back in New York after getting cut by the Jets back in August. The former third-round pick got into 17 games (five starts) for the Patriots between the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He was waived by New England back in May before catching on with the Jets for the preseason.
Injury Updates: Cajuste, Armstead, Johnson
Here are some updates on recent injury situations from around the league:
- After agreeing to an injury settlement yesterday with the Jets, former Patriots offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste is expected to be back to form fairly soon. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the former third-round pick is expected to be back to 100 percent in just two weeks. The West Virginia alum disappointed in New England, only starting five games in his first two injury-plagued seasons. With New York struggling with their depth at tackle, getting Cajuste to full health soon could be big.
- After only recently returning to the field at the turn of the month, Dolphins offensive tackle Terron Armstead received a scare as he was carted off the field yesterday with an apparent lower leg issue. Luckily, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network informed us that Armstead will not require any surgery for the injury and will continue working to be ready to play in Week 1 of the regular season, a goal confirmed by Armstead himself (Twitter).
- We’ve all seen the viral clips of two teams getting into it at joint practices. There were fights picked recently between the Panthers and Patriots, the Jets and Buccaneers, and the Ravens and Commanders. The last team on that list saw an injury result from the added aggression that tends to come in these unregulated practice environments. Reportedly, Washington cornerback Danny Johnson sustained a shoulder injury when Ravens tight end Mark Andrews allegedly “slammed him to the ground,” per Mike Florio of NBC Sports. Whether the play was overly aggressive or not, it resulted in an injured rotator cuff for Johnson.

Players placed on injured reserve during training camp or the preseason can’t be activated during the 2023 campaign. However, if they’re released from IR (often via an injury settlement), they’re free to sign and play elsewhere. For instance, Anthony Averett will surely be a player who can catch on with a new squad. The cornerback has seen time in 51 games (27 starts), collecting 114 tackles, three interceptions, and 23 passes defended. He had a career season in 2021 with the Ravens, starting all 14 of his appearances while chipping in 54 tackles, 11 passes defended, and three picks. He spent the 2022 season with the Raiders, starting six of his seven appearances while dealing with a pair of IR stints. He caught on with the 49ers earlier this month.
Among today’s signings, Davion Taylor is an intriguing addition to the Bears linebackers room. The former third-round pick spent the first two seasons of his career with the Eagles, including a 2021 campaign where he started six of his nine appearances while compiling 41 tackles and a pair of forced fumbles. A knee injury ended that breakout campaign early, and he spent most of the 2022 season on the Eagles’ practice squad.
