Indianapolis Colts News & Rumors

Colts To Sign Sean Spence

The Colts and free agent linebacker Sean Spence have agreed to a one-year, $3MM deal, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports (via Twitter). Spence was not a full-time starter for the division-rival Titans last year, but he did play on nearly 50% of the club’s snaps, managing 50 tackles and three sacks. Indianapolis hopes he can help bolster a unit that ranked 32nd in DVOA against the run in 2016 and placed 31st in DVOA against opposing tight ends.

Spence becomes the latest in a string of free agent additions to the Colts’ linebacker corps, as new GM Chris Ballard has also acquired Jabaal Sheard, Barkevious Mingo, and John Simon. Of course, Sheard, Mingo, and Simon will likely play on the outside, while Spence will roam the middle of the field. The team recently brought Spence in for a visit, along with fellow linebackers Kevin Minter and Jon Bostic, but Minter ultimately signed with the Bengals. Bostic, meanwhile, remains unsigned.

The club opened its offseason by releasing 33-year-old D’Qwell Jackson as it attempts to rejuvenate its defense. Spence is by no means a high-impact acquisition, but he can be a useful player when utilized properly. He ranked as the as the No. 8 LB on PFR’s most recent edition of the top remaining defensive free agents.

Spence, 26, was selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2012 draft, but the former Miami Hurricane saw his first two NFL seasons wiped out by knee problems. While those health issues contributed to Spence never developing into the sort of player the Steelers may have initially hoped he’d become, Spence did appear in 31 games over his last two seasons in Pittsburgh, starting 13.

Colts, Seahawks Meeting With Kamar Aiken

Free agent wide receiver Kamar Aiken is visiting the Colts today, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). If he doesn’t sign right away, Aiken will then travel to Seattle to meet with the Seahawks on Monday. Kamar Aiken (vertical)

Aiken, 28 in May, had only 29 receptions for the Ravens in 2016 after putting up 75 catches the year prior. Still, we had Aiken ranked as one of the 15 best available receivers heading into free agency, slotting him ahead of notables like Victor Cruz, Brian Quick, Brandon LaFell, Anquan Boldin, Ted Ginn, and Vincent Jackson. When we update the offensive positional rankings later today, Aiken will be at or near the top of the WR list.

We haven’t heard a lot about Aiken in the last week or so, but it sounds like his market is starting to pick up. Baltimore may or may not be looking to bring him back, but we do know that the team has been looking to fortify its wide receiver group. The Ravens thought they were close to a deal with Torrey Smith until he chose the Eagles instead.

The Colts wouldn’t give Aiken a clear path to playing time with T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, and Phillip Dorsett already on the roster. The Seahawks, meanwhile, have Doug Baldwin, Tyler Lockett, Paul Richardson, and Jermaine Kearse in their top four spots. Seattle could give Aiken a better opportunity to occupy a WR3 role.

Colts Re-Sign Darius Butler

The Colts have re-signed free agent safety Darius Butler to a one-year deal, the club announced today. The pact is worth $3MM, and could increase to $4.5MM via incentives, tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.Darius Butler (vertical)

Butler was PFR’s top remaining safety still on the board, and though he’s played cornerback in the past, Butler will in fact convert to safety full-time, Schefter confirms. The 30-year-old Butler had reiterated his desire to shift to the back end at the outset of free agency, and he’ll get his wish even though the Colts released a cornerback — Patrick Robinson — earlier this week.

Indianapolis has managed to retain Butler even though a report last week indicated the two parties had reached a contract impasse. While Butler wasn’t one of the first safeties to sign a new contract during the free agent period, other clubs had expressed interest. Before re-signing with the Colts, Butler took visits with both the Bears and Redskins.

Butler, a former second-round pick, had played cornerback for most of his career before transitioning to safety in the middle of last season. Pro Football Focus still graded Butler among corners in 2016, and he finished as the league’s No. 20 CB. In 12 appearances (seven starts), Butler put up 33 tackles, three interceptions, and seven passes defensed.

Heading into the offseason, Butler ranked as PFR’s No. 48 overall free agent.

Redskins Host DB Darius Butler On Visit

The Redskins are hosting Colts free agent defensive back Darius Butler on a visit today, John Keim of ESPN.com tweets. After Tony Jefferson, Duron Harmon, and Barry Church came off the board early in free agency, Butler stands as PFR’s top ranked unsigned safety. Darius Butler (vertical)

The beauty of Butler is that he can be plugged into multiple spots in the secondary. Keim writes that Butler would provide additional depth for the Redskins, but he could be holding out for a starting role (and salary to match). Butler has said that he hopes to transition to safety full-time in 2017.

Butler apparently reached a contract impasse with the incumbent Colts, but a return is still on the table. Butler, 31 on Saturday, also met with the Bears last week. His market has been a little slow to develop, but things could get rolling for him in the coming days.

