Extra Points: QBs, Pats, Falcons, Jets, Chiefs
In his latest Agent’s Take column for CBSSports.com, Joel Corry examines a list of eleven quarterbacks who could be playing for new teams in 2017, with names like Tony Romo, Colin Kaepernick, and Jay Cutler topping the list. Kirk Cousins, currently playing under the franchise tag, could also be suiting up for a different club next season, especially if Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan — who once called plays in Washington — becomes a head coach this offseason.
Here’s more from around the NFL:
- The Patriots worked out linebacker Reshard Cliett today, according to Doug Kyed of NESN (Twitter link). As Mike Reiss of ESPN.com writes, New England’s recent run of auditioning linebackers is due to the club’s injury situation. Jamie Collins missed Sunday’s game against the Bengals, his backup Elandon Roberts is dealing with an injury of his own, and Jonathan Freeny is already on injured reserve. Shea McClellin and Rob Ninkovich, each of whom has been playing on the line, could be options at linebacker, as could recent trade acquisition Barkevious Mingo.
- The Falcons tried out defensive tackle Jordan Hill, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times tweets. The Seahawks cut Hill, 25, from injured reserve last week. Hill was a key reserve during the 2014 campaign, posting 5.5 sacks, and was a part-time player (10 appearances) last season as well.
- The Jets worked out wide receiver Dres Anderson today, reports Brian Costello of the New York Post (Twitter link). Anderson, who was recently cut from the 49ers’ practice squad, tried out for the Patriots yesterdayy.
- Defensive end Sterling Bailey, defensive back Daniel Davie, and defensive back Brandon McGee worked out for the Chiefs, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweets.
Lions Place Brandon Pettigrew On PUP
The Lions have whittled their roster down to the league-mandated 75 players, as they’ve placed tight end Brandon Pettigrew and wide receiver Corey Fuller on the PUP list. Additionally, Detroit announced that it has waived cornerback Brandon McGee.

Pettigrew and Fuller will now be sidelined for the first six weeks of the season as they deal with their respective injuries. The Lions will then have an additional three-week window during which they can choose to activate the two pass-catchers. Pettigrew’s absence is especially concerning, given that fellow tight end Eric Ebron is recovering from an injury of his own, while Andrew Quarless is suspended for the first two games of the year.
McGee, meanwhile, was a fifth-round pick of the Rams back in 2013. He’s bounced around the league since that time, as he’s also played for the Giants and Cowboys before signing with the Lions earlier this year.

Today’s minor moves:
- The Lions waived cornerback Keith Lewis and signed fellow corner Brandon McGee, as Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press tweets.
- The Jaguars signed running back Cameron Marshall and waived quarterback Max Wittek, reports Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union (Twitter link).
- The Cowboys are signing offensive lineman Dan Buchholz, a UDFA out of Duquesne, according to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). Dallas also announced that they’ve waived/injured guard Jared Smith.
- The 49ers announced that they have waived/injured safety Jered Bell and signed wide receiver Ryan Whalen. Whalen should give SF some additional depth at wide receiver in the wake of recent injuries.
- The Texans waived/injured defensive lineman Alex Carrington, who was signed only a week ago, tweets Wilson.
- The Packers reached an injury settlement with tackle Josh James, according to Wilson (Twitter link).
- The Dolphins removed defensive lineman Farrington Huguenin from injured reserve with an injury settlement, per Wilson (Twitter link).
Minor NFL Transactions: 7/12/16
We’ll keep track of the day’s latest minor moves here:
- The Packers have signed former Maryland running back Brandon Ross, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. Ross went undrafted out of Maryland earlier this year, but signed with the Vikings in early May — he was cut after spending only three weeks on the roster. In his season senior season with the Terrapins, Ross rushed 150 times for nearly 1,000 yards, scoring 10 times. Per Demovsky, Ross will compete with Don Jackson and Brandon Burks — both fellow UDFAs — as well as John Crockett for Green Bay’s third running back job. The Packers weren’t forced to waive another player to fit Ross onto the roster because the club only had 88 players on their 90-man squad prior to today.
- Roughly three weeks after he reverted to injured reserve after being waived, cornerback Brandon McGee has been cut from the Cowboys‘ IR with an injury settlement, reports Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). McGee, a fifth-round pick of the Rams on 2013, has also spent time with the Giants during his three-year NFL career.

Today’s minor moves:
- Cornerbacks Isaiah Frey and Dax Swanson signed with the Cowboys, as Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. Both players tried out for Dallas last week and apparently made a good impression.
- The Bills have signed offensive lineman Chris Martin to a one-year contract, according to agent Brett Tessler (Twitter link). Martin, 26, has been a member of seven NFL teams and spent time on the Bills’ practice squad last season.
- After being waived by the Cowboys, cornerback Terrance Mitchell will latch on with the other NFL club in Texas, as the Texans have claimed him off waivers, reports Mark Berman of FOX26 (Twitter link).
- The Lions waived wide receiver Austin Willis and signed defensive back Keith Lewis today, as Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press tweets.
- The Chargers cut safety Matt Daniels from injured reserve, per Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). the two sides presumably reached an injury settlement.
- The Chiefs have signed former Akron defensive back Bryce Cheek (Akron) while the Rams have inked former San Diego State long snapper Jeff Overbaugh (San Diego State), Howard Balzer of USA Today Sports tweets.
- Tight end Michael Williams (Patriots), cornerback Brandon McGee (Cowboys), and receiver Corey Washington (Lions) all reverted to injured reserve after clearing waivers, according to Balzer (Twitter link).

Today’s minor moves:
- The Lions have waived wide receiver Corey Washington with an injury designation, reports ESPN’s Michael Rothstein. Washington, who caught five passes with the Giants in 2014, spent last season on the Lions’ practice squad.
- The Patriots have waived/injured tight end Michael Williams, according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com (Twitter link). Williams, who suffered a torn ACL on Wednesday, will revert to IR if he clears waivers.
- The Chiefs (Twitter link) announced that they have signed defensive back Bryce Cheek and waived safety Peni Vea.
- The Cowboys announced that they have waived cornerback Terrance Mitchell, who had one of their two interceptions by cornerbacks last season. The move is slightly surprising because Jason Garrett spoke highly of Mitchell earlier in the offseason, ESPN.com’s Todd Archer observes (Twitter link).
- The Cowboys also waived cornerback Brandon McGee with an injury designation.
NFL Reserve/Futures Contracts: 1/4/16
Now that the 2015 regular season is in the books, teams can begin signing players to reserve/futures contracts, adding those players to their 90-man offseason rosters. Generally, these players finished the season on a team’s practice squad, though some were free agents at season’s end.