Bears, Colts To Meet With John Jenkins

Seahawks free agent defensive lineman John Jenkins is visiting the Bears on Thursday, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). If he doesn’t immediately sign in Chicago, he’ll visit the Colts on Friday. John Jenkins (vertical)

Jenkins, a true nose tackle, would be a logical fit for both the Bears and Colts as they run a 3-4 scheme. Right now, the Bears have three nose tackles under contract, all of whom were drafted by the team: Eddie Goldman, Will Sutton, and Ego Ferguson.

The Colts picked up defensive tackle Al Woods on Thursday morning, but he is more of a three-technique player than a straight-up nose tackle like Jenkins. In the last week, the Colts have already imported three free agent defensive linemen in Woods, Jabaal Sheard, and Margus Hunt.

We have Jenkins ranked as one of the 15 best free agent interior defenders left in free agency.

Colts Sign DT Al Woods

Al Woods is going from the Titans to a division rival. The Colts are signing the defensive tackle, according to his agents at SportsTrust (on Twitter). It’s a two-year contract worth $5MM in total, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.Al Woods

Woods was released by the Titans earlier this month before a $1.25MM portion of his base salary would have become fully guaranteed. By dumping Woods, the Titans saved a little over $2MM against the cap versus $1.5MM in dead money. Now, they’ll have to face him multiple times in 2017.

Woods was a part-time starter for the Titans in his three years there. Before that, he spent time with the Bucs, Seahawks, and Steelers. Last year, he was limited to just 245 snaps thanks to a calf injury. This year, if he stays healthy, he should see considerably more playing time for the Colts in a similar role to what Zach Kerr filled in 2016. Kerr was not tendered an offer and left to sign with Denver earlier this week. He appeared in nearly a third of Indy’s defensive snaps.

Zach Brown In Contact With Colts

The Colts have already visited with Kevin Minter, Sean Spence, and Jon Bostic in their ongoing hunt for an inside linebacker, and the club is widening its search even further. Indianapolis has had talks with free agent linebacker Zach Brown about a contract, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.Zach Brown (vertical)

Brown now ranks as PFR’s top free agent linebacker after Dont’a Hightower signed a new deal with the Patriots. The 27-year-old Brown is listed ahead of notables such as Minter, Perry Riley, Gerald Hodges, and DeAndre Levy, and on a macro level, is one of the better free agents still on the board, regardless of position.

A former second-round pick, Brown started all 16 games for the first time in his career in 2016. Finally living up to his draft billing, Brown racked up 149 tackles, four sacks, and one interception, all while playing extremely well in coverage. He’s also scheduled to visit the Raiders, who are looking to bolster its linebacking unit.

Colts Eyeing Free Agent Linebackers

The Colts have interest in adding a free agent linebacker, and have hosted Kevin Minter (previously reported), Sean Spence, and Jon Bostic on visits, reports Field Yates of ESPN.com (Twitter link)."<strong

Indianapolis ranked 32nd in DVOA against the run in 2016, and placed 31st in DVOA against opposing tight ends, meaning the club needs to add defenders who are able to cover the middle of the field. The Colts began their offseason by releasing inside linebacker D’Qwell Jackson, who at age-33 has lost some of his luster. New general manager Chris Ballard then brought edge rushers Jabaal Sheard and John Simon, but Indy still needs inside ‘backers to complement Edwin Jackson and Antonio Morrison.

Minter, 26, is the best of the free agent linebacker trio hosted by the Colts, and ranks as the No. 2 LB on PFR’s most recent edition of the top remaining free agents. After starting all 16 games in each of the past two seasons, Minter has created a healthy market for himself, and has already met with the Bengals. The former second-round posted 81 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 2016, grading as the league’s No. 25 linebacker, per Pro Football Focus.

Spence, meanwhile, wasn’t a full-time starter for the Titans last year, but did play on nearly 50% of the club’s snaps, managing 50 tackles and three sacks. He’s No. 8 on PFR’s ranking of free agent linebackers. Bostic, 25, missed the entirety of the 2016 campaign with injury, and probably wouldn’t be counted on for anything besides special teams duty with the Colts.

Gosder Cherilus To Retire

Offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus is planning to retire, reports Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Cherilus is an unrestricted free agent, but he won’t participate in the free agent process, per Fowler.Gosder Cherilus (Vertical)

Cherilus, 32, began his career as a first-round pick of the Lions in 2008. The Boston College alum was a full-time starter that season, as he would be for the next eight campaigns. After his rookie contract expired, Cherilus signed a five-year, $35MM contract with the Colts that made him the highest-paid right tackle in the NFL.

After two years in Indianapolis, Cherilus was released, his tenure with the Colts not nearly as successful as his run with Detroit. Cherilus quickly landed with the Buccaneers, and started 13 games in 2015 before becoming a reserve this past season. In 2016, Cherilus only played on about 20% of Tampa Bay’s offensive snaps.

All told, Cherilus appeared in 131 games over his nine-year NFL career. Ultimately, he lived up to his draft billing, as he’s currently the 20th-most valuable member of the 2008 draft by approximate value. PFR wishes Cherilus nothing but the best as he enters retirement.

Colts Could Still Re-Sign Darius Butler
